That said I'm still rocking a first-gen paperwhite I jailbroke over 12 years ago. It's been on airplane mode almost its entire life except a few occasions I've needed to use its terrible web browser in an emergency. In that time I've used it as a ssh client, a vnc client (connected to a VM running android so the thing acted like a cursed android tablet), I've played sudoku, chess, etc on it, installed custom fonts and other ebook reader software on it, etc.

It's never updated or bricked itself in all that time. Shout out to mobileread forums where I got all the info to mod it.

Pocketbook is even easier imho and I like their devices. I know they're less popular but it's worth a look.

Kobo still forces one time internet activation(or at least did on Libra 2) but at least the email does not need to be confirmed. Otherwise yes, it's less restrictive.

Got a guide from this video: https://youtu.be/Qtk7ERwlIAk With the talk about being unable to backup books, we might as well start looking into taking back the hardware as well.

Was very disappointed with the followup video on his Patreon about backing up the books. It was made to sound like it was something new with the jailbroken device, but it turns out it's the same method that has been around forever utilizing Calibre and some plugins. This method does not work with modern kindle .kfx files which is now the default and becoming increasingly widespread.

I certainly hope you were already a subscriber and weren't misled into spending money for a guide on removing DRM from books. Simply put, anyone charging money for such a thing is scamming you. The software and information required to do so (for most major platforms) are freely available.

This is somewhat true depending on how you meant it, but if you mean it won't work with .kfx files at all have a look at KFX Input and Dealing with Kindle ebooks in calibre. Alternatively, I commented another recently working method in a previous thread.

There is a way to change the format on modern .kfx files. The method is quite a bit more roundabout than with older Kindle formats, so I would generally recommend against buying eBooks in that format. But you're not out of luck if you do, so long as you have access to the Amazon account where the books were purchased and a Windows PC (I can't personally vouch for other operating systems).

I’ve been hearing a lot about kindle jailbreaking lately. It seems like a great way to take advantage of the great kindle hardware.

Have jailbroken my old kindle, 10/10 do reccomend. It's a great SSH client. I want to make a Home Assistant dashboard when I have more time, as it needs to be very lightweight webpages.

In a reply to another comment I mentioned the mobileread forums, which are an incredible resource for kindle modding and jailbreaking. That sent me down a nostalgia rabbit hole. In addition to using my kindle as a VNC client to connect to an android VM, turning the thing into a cursed android tablet, I remembered I actually wrote a frontend for the VNC client that prompted you for a username and password.

With such limited options that were available I drew a text UI using some sort of ncurses plugin for ZSH, which ended up implementing touch support, full cursor support, etc. I'm kinda proud how it works despite how incredibly janky it is. Also I named all my variables "poop" because I'm an adult and that's my choice.

Mileage may vary with this jailbreak. I tried it a few days ago and got an error page when I tried to access the store to finish the process. I followed their troubleshooting steps, which involve completely factory resetting my kindle, and tried again and got the same result. A few people have submitted Github issues with similar messages.

I'm not saying that these steps don't work, I doubt they would have published them if that was the case, but there's likely to be roadblocks that pop up when following processes like this one. They did their best to make these steps as painless as possible, but it's a constant battle to beat companies like Amazon.

The mobileRead forums are really good but the structure is terrible -- a wiki like this would be really nice for the scene.
