Try OctoML’s hosted API running the Mixtral model. I’ve found it to be highly reliable and of similar quality to GPT-4 at a tiny fraction of the cost. The API is the same structure as the GPT-4 API so it makes it a drop in replacement.

It costs $0.0003 per 1k tokens for input and $0.0005 per 1k tokens for output.

I largely agree with your assessment. This story is as old as time. New ways of expressing oneself come along, and people used to expressing themselves in the old way prefer what they’re comfortable with.

The more I think about it, though, the more I wonder if the quality of self expression is lower in new mediums. Not because the new medium is inferior, but because people are still experimenting with how to best self express using the new medium. More effort goes into creating a 1 minute ticktock than one might think, especially ones that propagate successfully and gain momentum. But the expressive content in a 1 minute is lower than if someone who has participated in forums for two decades spent the same amount of time creating a topic and participating in the ensuing discussion. This doesn’t degrade the new medium, it means that people are spending the effort learning how to self-express.

Of course, this argument would suggest that self-expression in places like Facebook today should be about where forums were back in the early 2010s. Maybe that’s true, but if it is I certainly haven’t experienced it myself.

Either way, I do think that people underestimate how much effort it takes to forge new paths, even if that new path is just expressing one’s self using a new medium. To those who say things like Tiktok are low quality, I say give it time. YouTube’s quality has certainly gone up (at least the explainer scene) in the last decade as people learned how to use it. Give Tiktok users and those of other new platforms the same opportunity to build an understanding of what works and what doesn’t - quality content will follow.

Another great one in Vancouver BC is “Long’s Noodle House” on Main near 33rd. It’s a little spot that makes Chinese noodles and Xiao Long Bao fresh in front of you. The soup in the dumplings is super tasty, and the general vibe in the place is super great. Very “mom and pop” (at least it was last time I was there in 2018).

I think about that place regularly now that I’ve moved away.

Assuming an average of 2 hrs per movie, that's 1,000 consecutive, full 24 hour days of film. You're right, it would shatter them.

    Thanks for your thoughts, Deimos.

More controversial discussions or ones that attract many quick responses get treated as "better", when they're usually not.

A way to address this would be to sort by average comment depth. For example, if a comment had 50 direct replies, and none of those 50 replies had any further discussion, would then have a score of 1. However, a comment with a single reply, but the replies go back and forth 10 times, then the parent comment would have a score of 10. Using the comment depth to sort comments would result in the most heavily discussed comments being at the top.

Of course, you're right that there is no best way to sort comments. In the end, all sorting methods can be gamed, and are all biased in some way. It's not that I dislike the way things are currently done, just that I want to share my 2 cents. :)

Excellent description of the problem. Much more eloquent than my attempt.

I've been thinking about this issue on and off for a while, and another solution I came up with was to sort by the number of replies. That way, the most discussion-prompting comments are at the top. If we wanted to go further, we could sort by the maximum depth of replies to a comment. A large depth would mean that a back-and-forth discussion has taken place. Perhaps again with some shuffling to promote new posts, since they still suffer from the "early poster get ahead" problem.

I'd love to get @Deimos to share his thoughts here. Do you feel the Vote button is working as intended so far? What potential downsides would there be to sorting by number of replies.
