I'm Jewish and if someone tweeted, "Are jewish people genetically predisposed to burn faster in the sun, thus logically being only fit to live underground like groveling goblins?" I would be hard pressed to find the person not guilty of racism, no matter the intent.

I find, as a white person, it's a lot easier to let these kind of statements roll off of you. My girlfriend is ethnically Cantonese, and her twitter is similarly full of posts like Jeong's, talking about how she hates / can't stand / is tired of white people. But at the end of the day I know she's not talking about all white people, instead she's using "white" as a synecdoche for "conservative" which might be unfair, but I don't necessarily consider racist. Jeong might not be going for that exactly, but reading her tweets with even the slightest bit of open-mindedness, you can see pretty quickly that they're not meant 100% seriously.

Something that you can do if you want to move the discussion along, but don't want to leave a long reply, is ask lots of questions. Especially if someone appears to know a lot about a subject.

I don't think it serves anyone's purposes to try and fill quotas, especially partisan quotas. Right now it's a small enough community where I'm not concerned about voices in the minority being drowned out. Most discussions I've read through, so far, take place on an individual level; in that case partisanship hardly matters. What I don't want to see happen is the emergence of a kind of factionalism that drowns out those real interpersonal debates.

@Cleb, have you heard of Rachel's, by any chance? I only discovered Stars of the Lid because someone told me they had a similar sound.

There was an article in the Economist back in 2017 called "The Founding of Maple Valley" which described how Canada's tech economy has evolved itself to "make a virtue of limited resources." The understanding is that Canada doesn't have the same potential for pure capital investment as the United States, but this also means there's much less pressure to turn a profit. And in the end, companies end up moving to where the intellectual capital resides.

"Canadaโ€™s open-information strategy makes it hard for the government to measure the return on its investment. Nonetheless, the soft benefits are clear. In June a new research lab called Element AI raised $102m. In recent months Google has set up an office in Toronto, and Facebook and Samsung have opened AI labs in Montreal."

But if you have any interest in Cold War or communist history, it's an absolutely pitch-perfect satire.

I'm Canadian, about to start my fourth year of University as an English / Creative Writing major. I don't play video games or watch superhero movies, so I usually find myself a bit on the outs with internet communities. Alice Munro is my favourite author, Ezra Pound is my favourite poet. I have a huge fascination with urban planning, post-Maoist Chinese history, and technology. I love baseball because of statistics, Formula One for engineering, and chess even though I'm terrible at it.

There's a book of poetry I've been looking for, I haven't read it but it was one of the works being discussed in a lit theory book I was using for one of my classes, and it's called "Mad Science in Imperial City." The poet, Shanxing Wang, is a PhD in mechanical engineering who came to the US in 1991, and the poetry is a mix of his technical background with the political upheaval of the 1980s (leading up to Tienanmen Square).

It's no longer available through his publisher (who still advertise the book at $14), but there are copies on Amazon for over a hundred dollars. None of my professors could find copies in circulation when I asked.

Find a genre you're interested in, search for the chart, and listen to one or two albums on there, you'll get a good foothold in it.

What I do is divide my music by artist (rather than by album, which can get tedious), and I have an album in my temporary folder that's also all sorted by artist. So when I drag and drop all those albums to sync with my master, it adds all the artists I don't have, and merges folders for all the ones that I do.

One of my favourite moon facts is that our moon might not technically be a moon, but instead you could look at the Earth and Moon together as a bi-planetary system.
