I’m potentially the only person heavily invested in this show, but I was deeply disappointed by the ending of Castle.

I loved everything about Kate (Stana Katic). She was a compelling and complex character, her backstory story was incredibly tragic and interesting, and the romantic tension they built up with Richard (Nathan Fillion) over four seasons is the best I’ve ever seen.

Once they broke that romantic tension though, the show understandably struggled to maintain the same level of intrigue. That’s not its biggest failing though, as I think there was enough momentum behind the characters and plot to carry it. But the final seasons became a nonsensical train wreck.

Behind the scenes, there was apparently conflict amongst the cast and crew, which I can confidently say bled into the narrative. The final episode, due to cancellation, is so unsatisfying and contrived that I’ve only watched it the one time. Those first four seasons were pure magic though, particularly season four, and I’ll continue to rewatch them for years to come. I think the story could’ve more or less ended there, though there’s a few loose ends that would need to be tied up.

I’ll start by saying, I do believe GRRM will finish the series. Mostly because you can tell he cares a great deal about this world and the characters he’s created. He’s also continually worked on and released new projects set in Westeros, which signals to me that he’s still flushing out the world. Ultimately, I’ve gathered that he sees a Song of Ice and Fire as his most difficult project and mangnum opus to wrap up the entire story. Regardless of how long it takes to write the “Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring”, I think something will be released one day.

Putting that aside. The story itself is so good, in my opinion, because it’s inspired by the intricacies of history. There is no satisfying “ending” when learning about the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, for example, because although some key events may have a clear beginning, middle, and end, most of the events bleed into new events that form new empires.

The most unsatisfying ending they could have created is the one in the show. No empire can fall, no war can be fought, without collateral damage. Damage that is bigger and further reaching than a few people or houses. Ultimately, the story should be never ending in that regard.

I think how GRRM will organically end the series is with the end of winter. I don’t think it needs to have a perfectly tied bow on it where all plot-lines are resolved, because that never happens in reality. But I do think it needs a clear narrative, of some kind, that addresses the White Walkers, the Targaryen prophecies/dragons, and the Iron Throne/Seven Kingdoms. If he can do that, then everyone else can be left at various stages of their journeys, just as we met them at various stages. Some character cliff hangers would be more satisfying than others, of course, but I think it’s more important to show the end of this season (literally and figuratively) and the collapse of this empire as a whole. Ideally without it being ignorant to the fact a new empire would simply rise in its place and feast on its corpse, as history does.

I have a 14 Pro Max that I got on release day, so almost 11 months ago now.

Based on my battery usage summary, I use my phone actively 6 hours/day (4 hours/day idly) on average. My battery capacity is reported to be at 95%. On a practical level, I charge my phone every night and haven’t given much thought to the battery life throughout the day.

Anecdotally, this highlights how much “better” the Pro Max battery is compared to the standard and Pro models. That’s not particularly surprising, as the Pro Max battery is 35% larger than the Pro (4323mAh vs 3200mAh). In general, more capacity with the same discharge rate results in a longer lasting battery.

However, I suspect other factors are at play given how much degradation you (and others in this thread) have experienced in such a short period of time.

Beyond screen and battery size, the Pro and Pro Max have identical processors and RAM. Granted the Pro Max screen is only 10% larger, so it’s got a substantially higher battery to screen ratio, which is probably an important factor.

Other things may be affecting the Pro too. Perhaps it’s related to heat dissipation in the smaller chassis? A software issue with applications or the OS? Different battery management habits?

In any case, hopefully Apple is able to investigate it more thoroughly and can address it in the 15 models. I suspect they will drop some of the specs of the Pro model in September (if we can trust the rumour mill), which may inadvertently increase battery life.

I think it can be useful to ask yourself how you formed the habits you already have. For example, something like brushing your teeth is often a habit because you have a set routine to determine when you’ll brush, everything is laid out for you to get started, and you can feel/see the benefits when you follow through.

This seems to apply to most things in my experience. Start by making the barrier of entry low, so that it’s easy to get started. For example, if you want to learn to play the guitar, have your guitar out and beside the place you like to play. Also have everything else right there and ready to go: sheet music, tuner, capo, metronome, etc.

Next, make a time for when you’ll do the thing. I think what a lot of people get wrong is trying to schedule a very specific time. This may work for some people, but I’ve found it’s easier to make plans that are associated with something else. For example, “once I’ve done X, I’m going to play my guitar” or “every time time I come into this room, I’m going to play for 5 minutes”.

Finally, set up a reward structure for yourself. Personally, I find it more helpful to make small rewards everyday, then to use “goals” as a motivator. For example, “once I play my guitar today, I’m going to treat myself with Y” instead of “if I practice everyday I’ll eventually be able to play that song I like”. The closer you can bring the reward to the thing you want to build a habit around, the easier it is to stick too.

To acknowledge your final point, I don’t track my habits for this exact reason. It doesn’t matter to me if I skip occasionally, because the goal is long-term consistency. It’s more beneficial to try and do a few minutes everyday and miss a few of them for whatever reason. Those minutes really add up over time and it helps engrain the behaviour.

Overall, I’d try to do less planning and more action. Keep the barrier to entry low and always start the thing now, not tomorrow.

I made another comment in this thread to your point, but yes, this bill seems like a fundamental misunderstanding of the internet. Particularly in regards to linking and how heavily reliant the internet is on Meta and Google. See the 2021 Facebook Outage as an example.

Ultimately, they’re not just “big players” in this space, they’ve become cornerstones of the internet as we know it. And, as you said, I do get the impression that Trudeau and the Liberal party are trying to “punish” these large tech companies, which further emphasizes their tech illiteracy. In my mind.

I think there are very real issues here that need to be addressed and it is concerning that two private entities can hold so much power over information. But this bill doesn’t actually address any of that. They’re also +20 years too late to be upset about this, in my opinion, but that seems to be the swan song of the government and technology.

To your final point, I think Google and Meta learned from that Australian bill and won’t make the same “mistake”. Put another way, I don’t think they’ll back down. They’ve already stated they’ll allow for SOS news, which was a major factor in the Australian negotiations.

At this stage, I kind of have the opposite opinion.

I think Google is right and, at its core, this bill is charging for links. Which is a terrible and horrifying precedent to set. If, as you mentioned, other countries follow suit, the future of links all over the internet are going to be paywalled, making information even less accessible.

Despite the fact I hate Peirre and his [Conservative] party, I’m inclined to agree with him here. This seems like another bill passed by our current government to regulate and censor what content Canadian’s can see on the internet. The other being Bill C-11.

I can see what Trudeau and the Liberal party are trying to do. There are very real issues with media and content that need to be addressed. But perhaps inadvertently encouraging ignorance and news illiteracy amongst Canadian’s is a price too high to pay?

Especially when I don’t expect American companies like Meta and Google to care about Canadian’s. Why would they? There’s less people in all of Canada than in California. We’re also a separate nation that’s benefiting from and relying on their services. However, I do expect the Canadian Government to care. Yet they seem more concerned with “winning” and “standing up to bullies” than they do with how this will actually affect people now and in the future.

Overall, I’m pessimistic at the moment. I don’t see Google or Meta losing any cards here. I see Canadian’s losing and an ugly precedent for the future.

I’ve tried a lot of variations based on what local ingredients are available and they’ve all turned out quite well in the end. As long as you balance the spice, umami, and acidity along the way, there’s a lot room to improvise. :)

I wish I had proportions for these, but I usually eyeball it nowadays.

    Homemade Thai Green Curry Paste:

    • Avocado Oil
    • Finely chopped Shallots
    • Finely chopped Garlic
    • Minced lemongrass
    • Minced galangal
    • Sliced galangal leaves
    • Kaffir lime leaves
    • Kaffir lime zest
    • Chopped cilantro
    • Chopped Serrano and Thai Chilis
    • Homemade vegan fish sauce*
    • Salt
    • Spices: Cumin, Coriander, White Pepper

Ultimately need to prep, fry, and smash the ingredients as desired and then blend until smooth.

    Homemade Vegan “Fish” Sauce:

    • Sesame oil
    • Avocado oil
    • Dried mushrooms (dry your own shiitaki, porcini, and/or portobello mushrooms)
    • Wakame seaweed
    • Soy sauce
    • Garlic
    • Lime juice
    • Salt
    • Coconut sugar

Combine in a pot with homemade broth or water, bring to a boil and then simmer “until done”. Strain into a bottle.

Watching the latest NHL or MLB game is much more accessible and readily available to watch. This makes it easier to engage in commentary in real-time on a social media feed, for example. A game you have to hunt for to even watch, potentially after the fact, is not going to fit that format.

I would argue that this game is already being built from the ground up for multiplayer. I know quite a few of the concept artists working on the project, and I think there’s a lot of excitement about what can be done with the mechanics and within TLOUs world in a standalone multiplayer game. Granted, that doesn’t mean everyone will like it when it releases, but it’s always cool to see studios try new things.

Everything you’ve said makes complete sense to me.

I support Nebula as well, in additional to some smaller Patreon accounts, and ultimately: I wish there was a more curated site with all the content I actually wanted to watch. YouTube is definitely bogged down with a lot of “noise” and content I’m not interested in. I’m certain that’s the case for everyone, and is due in no small part to the Home tab algorithm and rising prevalence of Shorts.

Similarly, I feel the same about Instagram, Reddit, and other platforms. As they grow they tend to lose their initial identity and large communities seem to trend towards mediocrity. I’m not exactly sure why, but I think the sheer volume of content overwhelms people, so whatever thing ends up trending is what people latch onto and it dominates the space. Ultimately leading to the fact you end up wasting a lot of time to find a few gems in the rough.

Served with crispy tofu, coconut rice, Thai basil, and homemade “roti” (using sweetened condensed coconut milk and avocado oil).

I think we’ve had some variation of this recipe every week for the last two years. It’s not too hard for me to make after work, makes great leftovers, freezes well, and seems to be well liked.

I do try to make as many things from “scratch” as I can, since I find growing the vegetables and herbs, as well as making my own milks, dough, and tofu, really elevate the whole thing. Though ingredients that are store bought or from farmers markets work just as well.
