Words themselves don't matter, the intent they're used with does. You can be thoroughly foul to another person without using any swearwords at all, and you can pepper shits and cunts all over without offending any but the most thin-skinned.

Seeing as pointless malice is already so frowned-upon on this site, arbitrarily limiting the words you can use is pointless and counter-productive. The existing culture is a far better one, and removing swear words from it wouldn't improve it any, in my opinion.

Aside from Cinnamon? Just less bloat. Mint doesn't have as much bundled software, afaik, which is exactly what I, personally, was looking for.

Honestly, I had the same exact issue as you when I was looking for my linux distro - as a layuser, there's no good way to figure out the differences between them without checking it out yourself. Which is what I ended up doing. Installed each distro, set it up the way I liked it, used it for a bit.

Mint won out in the end, but it's not a huge margin. I could easily still be using debian and be happy with it.

Honestly, most of theh differences between the various distros are cosmetic. The most consequential, for me, has been the package manager - I prefer Ubuntu's over Debian's, just because the former is more popular (and therefore better supported, but only slightly).

Personally, I'd recommend that you try a few distros that sound interesting. Once you settle on one, use that for a bit until you inevitably outgrow it, and then search for another one that fulfills the needs you've discovered.

Linux Mint. I tried out Debian before that, and I think Ubuntu. I'm tech-literate, but not a Linux power-user.

For me at least, Linux Mint seems to be the sweet spot. I dropped Debian because I had to keep tinkering with things repeatedly when installing new programs (not every time, but enough to be annoying). Mint is pretty much Ubuntu under the hood, which means that pretty much every Linux program out there supports it.

With Cinnamon, Mint is similar enough to Windows that it was immediately familiar and easy to use, but it of course allows for all the customization Linux does normally.

It astonishes me that this is legally binding, according to them. If this is the case, why doesn't every company include such a clause in their ToS? It costs them nothing, surely.

The first one I can think of is Arx Liberatis, a source port of Arx Fatalis. It's been a while since I played it, but IIRC it did a great job of making the game playable and accessible on a modern PC. Keep in mind that you'll have to compile the newest version yourself if you want to try the absolute newest additions, as the last release is five years behind.

Next up there's OpenJK, which, again, takes the sources of Jedi Academy/Jedi Outcast and modernizes them. Aside from the project itself, there's some neat mods for it that were impossible with the normal game.

And lastly there's one that I just now became aware of - OpenMW, a source port of Morrowind. I have not even tried it yet, but the only thing that ruined Morrowind's experience for me was the combat, which should be quite fixable with this port - and that makes me quite excited for it.

I'm looking forward to trying Ghost Mode out, because it sounds like it at least attempts to fix the problems I noticed with the game.

As a rule, I'm extremely suspicious of any political agenda pushed by a large corporation. Almost always, those corporations care first and foremost about their profit, and whatever they might say, that agenda will somehow increase those profits.

Financially motivated politics is a horrible thing. See: for-profit prisons and what they lobby, or so-called "big oil" doing their best to discredit climate change, or tobacco companies doing their best to literally kill as many people as possible for money.

But! That doesn't mean that any idea pushed by a corporation is immediately a bad one. The fact that Uber and other companies may try and exploit UBI is not an argument against UBI. It's an argument against those companies and the rules surrounding them, or lack thereof.

Walmart pays its employees so little that they're forced to rely on food stamps. Is this an argument against food stamps, or against Walmart?

Aside from that, Carbine studios were extremely loyal to their fanbase and really tried their best with the game post-release, afaik. It's a huge shame to see a studio like that disappear.

I know very little about American law, obviously, but it kinda seems like the thing to do. Like I'd probably prefer a judge that I can trust to follow the law, idk.

Snarkiness aside, I'm genuinely curious why on earth it works this way.

Imagine universes as planets, instead. On Earth, we ask - "Why is there life on Earth?". On Mars, there's nobody there to ask.

And, sure, there's a mechanistic answer as to how exactly life on earth came to be - but that's all. There's no greater reason, no intelligent cause.

At best we might eventually learn some general rules - life exists because the right circumstances arose for a self-propagating process to start, and those, by their very nature, will continue whenever possible.

But there is no satisfying answer to the question as to why the right circumstances arose on Earth, of all places. And I think there is likewise no satisfying answer to your question.

I think this "gaming disorder" is missing the forest for the trees.

As you say, the issue isn't the games themselves, it's the pattern of escapist behaviour. Games, in this context, can be replaced with anything - I go on huge reading binges when overly anxious, for instance, to the point where it's unhealthy in exactly the same way. I used to do it with games, too.

If anything, this general pattern of behaviour is what should be given a proper name and a treatment - not a specific sub-example of it.
