To answer your question, each lemmy instance provides an API, which is a set of instructions on how to send and receive information. Writing proprietary software that interacts with that API does not need to be open source, since it does not need to incorporate any of the project's source code in order to send the data.

This is similar to how there can be closed source software on an open source operating system. The operating system provides several protocols to interact with that do not require implementing any of it's code.

I'm really enjoying the mobile interface, if there is one improvement I would like to see be made is the ability to quickly swipe through on a touch interface and collapse comment threads that I want to skip. I'm using a larger phone, and have pretty big fingers, so I'm constantly hitting the username and accidentally begin reading their post history. Maybe I just have poor hand eye coordination, but the collapse button is small and really close to the edge of the screen.

This could easily be remedied in a couple ways, by either adding a couple more spaces between the button and username, or by making the button rectangular instead of square.

Here's an idea, have a separate tilde that is just titled memes, that is completely separate from the rest of the site and does not spill into the main front pages. Don't bother to have subtildes, and just let it be a wild west of unorganized mess so that people that insist on being able post low effort stuff can get pointed in that direction.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I don't want another r/politics. The top rated comments on many of the posts on there are some variation of "Traitor!" and "Fuck That Guy!". Even though it might feel good knowing that everyone else feels like blasting obscenities at the person you don't like, it absolutely adds nothing to the conversation. The reason why I want to get away from Reddit is that when I walk into the real world, those type of thoughts permeate my mind when I'm having conversations with people. I might not say those things out loud, but I feel like people are being unreasonable if they don't have the same attitude. My fault for being easily manipulated by group think I guess, but at least I'm trying to get away from it.

I almost wouldn't mind extremely heavy handed moderation in that regard. One sentence declarations of opinions about people should be wiped out.

Correct, but seeing the difference in color in already visited links is just a tiny issue. Almost all websites that I visit nowadays usually have highly contrasting colors, thicker lines, or varying patterns, because usability for colorblindness has been a main point in web design for a while. Here's a really well done guide: https://www.designmantic.com/community/website-design-guide-color-blind.php

Specifically this diagram should be pretty helpful: https://www.designmantic.com/community/images/web-design-guidelines/colorblindness-indistinguishable.png

"People with deuteranomaly and protanomaly are collectively known as red-green colour blind and they generally have difficulty distinguishing between reds, greens, browns and oranges. They also commonly confuse different types of blue and purple hues."

I personally lack red cones. Using red/green or blue/purple links will confuse up to to 5% of the population, myself included.

Edit: Someone in my house mentioned that they are different colors. Please choose a different color as it is not color-blind friendly :)

It seems to me that Patreon takes 5%, and payment processors take on average of 2.9%. Those few "extra cents" are probably notable on small $1 donations, but I've heard people mention that the total charges are usually no more than 10%.

40% would be Steam & app store level charges, which would be outrageous considering Patreon doesn't provide nearly as many services.
