    Served with some ugali, a side of mchicha (kale, tomatoes and onions), perhaps a cooked sweet potato and some chapati and you have a real special East African staple.

    It’s an interesting thought experiment though isn’t it? Even though this is profit motivated, it is REAL. They are actually doing these things. So the question is… if other companies see that this “marketing tactic” works to sell more products, should that not incentivize them to also lean into environmental activism as a method for their capitalism?

    Imagine if companies started to aggressively compete on just how carbon negative they are in order to sell more products?

    I am all for environmental activism in the name of profits, it’s way better than the alternative (ahem Exxon, etc)

    Despite their commercial motivations, the subsidiary output of environmental benefits may just be pretty great, no?

    Based on the report, some of those delays come from them having to switch the engines at various stations (to go from diesel to electric), which would be resolved by the new engines which can do both and don’t need to be switched.

    The trains will also go a bit faster (~125mph vs the current 70-110mph).

    But overall I agree with you. Usually the inhibitor for me is:

    • not enough options for arrival/departure
    • ticket prices are is still too high (at current prices, why not just fly?)
    • time to get there is still too long
    • not enough routes to the right places - you still often have to get a shuttle, etc to make it where you need to go.

    Feeding children is endlessly frustrating. I am a good cook. I cook in the way you describe, and always have. And yet my kids still gravitate towards monochromatic nutrient-devoid foods. I don’t know what it is but if there is color in it, or for some kids if it ISN’T segregated on the plate, they won’t touch it.

    Like I said. Endlessly frustrating. It’s the number one source of tension in my household.

    Yes, unfortunately we’ve built a society where constant growth is necessary to “succeed”. It’s helped to lift many out of poverty and improve life for many, but it has pillaged our environment and created unsustainable habits. Bad habits beget bad habits which reenforce bad habits.

    In my opinion capitalism can work really well on small local scales but once it scales out of that it tends to become incredibly toxic.

    They would have an option. If writers/content creators successfully defend their copyrights in court and successfully “unionize” in a cohesive front against AI tech then tech companies would be required to profit share. That’s the goal I think they should pursue.

    Consumerism is one of the great evils of this world that is socially acceptable.

    I believe that in order for the human race to survive, every single person needs to adapt to more of what I call a “frontier” mindset. Imagine you lived on the frontier (picture the American frontier), how would your expectations around everything shift?

    • You would choose to repair things instead of replace with new
    • While you may have access to supply lines, they would be limited, so you would garden and forage more, and only buy goods when you couldn’t grow, forage or make it yourself.
    • Special events wouldn’t be focused on buying a ton of decorations, but instead would be focused on the experience of celebrating the event or person
    • Because of your reliance on the environment around you (for gardening/etc), you would become more in tune with nature, and thus respect and care for it more as a steward.
    • you would choose products that last, and are made locally, as opposed to shitty products made halfway across the world.
    • you wouldn’t travel as much
    • you would rely heavily on your local community, neighbors, etc.
    • and more!

    Now apply that mindset to the current modern “Western” lifestyle. We can in fact keep modern amenities like air conditioning, phones, etc and make this work.

    Imagine if everyone changed their mindset to this at a very basic level - even if it wasn’t a full on hippy dippy adoption of this approach by each person, the systems that currently exist would be reshaped into much more sustainable and positive systems.

    Is this possible? I actually think so.

    Is it likely? I actually also think that it inevitably is. But I don’t think it will be by choice.

    I don’t think the majority of people will give up their dopamine driven habits by choice. I personally think that the deepening climate crisis, constricting food supplies, forced migrations, energy issues, etc are going to be the things that incrementally force more and more people closer to this “frontier” way of life over the next few centuries.

    Content producers like Disney are using the tools, sure, but it’s AI companies who are raking in the profits.

    Microsoft just posted an absolutely massive gain in stock price this last quarter. Strike them. Join arms with all other studios and demand royalties on the content they are scraping. Microsoft knows they will profit from AI - and would likely be willing to cut out some profits for the writers. Get in on that early. Protesting Disney executive pay is, in my opinion, going after the small fries.

    Even though striking the production companies is a just cause, a more effective and lucrative path in my opinion would be to take on the AI creators themselves and demand a share of the profits.

    Okay I’m OP. I don’t agree with your take.

    Let me expound. I’m really optimistic that the team will improve dramatically by learning from Messi. They showed growth even in their short time on the pitch with him. I think he will propel this team to some key wins this year and improve the program long term too.

    Even in spite of that, Messi is entering the sunset of his career. He’s done all the things already. He could’ve joined another exceptional team and played until he retired, sure - but he’s already done that. He saw an opportunity to transform and shape a league, much like Beckham did when he stepped into MLS. Seems like a great opportunity to build his legacy to me.

    He is inspiring so many people just by showing up and playing. Just anecdotally, so many people who couldn’t care less about soccer have been talking to me about his transfer and games. My kids are enamored with him even more now that he’s stateside. They ball outside and all want to be “Messi”.

    Personally, I think him coming to this league is anything but “sad”.

    Outside of that - Messi and Sergio were head and shoulders better than the rest of the team and the skill gap was painfully obvious throughout the game. Many plays set up by the new recruits that the team failed to execute on, or many chances to leverage good positioning by Messi where they chose poor alternatives. The rest of the squad is going to have to drastically improve in order to take advantage of and maximize Messi’s talents on the field.

    • it’s investing heavily in manufacturing capabilities, and the US is also providing capital to them to that end.
    • they aren’t a geopolitical adversary to us
    • time zones are much more conducive to collaboration
    • language and cultural barriers are less prohibitive
    • pricing is highly competitive
    • labor is low cost
    • and more!

    Mexico would be a great manufacturing partner to the United States and I only foresee growth for them in this category from here on out!
