We’re a no shoe household. Downstairs is all hard floor so if absolutely needed then shoes can be kept on to quickly grab something, but upstairs is carpeted for the most part so definitely no shoes. To be honest, I’m UK based and I could probably count on my hands the number of houses I’ve been in where shoes were allowed, and at least half of those were student houses. I’d suggest it’s fairly uncommon here, though I’m a no socks guy too. Barefoot is just more comfy!

I saw Tom Petty at Hyde Park in London the summer before his passing. He’s been a long time favourite of mine so to see him outdoors on a glorious evening with an adoring crowd singing along to every word was just sublime. It was a really special show and ultimately it just looked like Tom and the Heartbreakers were having so much fun up on stage. When the news of his passing came a few weeks later, it was a gut punch, but I count my lucky stars I got to see him doing what he loved before he left.

Right?! I’m at ‘played for more than 65 hours’ according to my Nintendo profile, and not only is that pretty hard to believe, but I genuinely feel like I’ve only scratched the surface. The thing is I enjoy a good open world game, but typically I find my investment and enthusiasm tends to plummet around the 30 hour mark, at which point I usually beeline for the end to see the story through before all motivation is lost. And yet with TotK, I’m still excited to play whenever I get the chance. Just being in the world they’ve created is so enthralling and crucially for me at least, the core gameplay is both simple enough to minimise friction, but with such depth so as to keep things interesting. For the record, I can’t remember the last time I was so gushing about a game - TotK is the real deal.

I mean it’s an interesting, if rather obvious, article but I can’t lie, I am disappointed at the lack of a 60fps option. We’ve been spoilt so far this gen with some excellent examples, such as Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West, and for me at least the precedent has been set. I will say Jedi Survivors performance mode was so poor at launch that I ended up playing through in quality mode and found that acceptable, so I can only hope Starfield is absolutely rock solid at 30fps.

I suspect people who go out of their way to find a third party app are more invested in Reddit than your average Joe who browses for 5 mins a day on the official app, and thus necessary to keep the latter returning. Maybe they have data to say otherwise and this will all turn out to be a lot of hot air, but I feel they do need to directly appeal to the third party app user base if there’s any chance of maintaining some goodwill.

We’re witnessing an arms race in the AI sphere, and with the potential rewards on offer it’s not difficult to see why the big tech companies are racing to get ahead. I actually do buy Microsoft’s suggestion that they need to learn from real-world usage; surely that’s just the natural of this kind of technology. However, the ethical implications are immense. As it stands, ChatGPT, Bing and Bard are all incredibly valuable resources, but make no mistake, we are the ones being used.

Oh boy, I don’t see RYM mentioned much these days! I used to use it religiously back in the day, around 2008-2012. I still occasionally visit every now and again, but it feels like the community has become smaller or less active. At one point, new releases would get hundreds of reviews in the first week, whereas these days it’s seems to be just a handful except for the super big artists. Maybe it’s a result of streaming and music becoming more diverse and available?

I was looking to see if anyone had mentioned Peep Show. I’m British living in the UK and as far as I’m concerned no other comedy captures so much of the prevailing culture in Britain during the shows run, if not through an absurd lens. For this reason, I’ve often wondered how well the show translates to audiences outside of the UK. There’s the big references to current affairs, e.g. politics, which may be fairly obvious, but it’s so rich in minor and seemingly throwaway details that really make it so relatable as a British person. Either way, brilliant show!

I find the discussion of current announcements is usually pretty weak because in the end it's very little about people's interaction with a game and more about quick impressions/prejudices.

I do agree the quality of discussion is generally quite low for a lot of the big gaming subs, though there is something to be said for enjoying the general excitement around announcements even if it’s not articulated in a particularly compelling or insightful way. However, I do find Reddit super helpful for hearing about gaming news and announcements and so I have missed that during the blackout. I know for sure there are alternative sources, but Reddit just makes finding content so easy.

I haven’t used RSS feeds in years, but with social media all going to crap I’m interested in getting back into it. Where do you typically subscribe to feeds, is it via specific websites or is there like a ‘library’ somewhere? At this point, I don’t even know what I’m missing, so a big list of feeds would be a helpful starting point.

I’m not sure I’m entirely qualified to answer given that I haven’t played many Obsidian games, except for ~2 hours of Outer Worlds, which sadly I didn’t really gel with. That said, I found this trailer pretty intriguing. I can’t lie, it gave me massive Skyrim vibes and though that’s probably just because of the first person perspective and high fantasy setting, if Avowed can capture even a fraction of the wonder and excitement Skyrim offered at launch then I’m definitely interested. Two things that particularly struck me were the variety of locales and enemies, both of which looked pleasingly varied.

You mention opinions have been divisive; I haven’t seen any reactions yet - and with the Reddit blackout, probably won’t for a few days - but I’d be interested to know what these are.

Honestly, one of my favourite sets so far has been the Lego Creator Majestic Tiger. It’s a really fun and interesting build and the end result is honestly quite incredible for the cost. I actually have my eye on a few Creator sets (particularly the Viking and Pirate ships) as they seem to cover a lot of ground and generally fall within a very reasonable price range. Beyond that, I love the Star Wars sets; the franchise just lends itself perfectly to Lego and there’s a huge amount of nostalgia for me. I also have to mention the Horizon Tallneck because it’s a beautiful and dramatic model. I’d really like to see more sets themed around video games in general as it seems like a rich source.

This is my experience too for the most part. What I’ve found especially interesting is that a lot of the queries I get throughout any given day that I can’t get to immediately are miraculously solved by the time I get to them. In other words, people are more capable than they realise and sometimes a lack of instant communication, such as in an office environment, is beneficial. Obviously I’m not expecting my colleagues to have an intricate understanding of my subject area, after all that’s exactly why I’m there, but use me for that purpose and not for answering trivial queries which don’t require an expert.

Hi all - yet another long time Reddit user here looking for a new hangout. I’ve been mostly lurking all week and I’m genuinely excited to see the level of discourse on display.

    So a bit about me?

    • I’m a husband and a father of two - the newest addition arrived just this week and she’s beautiful!
    • I have several guitars and enjoy making music, usually with a classic rock kinda vibe, though my music taste is all over the place.
    • I’m really into gaming and currently obsessing over Tears of the Kingdom.
    • In the last couple of years, I’ve rekindled my childhood love of Lego and I’m thoroughly enjoying sharing this with my toddler who is already building sets several years above his age.
    • My garden is my sanctuary and though I hesitate to call myself a gardener, I love creating a beautiful space for my family and I to enjoy.
    • I’m a digital analyst by trade with a lot of experience with the Google stack; Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics etc.

Look forward to contributing where I can and learning from the community. Cheers!

That’s a perfect example of why it’s such an engaging game; everything is just so organic. You never feel forced into pretty much anything and you’re free to approach any particular scenario how you see fit, which ironically is what most open world games market themselves on but routinely fail to realise.

Yep, I need to put in another vote for TotK… it’s just utterly brilliant.

I really enjoyed BotW and I’d probably go as far as to say it is one of the best games I’ve played, but I’ll be damned if TotK isn’t a perfect example of iterating on an already amazing experience. The thing about BotW that was so enthralling 6(?) years ago was how organic the open world felt. There was a ton of stuff to see and do, but it never felt as forced or repetitive as other games in the genre. The emphasis was purely on discovery and the game left it completely to you to decide what you want to do and in what order. It’s easy to understate how revolutionary that felt at the time and I’d suggest very few games have managed to emulate that feeling since.

And then TotK comes along, and it’s literally everything BotW was - and so much more. The world is even more jam packed with things to see and do, but the master stroke is giving the player seemingly unlimited freedom to achieve them. And despite the addition of so many new mechanics, it all just works flawlessly. I’m excited just thinking about it, and as a 30-something dad of two who has very little time to invest in gaming these days, this is pretty much the highest accolade I can give.

So in summary, I thoroughly agree, it is a masterpiece.

That’s an interesting point of comparison, if only because as much as the iPad has become the definitive tablet, I feel there’s still a large contingent that don’t see the value or purpose of this device category. Obviously, it’s been an incredible success regardless, but it’s probably easier for your average person to at least see and understand use cases for a tablet, whereas VR and AR is a lot harder to market. Of course, if anyone is going to achieve it, it’s going to be dapple. Exciting times ahead…
