I have some inside knowledge of why this is. Before Disney bought Pixar, each movie took 2-5 years to make. They would usually have at max 2 feature length movies in development at a time, with different teams focusing on each one. When disney bought Pixar, they instituted a quota of 2 movies a year (not sure of the actual quota). This not only divided talent into smaller teams, it shortened the timeline to around a year for each movie. Pixar used to be very selective about what movies they would make. They had lots of good ideas they didn’t pursue because they didn’t have the technology to show it yet, or they were waiting for the better idea to invest in. With the increased demand, they had to start pursuing discarded ideas and using ideas they wouldn’t have before. Up was the last movie that was started before Disney bought Pixar.

Luckily the shortage seems to be ending. My psychiatrist said the dea is cracking down on all the online prescriptions from the pandemic (I see my psychiatrist virtually- I don’t mean that virtual prescriptions are all bad, but there were some services that were prescribing them to everyone after like a 10 minute diagnosis). I had issues earlier too, and still haven’t been able to find extended release tablets, but my ir has been filled on time without issue for a few months.

Can you talk more about your diagnosis? I find it so crazy how hypersomnia is so hard to get medical help for. Like, everyone just assumed you are lazy. But there is so much support for insomnia? They both cause you to be tired.

They were asking because short term disability for c-sections can be increased to 12 weeks. Of course I could have not answered, there’s really no way to know beforehand if you are having a C-section or not. But they also had the right to ask as it was the insurance company asking (not hr) and part of it was releasing my medical records to them.

I’m sorry you have to worry about finances, in my opinion 3 months pay should be provided for all new parents.

Those first few months are physically and emotionally exhausting. I’m not sure how much of it was PPD and how much everyone else goes through, but it really is just working in survival mode. Remember it gets better, so much better, and fast! By 9-12 months we were having so much fun again, and we love our family.

Also, if you update the jabra app, you will get an ANC update. You can only turn it on in the app but it’s great to have that option.

I have jabra earbuds and I love them. I have weirdly shaped ears so AirPods never felt like they would stay in, but these feel secure. The part I love is the hear through setting, which plays what you would normally be hearing through the buds. You can hear people talking to you as clearly as if you weren’t wearing earbuds. It’s great to just tap one ear instead of taking them in and out.

Yeah, my company covered 2 weeks of parental leave. Because I gave birth, I used short term disability for 8 weeks, but the coverage only kicked in after 1 week and there was a 1 week delay, so it ended up being 6 weeks at 70% (don’t even get me started on how that is allowed to be called 8 weeks of coverage). My husbands company covered 6 weeks at 100% of leave. So technically my husband got more paternity leave than I did maternity leave. And where we work, that coverage is considered “good” and above industry standard. It seems like the most influence I have is by seeking a good parental leave policy in my next employer, hoping to pressure employers to cover it. Oh man, having pregnancy leave would be amazing. I had constant contractions the last 4 weeks and I had to keep working until the day I went to the hospital. Lol the last week was constant “guess I’m still here! But don’t give me anything I can’t finish today!”

That’s really true. I remember working with my HR to set up my short term disability and they asked if I was hoping to have a vaginal birth or planning a c-section. Having to say the words “I hope it will be vaginal” in my office felt so invasive and wrong.

I think paid parental leave could be a good first step in decoupling healthcare from your job. For example, Massachusetts just implemented a statewide paid parental leave by adding a payroll tax to everyone which then covers the people who need it. I could see this being almost like a trial run for state healthcare coverage.

Something that has been bothering me for a long time is that the majority of voters in the US are parents. It seems paid parental leave is something that most people can empathize with needing, and that would benefit most people’s lives. So I have such a hard time understanding why it isn’t proposed more often or prioritized as a voting issue. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was shocked to hear that my own mother had to decide between going back to her job 3 weeks post partum or losing her job. I can’t believe that things have not really improved (in terms of protections for all parents, not just by industry/state/company)

I read an interesting NPR article about how the AARP solidified the aging population into a powerful voting block that has skewed lawmakers to addressing their needs. Because this organization has clear priorities and influences many voters, lawmakers have incentive to pass laws the AARP supports. This article suggested that if parents could join together and create a similar political group, it would be the biggest and most powerful voting block.

So I’m interested in what your opinions are. Do you see parental leave as important? If so, why don’t we have a national leave policy? How do we get there?

I recommend doing some reflecting and solidifying of your life goals before making big changes.

But I also agree that if you are working 12 hour days, taking a 20k salary loss but working a normal schedule isn’t actually a paycut when you do it by hour.

Can you describe the fatigues? Is it like your body doesn’t respond or is it mental fatigue too? I looked up Gilbert’s syndrome and fatigue is a symptom, but it’s possible you have a sleep disorder on top of that. I recommend you take the epworth sleepiness scale test and take that result to your primary care doctor and ask for a referral to a sleep clinic.

Are you in the US? The US has horrible parental leave policies. I would say there is no norm for paternal leave because every company has such different policies.

You might qualify for FMLA, if your company is big enough and you’ve been working there long enough. Some states require FMLA be paid, but most don’t. FMLA is 12 weeks in a year period, but your company can require you to take it consecutively so if you go back early it’s considered the end of it.

I would recommend taking as much time as you can. If you have FMLA, take the whole 12 weeks. When we had our child, my husband and I staggered our time so I had 12 weeks and then he took 12 weeks. This worked out well for us as it was during the pandemic so we were able to keep her out of daycare until 6 months old, but man it was extremely hard for me to get through those 12 weeks. I had really bad PPD/PPA, which I was at risk for but I think having more help would have lessened it. I would ask your wife if she would prefer to stagger your time or have your help. And prepare to change all your decisions when the baby is here- she might feel like she can handle things and the baby is easy or she might feel overwhelmed and need more help. Every baby and birth is different.

I was also nervous about this as anxiety is my biggest mental health struggle. My anxiety went from a 19 to a 3 using the PHQ. I have an anxious mind, so when I’m unmediated my mind races and finds anxious thoughts. On medication my mind doesn’t race and so those thoughts don’t bother me. At least, this is how my psychiatrist explained it. I don’t really experience “racing thoughts” because that is just how I’ve always been. I didn’t realize other people experienced any differently.

Just for some reference, 60*F was being reported as “arctic chill” in San Diego.

I agree that you can find perfectly acceptable coats for 150, if you know what to look for. 400 is probably overkill for SLC, I agree. But coming to a different climate from california is really hard, and advice on dealing with cold is all from the point of view of someone acclimated to it.

My winter coat was $400, but it changed my life and I use it daily for 6 months of the year for the last 10 years so it was worth it. Its so warm, I walked home from swim practice in my wet swimsuit in the snow in February at 6am, and was perfectly warm all the way home. It is overkill, but that’s what it takes for me to be social outdoors in the winter here.

Ok, coming from a different direction as a fellow former Californian: get a nice winter coat. Like spend 3-4 hundred dollars on it. Make it down, below your knees, rated for negative temperatures. I just looked up Salt Lake City climate and you can probably get away with something less expensive but it’s going to be the most expensive coat you’ve ever bought in your life.

I thought I would be fine with my system of layers and shells when I moved. I spent years suffering through the winters and dreading going outside until I caved and bought a nice coat. It opened up a world of experiences for me and I started enjoying winters! Trust me, it makes a huge difference in how isolated you feel for a huge chunk of the year.

How would adding more topics of discussion prevent discussion? Can you explain this more?

I really feel like this comment is

    1. Not informed by how tildes functions
    2. Not informed by concern for the group it is addressing
    3. Contradicting itself. It says it doesn’t want tildes to become “a place where people interact with those who are similar to them, and ignore or dismiss those who are different“, by ignoring and dismissing those who are different from the majority.
