I feel like something like this could make great use of a 3D printer. Even if printing stuff that you didn’t necessarily model yourself, it could pay itself off and open up a lot of options!

The photo experience on Pixelfed is great, and there are some great apps for it (for iOS at least). I’ve recently gotten into photography more seriously and it’s been nice to have a place to post pictures that isn’t part of Google or Facebook. I think it would be well worth moving over if the use is personal.

There is a lack of users for sure, and I don’t really have anyone following me, but it will grow slowly. Hopefully with quality users that post interesting things rather than people trying to game the system for likes and views.

Definitely more on the jackfruit side than mango, actually. Jackfruit happens to be my favourite fruit now and even that smell is too much for some people.

I don’t get to have durian too often because it’s just so expensive compared to other fruit and it’s not always in season.

Believe it or not I only really had it for the first time about 2 years ago. I was very hesitant because of the hype but what really pushed me over the edge to try, and enjoy, it, was when I opened one myself.

Jackfruit has a very hard shell and the spikes are much sharper than they look - they can easily cut you. So opening one myself was a literal labour of blood and sweat (mostly because I was inexperienced… it’s less dramatic now)… I guess after that I had to eat it and maybe it just rewired my brain “it was so much work we have to think it’s good so that it was worth it”.

All that said I never did get the garbage smell, so I guess that’s just genetics or something. Maybe similar to how some people taste cilantro/coriander as soapy.

I don't believe at all that durian is as gag-inducing or vomit-inducing as many youtube videos lead us to believe. I suspect it is hammed up for views because it is indeed a pungent fruit, and the smell is both recognizable and travels far... I can easily smell a durian stall before I see it while driving on the street. But it doesn't smell like death or feet or anything rotten at all. I'm glad to see that this video somewhat validates this.

Eating it is a bit strange because the texture is very soft, the inside almost like a creme fraiche and the outside is a slightly more solid skin. I think we usually associate super soft fruit with overripe/rotten so this is where the texture issue may come from.

The taste, I think, is somewhere between onion and mango or jackfruit. It can be quite sweet and the oniony note just lingers in the background. But this will depend on the species of durian, of which I think there are a dozen or so.

It's not everyone's cup of tea but it's worth a try at least once if you can find a fresh one!

Linux has been around for decades, and for the last few it’s always always “needed a little more time”. Certain things get easier and the difficulties get smoothed over a bit but it is very slow and it’s probably never going to be at the level where “it’s time”. The best gaming we get (and have ever gotten) in Linux is a wine compatibility layer variant rather than native support and for as long as that is reality we won’t escape the jank and unexpected game issues.

If you want to move from windows best to do it asap so you can start learning the new OS and getting used to its limitations. You will always have to make peace with some loss (or change) in functionality eventually, and you will adapt.

My main driver is the APS-C mirrorless Fujifilm X-T3 and I just picked up an old Nikon F2 35 mm camera.

The X-T3 is just a dream to use. Having physical controls for the main parameters for setting exposure makes it really easy to learn and set up the shots. While I shoot RAW and do post-processing to get the best possible images, I've been having a ton of fun with the film simulations and all the recipes available online. It's added a tricky layer for editing and shooting since some need higher ISO settings to accommodate the dynamic range, but they are quite beautiful.

Fooling with the film sims are what drew me to getting an actual film camera, my Nikon F2. I haven't yet been shooting with it but I'm looking forward to getting it out soon.

The Rebel 500 is what I'm using now. It's big enough that it is a real motorcycle but small enough that it doesn't feel like trying to drive a boat through the sea of traffic. Though the 1100 tempts me since that's what I'm so used to.

Riding here is pretty wild. There are literally millions of scooters in Ho Chi Minh City - many of which driven by folks who haven't learned how to drive - and they outnumber cars by orders of magnitude. Most traffic devices (lights, lanes, lines, sidewalks, etc.) are suggestions... they work fine enough when traffic is light but in heavy traffic times anything goes. You can look up Vietnam traffic on Youtube and it should paint a good picture. It's really dangerous but despite all that I actually prefer to drive here over driving in North America.

I have been riding on the road since 2008. Have owned so far a 2009 Rebel 250x 2001 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100, 1988 Yamaha FJ1200, and finally a 2022 Honda Rebel 500.

All my riding had been done in Canada. Starting off with the 250 was great to get my bearings and learn how to drive in traffic properly. Most of the time it’s not recommended to jump so quick to >1000 cc but I had tried a colleagues motorbike which was the same as I ended getting and it fit so well.

After that I had a bit of a craving to ride something with an 80s vintage which lead me to the FJ1200. A great machine, really fast.

Since then I have moved country and so had to leave them behind. In Vietnam little 125 cc scooters are insanely common and so I downsized my motorcycle to fit in a little better with the traffic dynamics. I do have my eye on some bigger displacements though :)

For anyone thinking of getting into the hobby… think well. Attention to the road and good road sense and awareness is literally a life or death skill. It can be intense and scary but when you’re on an open road the feeling is unmatched. If you are twitchy or anxious you might want to avoid riding. It is expensive. In many parts of the world the riding season is short. Bikes are pricy. Gear is pricy. Get the best helmet you can. If you can’t afford a good helmet you can’t afford to drive.

Here is a sampling of the main channels I look forward to videos from!

Wristwatch Revival: a great watchmaker repair channel. He does really deep and thorough explanations as he fixes up broken watches. As his channel has grown and he became more well known he’s getting access to rarer timepieces.

Pal2tech: photography channel focussing primarily on fujifilm x-series cameras and techniques.

Omar Gonzalez Photography: also photography channel with a focus on fujifilm but a smattering of others, as well as techniques.

Pitch Meeting: comedy channel where a guy played both the part of screenwriter and producer and pitches Hollywood movies to himself in a comedic way - usually highlighting inconsistencies in the movie.

LockpickingLawyer: maybe one of the best lock pickers. Has a massive catalog of videos of picking locks and discussing physical security.

How To Cook That: cooking channel that focusses on misconceptions and scams in other cooking channels and videos. Has a few interesting sub series.

The Crafsman Steadycraftin: a maker channel. He does all sorts of stuff but has a strong interest in figurines and demonstrates a wide range of making skills like molding and casting, 3D printing, painting, etc.. Amazing videography.

Espen Kraft: synthesizer music channel focussing on vintage 80s synthesizers and production techniques.

RedMeansRecording: came for his awesome Op-1 videos, stayed for his brilliance across the board. If you’re into synthesizer music you probably already know this one.

Dirty Blue Tube: all about making watercolour pigments and paints.

Venus Theory: fairly technical but generally approachable music theory deep dives.

Nadav Art and Wood: this guy does wood carving and voiceover storytelling that is just a treat to watch. New channel so not much content but well worth it.

DUST: frequent sci-fi short films. Sometimes starring known actors. Many good ones here.

In fairness I think it’s because these people are looking for the Reddit experience without supporting Reddit the company. Which I think is reasonable and should be encouraged. Over years the experience of the site was cultivated and adapted to its user base and now a largely disconnected and out of touch person is pulling the rug out for reasons irrelevant to the user base and against their best interests.

That said, I agree that it doesn’t mean they should expect to mold other experiences into copies. As we grow and evolve with each other changes will happen naturally anyway as we take the best of some things and leave behind the worst.

On the plus side, Lemmy seems to be aiming for a close Reddit-like experience so hopefully those folks can find their place there.
