TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Shogun is crushing it. It feels like it gets better with every week.
I've only watched the first episode, but I've been looking forward to Ripley for years (since it was announced.) I love the books and I like most faithful-ish adaptations. I wouldn't say that Andrew Scott is my Ripley, but he isn't so bad... we'll see where we're taken.
I can't think of a better way for Curb to wrap up. This season has been excellent anyway, but the finale was perfect.
I agree re Shogun. Great television and great representation of the book
Thanks for the recommendation, it'll be on my playlist tomorrow for the train to work.
Fallout in 2 days (4/11). I am hype.
Edit: ONE DAY EARLY WHAT

I'm watching it right now! What do you think?
Only been through two episodes so far, but loving it! I would absolutely be binge watching if some unrelated circumstances were different. Hoping to get through most of it over the next few days!!
Without spoilers, there's tons of nods to various objects and beings in the game. And that goes beyond surface level references - a few slightly obscure things too!
My wife has been reading the recaps from The Vulture after each episode. Here's the link to the episode 1 recap (with spoilers for only episode 1). Those recaps really dig into some of the details.
I'm on the second episode right now too, the refrences so far have been incredible. I really love the stimpack refrence specificially, that was hilarious. Hopefully the rest of it holds up, but I'm super excited to get through it all. 40 minute episodes are great too.
I'm on episode 6 currently. They nailed the aesthetic, even if some shots feel a bit crammed and smaller than they should and there's more green than in your average Fallout game. But that's nitpicking and only worth mentioning as to say it's not perfect.
The story on the other hand... Kinda boring? I think it's the pacing and jumping from character to character since there's legitimate mystery I'm into but... The show is dragging its feet by mixing and matching the main characters and giving them these little episode long adventures. Maybe that's just me.
Trying to keep these little reviews vague and spoiler free but maybe mild spoilers depending on your tolerance (like my tolerance is so low that I consider trailers to be a spoiler, for example - we're all different that way!).
The Gentlemen - 6/10
This show began really strong, and seeing as I quite like the movie I felt quite positive going into it. It didn't stick the landing for me though and parts of it felt a bit contrived. Entertaining throughout though.
SAS Rogue Heroes - 6/10
This was a fun little show but ultimately just not all that good. It had some promising moments but it was kind of lackluster overall. Also, the beards are probably the worst wig of any kind I've ever seen, in anything, ever, lol. Still a decent watch though.
Tokyo Vice - 7/10
I rewatched season 1 before continuing my binge of season 2, and season 1 was still super strong the second time around. Probably 8.5/10. Season 2 is more like a 6/10 though, with a lot of misses and some of those genuinely dumb moments that you wouldn't have expected from otherwise very intelligent characters. The general vibe and feel of the show still works really well though. Will definitely rerewatch if there's gonna be a third season.
3 Body Problem - 8/10
I watched the entire thing in one day, practically one sitting. There are parts of it that don't quite work for me, all the scenes at the beach didn't really land for example. But this is overall a super refreshing show, and having not read the book, the premise is interesting and really well done, would recommend to anyone that likes SF&F!
Have you watched Giri/Haji? I enjoyed that noirish series set in Japan and the United Kingdom
I have! Been a long time though but I must have thought it was pretty good - I rated it as a 7/10
6/10 for SAS Rogue Heroes is generous! I really wanted to like it, but it felt like they completely missed the feeling/tone/aesthetic they were going for. Its like they wanted to be a slightly less goofy Catch-22, but it didn't stick.
I mean it was definitely rather forgettable but yeah I think Catch-22 is what I compared it to when rating it - gave that one 7/10, same with Masters of the Air (forgot to include it in my comment I guess).
It's getting a second season but I'm honestly not sure I'll bother with it
oh man! Is Masters of the Air worth the watch? It was being pitched as the third in the The Pacific, Band of Brothers spiritual trilogy... but I couldn't get into it.
Its a shame that something with so much potential falls so flat and gets renewed when truly great series get the axe.
I mean, if you couldn't get into it, then you couldn't get into it, and that's ok.
It is definitely nowhere near as good as Band of Brothers, which is a 10/10 for me which is extremely rare.. Honestly can't comment on The Pacific as it's too long since I watched it to really compare, but I gave it 7/10 back then apparently.
Masters of the Air was definitely worth the watch I thought! There are some truly well made scenes and likable characters. At the same time though, it's quite messy towards the last third of the show, and there are some really cheesy scenes - not sure how much Spielberg actually had to do with the show but those scenes are basically typical of him (and as you can probably tell, I'm not really a fan of his campiness)
welp, ok -- I'll give it another shot once the new shows slow down. There's too much stuff out right now and its overwhelming. :)
I accidentally picked a show for the wife and I to watch last week. If you haven't seen it, Wolf Like Me is a great comedy based in Adelaide, Australia.
Without giving too much away, the voice of Olaf, Josh Gad, is the lead character and he's great.
I just finished Fallout and... It was as close to a perfect show as anybody can expect it to be, in terms of it as an adaptation, and the plot they developed. I can't start to say anything about it because I could easily geek out and spoil a bunch, but it was extremely impressive. On the rare occasion I figured something out a beat ahead of the show they did it better than I could've imagined it to be. Part of it is the appeal to a Fallout fan, but I sincerely hope this show can see a huge audience, it deserves it.
I'm getting caught up on Doctor Who and just wrapped up Capaldi's first season. He's been pretty great so far with his characterization. I also really like Michelle Gomez as Missy (but really in anything I've seen her in, which isn't much).
You are in for a treat when you get to Heaven Sent.
I adore Missy
I'm a bigger fan of Capaldi with his next companion though. I think that season is nearly perfect.
I would likely interrogate a person to death knowing they watched the Fallout show and never played the games or been aware of its existence. I could see someone who enjoys The Boys liking it.
Otherwise, it's right up there with TLOU in terms of vibe match. There's enough fun, new stuff for the game fans, not that the attention to detail isn't fun on its own. Several laugh-out-loud moments, too.
I saw Tim Cain's vlog about the show premier and he admitted to Jonathan Nolan that he missed chunks of the show just looking at details, like vents in the vaults or the shop shelves in Filly. I honestly caught myself doing it similarly.
I watched the first half again yesterday with my two brothers and SIL, and the SIL was the only other person to play any of the games and they all just liked how it's written. One of my brothers is looking to set up FO3, NV and 4 on his new Deck OLED, which I'm stoked about.
I played about an hour of Fallout 3 when it first came out and that's the extent of my experience with the games, though of course I've seen images, memes, etc. I loved the show.
I’m watching Monster (2004-2005) anime.
It’s been on my list of things to watch for a long time and I’m not sure why I waited on it for so long. It’s basically a thriller / mystery but the the character development is outstanding. Even standalone “one off” episodes are very memorable. I’m 14 episodes in and am hopeful it’ll stick the landing.
Game Changer on Dropout continues to impress -- it's the closest thing on US TV to Taskmaster, in my opinion. Make Some Noise isn't airing new episodes right now but it's an uncensored(!) improv show (and Game Changer spinoff), also on Dropout.
I never considered that! A relatively well-connected group of talented comedians who are forced to adapt to ever-changing circumstances really summarizes both shows.
Wayne Brady told Sam Reich that only two "people" do improv right: "Us and you" (Whose Line and Dropout)
I had no idea!

Yes! The Make Some Noise episode with Wayne is really fun too
ETA how am I not following Sam on Tumblr?
Thinking on it more, another show to check out if you like Game Changer is Question Team (not to be confused with Question Time) with Richard Ayoade. Each contestant invents their own game for the others to play. It is missing the camaraderie of Taskmaster and Dropout shows, though.
Bingo was just absolute perfection.

the fact that Brennan was apparently a last minute addition, and Trapp made his bingo board in an hour and then "won" was delightful.
