Probably not worth a new topic on its own, but figured it was still worth sharing this somewhere: MrBeast - $456,000 Squid Game In Real Life! p.s. @kfwyre, did you ever wind up finishing the show?

I have continued to intend to finish it! I have also continued to fail to actually finish it. So, no. 😆 I will complete it though. Soon™.

I want to watch more for closure’s sake, but I won’t lie, part of the reason it’s been easy to put off finishing it is because I’m often not in the mood to be crushed during my relaxation time.

I feel ya. The majority of shows I usually end up binging one episode after the next, but I had to take almost a week break after Squid Game Ep6 too due to how much it destroyed me. The only other show I can remember hitting me that hard, and also requiring multiple days breaks in between episodes, was Black Mirror.

That's was such a cool implementation in real life! It makes the actual show look even better.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy that so many YouTubers have the resources to pull off such high production value videos now, isn't it? Though, TBH, I don't find most of the 10M+ subscriber YouTubers all that appealing, but MrBeast is one of the few exceptions. Unlike a lot of his peers (e.g. the dirtbag Paul brothers), not only does he seem to have a genuinely good heart, but his videos are almost always good natured, and incredibly entertaining too.

p.s. Dude Perfect is another that has insanely high production value that I quite enjoy as well. Mark Rober, Brave Wilderness, Good Mythical Morning, and The Slow Mo Guys too.

I just watched a video on Brave Wilderness (thanks for the tips, btw!) and what struck me is... it has music that actually fits... genuine camera work... and a professional narrator! Somehow this was always what distinguished TV from youtube production: On youtube, almost culturally (since a lot of those top youtubers could afford more staff) they always narrate themselves, film from slightly odd camera angles, etc. Some of those newer videos are basically TV productions, everything is top notch.

It makes me almost feel a bit nostalgic. Like oldschool youtube, all these awkward cuts and "4th wall breaking" moments might be a thing of the past on mainstream youtube in a couple of years. There is certainly a trend towards higher professionalism.

But yeah, a significant portion of even ±1M subscriber channels seem to have significantly upped their production value over the last few years too. Some of that is likely due to higher expectations from viewers, but I suspect a lot of it's also simply due to high quality cameras, gimbals, mics, and lighting rigs finally becoming more widely available, compact, portable, and affordable. That, and there are also now lots of production companies and freelancers offering their editing skills to YouTubers for fairly reasonable prices, which I think is another big factor too.

Hailee Steinfeld was great as Kate Bishop, and Renner sells Hawkeye being in a "too old for this life" phase pretty well.

good casting for Bishop, right? I really hope they stick with this series, ultimately leading to her detective agency. I doubt it'll happen, but it'd be fun.

Watched the South Park "exclusive event." It definitely tries something different and works a lot better not having to crank out an episode in a week about a headline. Hope they do more with it.

I really like the original BBC version, but haven't seen the new American one yet. Have you seen the original too, and if so, do you think there is enough differences between them to be able to enjoy watching both, or is the new one just a straight 1:1 rehash?

So I watched the first two episodes of the American Ghosts. First of all, Paramount+ is a god awful streaming service. For some reason everything takes a really long time to load, and I know it’s not my internet connection.

The first two episodes of this show is essentially the first two episodes of the original. Everything is brighter, the lighting is like a classic American sitcom (think of the difference between how the American Office looks like and how the UK Office looks like.) The performance are also very sitcomy, but like old school sitcomy. It eschews the more naturalistic performances of recent sitcoms like New Girl and The Good Place in favor of the hammy acting in a lot of second rate 90s sitcom shows.

Everything happens a lot faster. The original took it’s time to introduce us to the characters, but this one just tries to get to places faster. We lose a lot of the original character development because of how much they cut out in favor of gags.

It all feels very low brow. Which is interesting considering the original is high brow English humor.

            It’s just not very good.
