The way I think about it is I use facebook for sharing photos of my kids to friends and family members, and looking at photos of their family activities in return.

Then, I use LinkedIn to keep in touch with former coworkers the same way, though instead of posting about our kids we are sharing posts and stories that are relevant to what we do in our field. Or, I will connect with customers and partners from other companies that I'm actually working on projects with to grow the network and keep in touch with them over time.

It's also the primary way that I market and grow my podcast audience, since it's a business podcast.

What I would love is if people would stop posting politics and social justice stuff there. Just tell me what interesting tech stuff you're working on and keep the politics out of the office. I'm progressive but I subscribe to the Brian Armstrong philosophy. If it isn't directly related to growing our business, put it on facebook or instagram or whatever for your friends.

To me twitter is the really weird place because people use it for politics, professional stuff, keeping up with friends, sharing academic information, hearing what famous people think, and all kinds of other jumbled nonsense. Pure cacophony.

They have the memory of a gerbil and the creativity of a Saturday morning cartoon with no "internal state" to actually create a real relationship. Maybe one day.

The real issue isn't some AI chatbot, once you start seeing systems that combine sex machines with a VR headset that creates a stronger orgasm response than you get with a physical partner, people will get MORE addicted to that than they are to regular porn today and feel even less pull to establish and maintain a relationship with another human.

There are a bunch of early prototypes people are building (check out buttplug.io if you'd like to know more) but at some point big companies will put together integrated packages. The AI algorithms will just figure out what you like and drill down on that and provide it better and more often than a human would. It will be a big money business. HUGE money.

I don't understand why you say the result is the same. For yellow cabs there is a fixed supply at all times because there's a certain number of medallions and it isn't enough to meet the demand during peak hours (when its raining, when the subways are messed up, from 3-7pm, when bars let out on Th-Sa, etc).

With ubers there is a variable supply. There are lots of uber drivers that ONLY drive during peak times, because of surge pricing the rates are higher so supply goes up, and MORE people can get rides as a result. It's a much more functional system.

who can get a cab is determined by wealth, not equity.

We're talking about having a private driver for the duration of your trip, it's a luxury item anyway. If you want equity, talk about improving the public transit either with better service or by making it completely free.

Why do I care if the price for an Uber is low, if I can't get one anyway?

The solution isn’t to deny it for people who need it for weight loss it’s for the government to remove the monopoly on a drug that’s helping to cure an epidemic of obesity and significantly scale up production. The government are more than capable of doing that for a national health emergency and I don’t know of one that would qualify more than this.

It’s not snake oil (it works for sure). So does speed and meth (and adhd drugs to lesser extent) by suppressing appetite. Time will tell what the long term effects are.

I just don’t understand why people are still putting up with it. The insane prices restaurants charge coupled with the routine poor service and long waits have led us to drastically reduce the amount we eat out and when we do, we opt for the extreme high end where they are able to have good service still.

I shop almost exclusively online now because having to wait in line to give someone money is an insulting waste of my time. That also includes getting pharmacy orders delivered, because pharmacy customer service is terrible. Ok you don’t have adhd meds right now, and you can’t even tell me what other location of your national chain might have them? You want me to personally call 50 different locations to see which one has them instead of just doing your job and finding one for me? What’s the point of being a National chain if you don’t have unified supply chain management to solve this problem? GTFOH I’ll just pay an online pharmacy to ship it out tomorrow.

I switched to using OneMedical because just being able to text my doctor in an app or talk to them on zoom is way easier than taking multiple hours off for the inevitable round trip and waiting around a doctors office when 90% of the needs can be met in a 15 minute zoom or text chat anyway.

When you say it’s a “real chore” what do you mean? Does she break down crying and have hours-long screaming fits if you try to make her shower?

For us it’s just what the kids do before bedtime. Return from school, some downtime to decompress, homework, dinner, shower, brush, read, lights off at 8pm. A warm shower at bedtime will also help them get ready and fall asleep easier just like a cold plunge in the morning will wake you up for your day ahead (we don’t make the kids take a cold shower in the morning, though I do it myself).

Does lotion not help keep the skin from drying out?

The number of parents of small kids who have their kids shower once a week shocked me. If my kids go outside to play at the playground, or go to school, their odor is overwhelming to me when they come home. Everybody showers once per day here, usually the adults in the morning before work and the kids at night.

Michael Pollan in his book Omnivores Dilemma discusses how snack foods are designed to be addictive and to make it less likely for you to feel full when you eat them. Very smart people design them such that more sales happen. Like casino machines.

It isn't just snack foods. Huberman Lab has talked about studies showing that the gut has its own nervous system, and even when you put sugar directly into the stomach (bypassing any pleasurable sense of sweet taste) the gut nervous system will send signals to the brain telling you to eat more. So now you see companies adding sugar even to non-sweets and non-snack foods to hack your brain so you eat more of their food and give them more profit. Bread is a perfect example, you don't need to have a bunch of added sugar in bread, but so much bread has added sugar. Or chinese food, which also has a bunch of added sugar even in dishes that are savory (i.e. not just the ones covered in sweet orange sauce).

    • Exemplary

I'm going to oversimplify it, but imagine for a moment that some people's body/brain are just broken in such a way that they don't feel full until they've way over eaten. When a normal/healthy person eats, their body emits the GLP-1 hormone which leads to signaling satiety (fullness to the brain) so they feel full and stop eating. If that pathway is broken for some reason, then people will over eat
Wegovy/Ozempic and other semaglutides mimic this GLP-1 hormone, so you feel full with a normal amount of food. It isn't necessarily a "forced diet", but if you are overweight because of overeating and cut back to a normal amount of food, you will lose weight because it takes a lot of extra calories to maintain being overweight.

It also slows down how quickly your stomach your empties the food, so you feel full longer and don't need to eat so frequently.

I think people do frequently combine it with switching to a more healthy diet as well by cutting out carbs, drinking less, etc.

How can one maintain such a weight if they've never learned to cope with having to eat healthy, and more importantly, consistently less.

Maybe society will decide that some people should take this medication forever, because that's still better than being obese and all the complications that come along with that. There are many other medications that people take forever (blood pressure, anti-depressants, hormone replacement, etc) and I don't think there's anything wrong with it. If it makes your life better, and it creates better outcomes at a societal level too, society should pay for it. Having an increasingly worse obesity problem is a much worse state of affairs.

100%, wfh is amazing for adhd people who can’t get work done in a traditional office setting, especially now that a traditional office setting is an open office plan.

When I started my career it was 10x10 high walled cubes. Then 8x8 high walled cubes. Then 8x6 short walled cubes where you were subjected to the visual and aural noise of the entire floor. Then they just went tables with no partitions full open office. Over the last 23 years it’s just gradually gotten worse.

I now only take remote jobs and anytime my employer forces me back to an office I just find a new job that pays more money and quit. It’s happened to me at the last 3 jobs, I’m never gong back to commuting and office work.
