After reading the article, I enjoyed it but wonder why life.women and not just ~life? He discusses likely downsides and obstacles on both sides. Music stars go on tour. Male sports stars travel for games and have a track record of being likely to cheat. Distance relationships are hard for everyone. Good analysis, but why emphasize women?

As someone who is not American and has no clue about Miss Siwft's life, I wonder why anyone's dating life should be on a sports site at all.

I suppose they do, yeah. When something eventful happens. This article is not really about anything concrete, it's more like speculation on what might happen. A "what if". Doesn't seem newsworthy to me. Reads like a High School gossip column (do those actually exist?).

But again, I'm neither American nor knowledgeable about either Taylor Swift or the athlete she might date.

I have noticed a trend lately in news of people writing articles about things that might happen, as if that speculation was news. I hate it.

Well its not something "that might happen" she was in the box at the game sitting next to Kelce's mom. For people who care about such things it was a media event!

Deadspin had a very public unraveling a few years ago and this is the first I've heard of the site since then. So I guess it helps bring clicks back.

I'm not a Swift fan personally but I am fascinated by celebrity and fame and how it affects people (both the fan base and the celebrities themselves), their behaviors, influences thinking and dictates choices and lifestyle. Maybe I'm cynical but it feels like Swift has been repeating a pattern of not just farming relationships for song material but also actively choosing certain people based on popularity and public perception. The press coverage of Matt Healy and Travis Kelce feel like her "testing the waters". The reaction to Healy was so negative, it didn't surprise me that nothing came of it. I think if she gets an overwhelmingly positive response to the footage of her cheering on Kelce (along with his mom who looked pretty nonplussed imo), they will end up in a relationship, which in itself will be a great source of coverage, drama, and possibly controversy for the next 5ish years if not more. The sport celebrity machine would probably play nicely with the pop star machine and net everyone a lot of money, coverage and most importantly, INFLUENCE.

100% its good for both of them (professionally) to be in the spotlight. Remember the days of JT dating Brittney Spears? Same stuff.

For anyone that isn't familiar with G/O Media, they ruined Deadspin. It used to be an amazing site, all the talented writers left, and the VC owners are now trying to use AI to write shitty listicles.

All of the old staff left to form Defector, a reader-supported version of the site which is far superior to the husk of Deadspin.

This is one of the best articles I've ever read. It feels almost like satire and had me chuckling, while still being informative and conveying how ridiculous the media hype is without outright saying it's ridiculous. I think my favorite line is "The following is a real sentence: After the Chiefs won, a Chicago news anchor who is also Walter Payton's son caught video of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift chatting and walking together on their way out of the stadium."

Also, if I'm reading this right, they're not dating at all. They're just interacting for now.

I didn't connect the dots on the staff forming Defector. My only exposure to them is through Normal Gossip, which I unabashedly love despite not being a huge Podcast kinda person (edit: nor, traditionally, a fan of 'gossip', though the podcast has me questioning my definitions).

Really says something about the true value of talent.

What's the point of this article? Just to get an approval for Travis Kelce to date Taylor from someone who's just a sports writer?

Sports, gossip, celebrity etc. writers gotta eat right? Deadspin is kinda the cross section of these things in some cases.

it seems like the heart of this author's point is that...since Taylor Swift has written breakup songs about past relationships, no one should want to date her now or in the future? he sort of...

As for Taylor herself, she’s gone on to write a diss track about pretty much every guy she’s dated. I don’t have the exact numbers because there’s not a Pop Star Reference database, but it’s enough that even the most out-of-touch sports writers are aware it is a thing.

it seems like the heart of this author's point is that...since Taylor Swift has written breakup songs about past relationships, no one should want to date her now or in the future?

he sort of soft-pedals this point with the "And, for that matter, why would anyone date Travis Kelce?" sub-headline, but the article itself only goes into detail on why people would be afraid to date her, and doesn't really talk that much about him.

I hope their relationship (KelSwift? TayTrav?) works out, but if it doesn't...uhh...despite what this guy says, I'd be willing to take one for the team and date Taylor Swift, and risk having a breakup song written about me.

Yeah, the point seems really idiotic. Why would a heterosexual man date one of the richest, most beautiful, most famous women in the world? Uhh… does that question actually need to be answered?

That's honestly pretty disturbing. Like whoever you want, but nobody's music is good enough that I'm going to wear adult diapers if I don't medically need to.

I just assume a lot of celebrity relationships - or even just relationships between wealthy people in general - are based on the same things as pre-1700s marriages.

They are families or individuals seeking to increase their wealth and influence. I would guess many celebs have massive egos and value fame above anything and everything else, including love.

The optics might be the only thing that matter to them in many cases. And I have to imagine there are a lot of "hall passes" given when you have two people with unlimited access to attractive fans, so does it really matter if you're just dating or married when the cameras are on and you don't actually have to tie yourself down too much?

Thinking about it now, I suspect even regular people do this to some degree. Back in the day, it might have been about creating a "perfect family" to bring to church so you could keep the neighbors envious of your wonderful life. I'm sure social media has amplified that a thousand times over. I can't tell you how many people I know who post their incredible relationships all over Instagram. Except I know many of them aren't incredible at all. Recently, one of the most prolific "perfect couple" posters I knew got divorced and it turns out she had cheated multiple times. They both moved on quickly and are both in "perfect" relationships again already.

Is "My ex wrote a song about me and it. Is. A. Bop." not a good enough reason? 😂 (This happened to me btw but it was not quite a bop. I wish it were!)

    Sean Beckwith

And, for that matter, why would anyone date Travis Kelce?

The only thing worse than meeting your heroes is dating them. I can’t speak from experience, but that sounds like a good opening to a piece about the downsides of dating the world’s pop queen.

Travis Kelce is somewhat affable, seems like a total bro, and people still find him attractive even with the molester mustache. Right now, his approval rating is about as high as it’s going to get, and he apparently has parlayed that into a courtship with Taylor Swift.

Pardon me if this piece isn’t teeming with Swift-isms

I have no ill will toward T-Swift because this is 2023, and no one has to listen to any music other than what they like. So, pardon me if this piece isn’t teeming with Swift-isms. I know very few, and what I do know would come off as dad jokes, cliches, or both.

It is immediately clear, from my cursory knowledge of Swift, or really any deified female recording artist, that you don’t cross them. Swifties are so dedicated that they wore Depends to her Eras Tour shows, and if you utter a negative word, it’s like insulting someone’s dead mother.

Kelce seems like a perfect muse for a future Swift breakup ballad

As for Taylor herself, she’s gone on to write a diss track about pretty much every guy she’s dated. I don’t have the exact numbers because there’s not a Pop Star Reference database, but it’s enough that even the most out-of-touch sports writers are aware it is a thing.

Also a thing is the propensity of pro athletes for affairs, cheating, NDAs, and the sort, so this couple seems like a perfect match for the tabloids and Kelce seems like a perfect muse for a future Swift breakup ballad. While I don’t like going to the jock stereotype well, the Chiefs tight end has a catchphrase for Christ’s sake.

How many times do you think he says that daily? Does he scream “You have to fight, for your right, to party” at all public functions? The White House staff appear to be the only people who can stop him from yelling the Beastie Boys hook, and if casual football fans are tired of it, imagine how those who regularly deal with Kelce feel.

Outside of TV royalties, there’s not a lot of incentive

Look, I understand the human instinct to lust after celebrities. Men and women do it, and there’s an obvious status, or validation, that they’re seeking. “Hey, look who I seduced. I truly am a mack,” or “I really am pretty.”

OK. Now, how many celebrity relationships are still intact? The most notable one is Jay-Z and Beyonce, and it didn’t even take a breakup for Hova to get publicly eviscerated by his wife for extracurricular activities. Unless Kelce and Swift have a deal with Max for the next season of The Divorce, outside of TV royalties, there’s not a lot of incentive for the alleged couple to continue dating.

Both parties are far too entitled (and rich)

She just finished touring, he just started the season, and my guess is the fling will take on the feel of a long-distance relationship sooner rather than later. Both parties are far too entitled (and rich) to endure that kind of hardship as even normal people, who don’t have a plethora of eligible candidates, have a tough time staying connected across hundreds of miles.

It takes a serious amount of FaceTime, sexting, and dedication (or private airline miles) to bridge that divide. Call me a hater all you want, yet I’d describe myself as a realist and a romantic, and am simply trying to prepare two people for what’s in store.

But, yes, by all means, Travis Kelce, go down that path and hope the end is amicable enough that you avoid getting skewered by one of the most listened-to artists of this century.
