I was discussing something like this with a friend who lives a few hours away recently. Both of us are at a point in life where most of our social interactions are online and we're craving more in-person community.
One of the things that is giving us pause is the idea that we may need to adapt to "fit in" with whatever communities we try to join. As people who spent a large part of their formative years trying to "fit in" before we found "our people" and became more comfortable being ourselves, the idea of doing it again in adulthood is somewhat off-putting.
The main concern I have is that attempting to adapt to a community might mean accepting or ignoring behaviour that I don't want to be part of. We're both into "nerd-shit", and while the broader sub-culture is largely progressive and welcoming these days, it's impossible to deny the rampant misogyny and other problems within the space.
Intellectually I know that if I visit a community and see something I don't like I can easily just look elsewhere, but the idea of looking for a place and not finding one is upsetting enough that it feels easier at times to stick with the uncomfortable-but-known.

I am continually trying to chip away at the game I'm developing, currently tackling some writing and working on the functional parts to trigger game events/updates during dialogue.
Unfortunately I've been running into some frustrating crashing issues with godot that I think are related to wayland / my desktop environment which have meant that my recent attempts to get anything done have been mostly troubleshooting rather than development.

The game itself is a sidescrolling platformer / cozy game where you play as a cat who delivers mail to other animals around the city. I've got a lot of the foundational stuff in place, but writing has proven a bit of a blocker. I'd like to think I'm a decent writer, but it's also not something I've done much of, and I've always struggled with dialogue. The nature of the game means that essentially all the writing is dialogue, and it's been triggering all of my worst procrastination / avoidance tendencies, which creates a sort of feedback loop where I ultimately make very little progress, even on the non-writing aspects of the game.

My intent is to take a full month or so off work at the end of this year / start of next year that I can dedicate to "full time" development, but hopefully I will be able to make some progress before then.

This stood out to me from early in the book when Dr Breed bring up George Minor Moakley:

    "Think of it!", said Breed.
"Twenty-six people he had on his conscience!"

The horror he seems to feel at the idea of killing so many, while being dismissive of the results of using something like the atomic bomb as being beyond the responsibility of those that developed stands out to me, and I think generally reflects the books thoughts about that mindset.

The pacing is interesting, the short chapters make it feel like I'm racing through the story despite not very much actually happening so far.

I'm reserving judgement until I've read more, but I like it more than Slaughterhouse 5, which is the only other Vonnegut I've read.
I don't remember much of Slaughterhouse 5 beyond thinking at the time that it was severely overrated.

If your IDE doesn't have built in support, you could use something like Dev Pod that is IDE agnostic (though I've not really used it myself)

I remember it extra fondly as I watched it mostly from a hospital bed while recovering from a minor surgery, it was great to have something long form to focus on.

Spoiler from the final episode The scene between Asmodeus and Zerxus is one of my all time favorite actual play scenes.

Oh absolutely, and I didn't intend my comment to be any kind of rebuttal, just a general vent!

So much stuff happening with AI at my workplace seems entirely against nearly every security policy I'm aware of, and it boggles my mind. I suspect the same is true in every company that is "embracing" AI, and I'm bracing myself for a day in what I expect to be the not too distant future where something that was heavily developed using AI causes a major security incident.

Not that 100% human developed software doesn't have plenty of security flaws, but the enthusiasm to do things with AI seems to be overriding all the policies that have been put in place to prevent insecure or buggy code from hitting production.

My workplace has recently started rolling out Github Copilot, and the things it will try to do are wild at times.
A couple of examples that I encountered in the first afternoon of "training":

    • It's supposed to ignore any files listed in .gitignore, in my setup a .env file containing (fake) secrets. When it determined it needed access to a value from the file it wasn't allowed to read, it helpfully offered to remove the entries from .gitignore so it was able to read them. If it was running in agentic mode, it would likely have resulted in a local secrets file being committed to the repository (and sent into the LLM itself).
      • I was also told that it would sometimes access the files listed in .gitignore despite apparently not being able to, though I wasn't able to get it to do so with some basic attempts
    • When I asked it to write unit tests for the code it had generated, it re-implemented the function in the test file and tested that, rather than testing the actual implementation
      • Not an issue with copilot exactly, but there were multiple people on the "training" that proudly showed the fruits of their labor: Failing test suites. These people are all apparently working as developers for my company across various departments, and none seemed to notice that the wall of red might indicate a problem with the generated code.

The "training" itself was 2 afternoon sessions of someone showing some advertising material and walking through a publicly available Copilot example with no assessment or requirement to do anything other than attend to get given a license.
I've lightly used it since, and it can be helpful when starting a new project, or when trying to use a new module for the first time, but it's often less useful than an LSP.

I spent quite a bit of time transplanting my NAS from a SilverStone DS380 case into a 10-inch rack mount.
The primary reason for doing so was that the silverstone case has very poor ventilation for the drives which were reaching temps of 50 degrees celsius at times (even though only half the bays were filled!), but also because I've become a little enamored with mini racks and have been migrating my homelab across.

So far everything looks like it went well, the drive temperatures are much improved (down to mid-high 30s), and the various 3d printed parts have worked wonderfully - hotswap drive bays, an SFX PSU mount and a cover for the motherboard.

One wrinkle was that I had thought the motherboard in my NAS had a power button on the rear io panel which turned out to be incorrect, so I had to detach the front panel of the NAS case and rest it on top until I can get hold of some buttons.

Now that this particular itch is scratched, I hope to resume working on my game.

I don't play league anymore, but still watch most C9 games (either live or VODs), and pay attention to MSI / Worlds.
Fearless has been a great change I think, especially in Bo5s that go the distance. Usually by this stage in an international tournament the meta has become a lot more "solved", and you'd often see the same matchup multiple times per series which became pretty tiresome, especially during certain periods where there were overly dominant picks with close to 100% pick/ban presence.

I don't follow LCK too closely, but IIRC they were switching between Gumayusi and another ADC (Smash?) fairly regularly which seemed to be causing some issues with training. There was lots of drama in the fanbase about management overruling coaches from memory.
I think it also might've taken Doran some time to gel with the team.

T1 at internationals is always a contender, though I think it's been a pretty long time since they beat GenG in a series at this point?

I made the switch to Helix and found it a bit easier to get into, some of the changes to vim syntax make a bit more sense to me, primarily switching the verb and noun in a lot of the actions (eg: wc for "select the next word, then change the selection" in Helix rather than cw in vim)

Is a software solution viable? Moonlight is presented as game streaming software, but ultimately it's just a screen share (there are plenty of other software choices too). If one of the machines is behind a VPN/proxy it would make things difficult though.
