I use Tailscale as a VPN to my workstation and run the models on that. Then I use Sillytavern locally on my laptop and just connect it to my workstation endpoint.

I also use TogetherAI and Mancer from time to time.

Secondary to that, I use chatGPT to get myself out of a rut in programming situations as I am in charge of developing a pretty hefty ERP(the business term) essentially by myself. It usually does pretty well after some guidance and correction.

You can usually get it prepared with some kind of additive if you request it. Like I’ve gotten it with some lime and it was pretty solid.

But I’m fortunate enough to like plainish carbonated water on occasion so it’s easier for me. Particularly mineral waters like Topo Chico.

I’m from Alabama. When I was 18 I moved to Denver for a girl and lived there for two years. Not gonna go into detail there, but I found that I naturally suppressed the Southern accent.

It would only come out when I was excited or angry.

I never put effort into changing my accent. I would just sort of “adopt” the accent of the people around me. On the rare occasion I bumped into another southerner, I’d lean back into my natural accent again.

Now when I moved back, people would tell me I had a “neutral” accent and I didn’t sound like I was from somewhere in particular.

Just my experience and I hope it can be helpful to you.

The flood revelation was the most terrifying video game moment I had experienced at that point. So much so, that once I realized the room I was in, I saw the first wave of pod infectors coming out and I turned the game off and wouldn’t play it for months. That fleshy murmur was so unsettling. I only continued when I did co op with a friend who was braver than me.

It is a newer BL460C blade server. Price was $475. So there’s a little bit of a discount there as I’m slotted in with a few other people and there’s a little bit higher risk since they can’t operate without an enclosure. I believe this is a 4 server enclosure. But it doesn’t bother me.

As far as replacement parts, my provider usually keeps some in stock and will swap out for a price and the only major failures I’ve ever had are hard drives. I’ve had a power edge 630 and 730 colo’d with this company as well. Both of which are at my place of employment now enjoying their retirement.

I should mention I lucked out a little on providers and mine is very small. One owner with a few support staff who is very honest and readily available on discord. Kind of has a family vibe. Definitely not typical.

Honestly, this is why I colo. $80 a month and I have a 36 core 72 thread, 512GB RAM behemoth running proxmox that I don’t have to share with anyone.

I don’t think it’s practical for everyone, obviously. But with the pricing and the gimmicks VPS providers use and knowing the margin, I prefer to self host with colocation for a little more.

About the only “big” name I’ve been consistently happy with is hetzner. But only with the caveat that you can support yourself. They don’t have the most responsive support.

Something I haven’t seen here that I may have missed:

Using docker abstracts away the inner workings of applications and their foundations. There are many applications that just say “Oh, use the docker image”.

I am not so easily pleased. I don’t want the app spoon fed to me and when it breaks have no idea what is going on.

Lastly, adding to the point above, working in a troubleshooting field, there are a dwindling number of people who know how to(and this is just a small example with Django):

-Setup a linux environment at all
    -Setup NGINX
-Setup gunicorn to run the app
-Setup a reverse proxy in NGINX
-Setup PostgreSQL with proper grants and credentials
-Troubleshoot any issues that arise during or after this setup.

I’m not trying to pull a “kids these days” but I believe pulling docker images should be a factor of convenience once you have an understanding of the underlying concepts and what it takes to “get there”.

I don’t believe that they are implying the creators shouldn’t be paid for their work. Nor can someone be excluded from protesting something that does not directly affect them.

I think it boils down to just a little disdain for a company that is worth 1.5 trillion dollars, with an annual gross profit of 156 Billion as of YE 2022, being so heavy handed on what probably amounts to less than a quarter of their users.

A lot of people don’t understand the scale of a billion dollars. It looks like this: 1,000,000,000. That’s one thousand millions, a ‘fuᴄk you’ amount of money. Now do that 156 times.

They could leave it like it is, but instead of increasing incentives for creators or content consumers, they go on the offensive.

Google doesn’t do anything but facilitate the flow of information. I have no sympathy for them when everyone else does the work, is the product, and they just sit back and rake in the cash.

At least that’s my take on it.

And I will use YouTube until I am struck out I guess.

I should add, take my opinion piece here with a grain of salt because I am a bitter and grumpy old man who feels there is a point where you make an immoral amount of money.

We have the same experience here. I noticed that Reddit really fed into my doomer personality. I’d be in the best mood and open Reddit(which I would do subconsciously) and shortly after I would begin to become anxious and irritable.

I didn’t make the connection until Reddit pissed me off royally and I moved over to Tildes. Now I just pop on a few times a day and look if there’s anything interesting. But I don’t find myself just opening the site as a compulsion.

I don’t know about you, but I really appreciate how Tildes isn’t suited to endless scrolling.

Awesome. Thank you for putting that in so fast!

Two things that come to mind immediately.

    • taking the input from others, using the feature keeps usernames in the comment text body. So adding some blur to mentions in the may be useful.

    • I use dark mode for everything. So it would be nifty if the background were dark in the image that is generated as well. Right now it uses a white background and it’s a little jarring.

Hope that is helpful feedback and thanks again. :)

    Basically what they said.

As far as privacy goes. There’s only so much that can be done for a public facing forum. The same could be achieved with a screenshot.

All the save as image feature does is clean it up, let you censor or attribute the username, and grab how many ever layers of context you want.

Personally, I mainly used the feature to share long informative posts with my wife without having to send her 3 or 4 screenshots. It was also very handy for making an album of recipes while also capturing suggestions from other users.

Same goes for genre related music recommendations. I would grab the post, and there would always be a nice top level comment with some additional relevant recommendations. Or several in the event of “what are some great underground blah blah blah?” Kinda of posts.

Just made it really easy to format all of that and save it for future reference.

I’ve never felt the need to “customize” my profile page other than a short tagline. I don’t want to see people’s weird profile pics or their signatures for that matter.

Even if we did have signatures, my brain just kind of stopped paying attention to them years and years ago.
