When “Game of Thrones” was being developed, HBO was skeptical — really skeptical. The original pilot fell so flat with executives they ordered much of it reshot.

The show nearly didn’t end up on the air.

When it did, few expected it to be a mainstream hit

That feat is hard to replicate

The most original shows come, almost by definition, from left field, developed without the weight of network hopes or the baggage of viewer expectations.

“The next 'Game of Thrones’ won’t be anything like ‘Game of Thrones,’” said the executive who has worked on event-television projects, which makes all quests to find it urgent and all articles about them, including this one, eventually superfluous.

This reminds me of the huge spike in wanna be independent movies, after Pulp Fictions phenomenal success.

Game of Thrones subverted expectations by killing off the main central character that everyone loved. It was stunningly different and original. At least for most folks who had not read about the books. Yet media executives constantly want to churn out more of the same, because that is the safe bet, when there really is no formula for success.

It's funny. I feel like I was in the same boat as the execs initially. I was late to hop on Game of Thrones because I was so sick of that genre after lord of the rings. I thought it was just more or less the same. It wasn't until after a few seasons had aired that I decided to give it a shot. And quickly realized my initial assumption could not have been more wrong.

Genuinely hoping Worm gets a TV adaption; if not of the main story then of one of the side-stories. It's legitimately the best possible serial to adapt to an endless money-maker.

It could work with half the GoT budget, I'd imagine, or they could do a series from the perspective of Hero to justify a large budget for the main story. Either way, I'd still watch.

GoT took some time to find its audience too. I can see a show like Westworld getting similar cultural appeal.

The new trailer looks really nice (Even though it didn't feel like Westworld.).

Yeah, that trailer looks cool and I like Aaron Paul but when did he join the cast and it looks like a complete different show. It feel like the show is all over the place I just lose interest then.

He isn't in the previous seasons. And yeah, the show does suffer from "I am very smart" writing. I feel like it's the Nolan brothers' signature.

Game of Thrones is basically just a worse Legend of the Galactic Heroes in the first place. We need more of the latter and less of the former.

Perhaps I'm the only one who feels like 'fuck hollywood' lately. Why on earth would anyone trust their creations to these idiots? How many shows have we seen in the last three decades with a satisfying arc and solid ending? What is that, a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the shows that have been made?

Seems to me like hollywood itself is the problem, not the way to make more good shows. Their unions and monopolies have locked everything down into that industry so that making anything outside of it is nearly impossible - or so it seems. Frankly, I think anyone can learn to be a writer, or an actor, or an artist, at least long enough to get out one good role or one good story or one good world, so I don't recognize their monopoly on talent. It's a monopoly on mediocrity. Why are we going begging to these hacks?

Seems like the right way to do this is to build a full production infrastructure up from scratch using completely fresh talent and do it yourself - and take all the money away, letting the old industry crash and burn. How hard can it be, when writers are striking over pay, and VFX studios are closing from being cheated out of making money? When people like Harrison Ford or even Jonathan Frakes are capable of good roles without prior acting experience? Why try to film the unfilmable when so many other options exist now? Seems like this industry is ripe for an ass kicking, and all it'll take is good planning. We don't need their channels or theaters or streaming services for anything ever again, so the distribution problems are gone, and those were the only real barriers.

I can think of three 'stories' that would reach game of thrones or avengers levels. One is a scifi, one is a fantasy, and one is a western, and all three come with massive built-in fan bases. Only one of them is filmable in live action cinema, and two of them are ripe for horror elements. Two of them would require licensing from people that I'm quite sure have both never been approached and would likely say yes and gladly - if they trusted the studio.

The only part of the hollywood machine that seems worth engaging is the folks who make all the merchandise. I feel like if I knew that segment better I'd find plenty to hate there too.

I honestly can't tell if I grew up changing my tastes, or if the industry became total garbage. From where I sit both scenarios look the same to me. Do I enjoy 80s cinema more because I remember it with nostalgia, or because with a small handful of exceptions modern directors aren't fit to shine the shoes of the amateurs working in that era?

All I do know for sure is that if these people want my money, they are going to have to knock off the bush-league bullshit and make some real art. :P

Not sure if I'm going off topic, but here is an interesting project: HitRecord - Website. It was started by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He posted this trailer recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLbvYEH9Ncg

Nah, it's not so massive. A good animation studio can be started with thirty people, and absolutely anyone can learn to be a voice actor for a role or two - not everyone has to be Mel Blanc. It can start small, and build, and even afford to pay top+20% to retain talent in this kind of market where anti-worker business practices are driving salaries down at every opportunity. None of it works, though, unless the first property developed is a real firecracker and is also good enough to leave a bad taste in people's mouths when they go back to other media. It takes a 'Star Wars' to create a new 'Lucasfilm' empire. License it to all of the streaming services rather than exclusives. If they won't play ball, there are plenty of other options.

This release of a whole season at once needs to die a quick and brutal death, too - it's hurting franchises, and I'm curious how long it'll take Netflix to wake up to this. The fact that Cobra Kai is out there with zero buzz despite being far more awesome than it has any right to be is just the latest example of full season releases failing. Week to week is better for building buzz, water cooler chit chat, explanation videos, and making the episodes into a 'happening' that people gather around to watch. Doing a whole season at once kills any possibility of those network effects.

Probably a different topic all together, but I'm kinda watching less live action TV, definitely keeping to half hour shows with the exception of The Orville (which is just fun enough to keep up with.) YouTube essays can go on for a while, but that's a monthly commitment as opposed to weekly or all at once. Movies are a self contained block and then I'm done. Let's plays I can stop when I'm bored or skip around and don't feel like I'm missing anything. I guess the question is the Hour Long TV Drama format going to be on the wane post GoT or is that just a me thing.

But if you want me to call a shot, the next GoT will come out on Disney+, fite me.

I'd really like to see a TV show based on the League of Legends world. There's so much room for exploration there. They already have a lot of short stories, artworks, cinematics and lore to work with.

I'd be interested to see someone take on the Master and Commander series. There's been a couple of movies (some quite good), but the books would be better as tv.
