I just can't listen to music and do anything else at the same time. In college most of my friends couldn't understand that if there was music playing, that it fucked with my emotions too much to study or whatever. It's interesting to see some science being done on this sort of thing.

Adding on to this, if you live in the US, Harbor Freight Tools is a new home-gamer's best friend. Their stuff is cheap and does the job. If you wear something out, buy a nicer brand next time.

I get the didactic reason for wanting to keep Debian 100% free, but for most people this is an absolute win. I opted to go with (K)Ubuntu rather than Debian on my new laptop solely because I didn't want to jump through hoops with firmware. I'm a computational scientist. I am absolutely a power user compared with the average person, but the "it just works" factor is very valuable.

Imagine everything you know about yourself - how you look, how you act, and how you think and feel about yourself. Now imagine being told by everyone around you for your entire life that you're wrong. People call you by the wrong name, refer to you as the wrong gender, and treat you like you're insane when you try to correct them. This has been happening your entire life. It feels like you've been cursed with some illusion that makes it where people can't recognize you or see you for who you are. Maybe for a while you settle into the illusion for a while, but in your mind, somewhere, you still know that's not who you are. Maybe you'll give up and just live the lie inside the illusion for the rest of your life. Maybe one day you'll wake up and fight it. It's the most exhausting thing you have ever done, either way, and it almost never ends. Maybe you'll get lucky and one day people will actually see who and what you are, but who knows?

    That's what it feels like.

I haven't but I will keep them in mind the next time I'm buying. I really like that they seem to have 5mm grid lining available on (almost?) everything. Usually I have to buy actual laboratory notebooks to get nice paper with 5mm grid. Right now I still have a few OG Moleskines that I picked up when the local art supply shop closed down. This was before their quality went to shit, and iirc I got them for like $1 each.

Diamine oxblood has a special place in my heart (pun absolutely intended!) and in my DM notebook! I'ma also a fan of Noodler's inks in general. They have great tones that flow well in most of my very cheap pens.

The only issue I have is finding notebooks that can stand up to this kind of ink. I usually end up going with watercolor painting books, which work okay. I really need to find something like a drafting notebook that has decent enough paper.

TPS tried to do the same thing as 2 and kind of failed at being funny. The gameplay is great. I really liked 3 though. The jokes and characters are toned down, there is a great social commentary, and the combat is amazing. You can totally skip TPS and not miss a thing, but give 3 a try. If you've been picking up the Epic free game of the week you may even already have it.

I agree, Rock Tunnel sucks, but it's at least pretty straightforward, and there's nothing in there other than getting through that is important. Mt. Moon though... Want a Clefable or Wigglytuff?...

Another one is Meridia in Super Metroid. The game is one of my favorite of all time, and I don't mind it as much as I used to, but the change in physics until you get the Gravity Suit sucks so much. And the enemies are bullet sponges, which is one of my least-favorite tropes in games.

Finally, there is the Water Temple in Majora's Mask. Even following a walkthrough half the time I can't finish it on time. IMO it's the worst dungeon in all of Zelda in an already pretty bad Zelda game.

Piggybacking on this comment, if you like the Windows 7/8.1/10 UI, try Kubuntu. It's the same underlying system as regular Ubuntu, but uses KDE. I've been using Linux on and off for the past 20 or so years, and it's a great time right now for Linux users. There are Linux versions of a lot of stuff, even things like Steam and MS Edge (which I actually like better than Chrome or Firefox, don't kill me!), and for the most part they just work. The only kind of iffy thing is Libre Office vs MS Office. Libre does everything I need for my personal office stuff, but if you need to there is always the web version of Office.

Finally got around to finishing the (published as of now) Southern Reach series by Jack Vandermeer. I'd loved Annihilation since someone passed it to me in the book club in grad school, but never read any of the others. They're so good! I can't wait for the fourth one!

Another good one for this year has been Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. If you liked The Martian, or hard sci-fi in general, give it a go. It's fun.

HoL is actually my favorite book. The story is slightly different depending on how you read it, but it really doesn't matter too much. I started out trying to just read it straight, but eventually had like 4 bookmarks going. Point being, just start and decide how you want to read it as you go along.

I use Google Assistant for about 5 things: reminders, timers, quick conversions while cooking, telling me when someone is at the door while I'm out, and text to speech while driving. That's it, and most of the time it works pretty good for these. Shockingly, Google has done a great job at moving reminders into Calendar and making it all work together better. I do miss location-based reminders, but I've gotten used to estimating the time when I'll be home and it works fine enough. They've said that location-based reminders will come back after the move to Calendar, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
