Folding at Home: Team Tildes information
Inspired by @moocow1452 original post on donating computer resources towards the cause of researching coronavirus. This new post is to organize the Folding @ Home information to be at the top of the thread for new users who may be interested in donating their resources to the cause.
- Folding @ home: Coronavirus - What we're doing and how you can help in simple terms
- Folding @ Home Download here
- Tildes Team number: 238330
- Folding@Home Passkey registration
- Folding@Home Points information
- Folding@Home Team stats
- Extreme Overclocking team stats details
- Folding@home Active Projects - Where you can look up what your Work Unit is related to
- Folding@home Server Stats - Server Status, Assignment/hour
- Folding@home Client Stats - OS, CPU and TFLOPS count totals
Copying over a few relevant things from the old topic:
Their servers are currently being a bit overwhelmed, so
the stats page is pretty broken right now(edit: stats page appears to finally be fixed), as are their Work Unit assignment servers. So if you get stuck on "Downloading" in your Work Queue, just idle and un-idle the associated Folding Slot a few times until it connects and gets a new Work Unit. Also worth mentioning is something @SleepyGary recently pointed out:
Thanks for the links, I've added them to the main post so that they can all be easy to access.
Phew I used to run a radiator to warm up my office but three PCs running Folding is doing the job.
PCs are almost 100% efficient at turning electricity into heat, so it's no worse from a cost perspective, either!
If they use electric heating. If they use gas or other heating, it may be less cost efficient.
Generally I use electricity to heat an oil based radiator for just my office and turn down the gas based central heating to about 15.5C for the rest of the house. But since my wife and kid are home during the day right now it's set to 19C all the time. Normally wouldn't run the radiator at that temp, I'll probably have to turn off Folding come summer as I don't have central AC.
I've been folding for a while (mostly overnight) but joined the team just now.
Something I've found very fun to notice is that in June 2019, Folding had a total capacity of about 98.747 PetaFLOPS.
Thing is, if I turn on my RTX2080, that number changes to 98.757. That's a pretty significant change in my book. Right now the number probably is a multitude of that, but I felt like pointing it out.
For the record: make sure your overclocks are 110% stable, else you'll get errors and can't finish your WU. Turn them off if you want to be sure.

Nice. Looks like they've also solved whatever issues the stats pages were having, I can consistently get something now.
Agreed...earlier in the day I checked multiple times and couldn't get the stats to load. It's nice to see them working again, I know they've had a lot to deal with lately.
Sadly, I think all they did was implement some static caching on the stat page... because even though you can now view the stats without getting a Bad Gateway or Gateway Timeout, the stats it shows aren't up to date and haven't actually been updated in almost 24 hours now. :(
Edit: Even the direct API query results are way behind now, it seems:

Has anyone else gotten a passkey recently? Wondering if I should try again!
I would try again if it were me. I haven't gone through the process to get a passkey in a very long time so I can't speak to what is happening right now.
In the F@H AMA about 11 hours ago there was this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/flgm7q/ama_with_the_team_behind_foldinghome_coronavirus/fkzfme4?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x
Just got one, thanks!
Prepare for some serious points to start racking up over here :)
Nice! Can't wait to see your PPD. What are you folding with?
I've got a 16-core Threadripper 1950X, which is a beast, especially with the 4 memory channels :)
I've been chronicling my attempts to get the Radeon VII working as well, finally got F@H to recognize it, but GROMACS is exiting w/ a fault. Probably they're using clFFT for the PME solve :/
The 10 Gb connection in Austin seems to have helped me pull down WU's at a good rate as well (looks like I have the most complete on the team!)
My only regret -- I didn't splurge for one of the 32-core 2nd gen 'rippers that I have at work :P
Oh right, I remember now. You'll be adding some serious points to the leader board very soon. Speaking of, I can load the team stats page consistently now but it isn't updating. I'm guessing they're working on stuff behind the scenes.
Right now it's estimating 219601 PPD :)
Very nice. I hope you get enough work units to keep up that pace. If/when you start overtaking my PPD I might have to bring more GPUs online. ;-)
With a passkey, you'll probably see a zero added to the end of that number :)
I got my passkey when I started my user for this team, took about 10 minutes for the email to come through.
Since we're floating around the top 3000 groups and we're still probably one of the quickest growing groups by WU, I'm wondering if people are going to start finding the website through this project or if it's a lot of people making a lot of noise and we're just especially loud.
I doubt many people are paying that close of attention to the stats (esp since they are still kinda borked)... but if some people do happen to discover Tildes via F@H that would be pretty neat. :)
p.s. Though speaking of... when you click the homepage link on the tildes team stats page it currently goes to https://stats.foldingathome.org/tildes.net instead of https://tildes.net. A bunch of other team homepage links work just fine though, (e.g.)... but I think you need to actually include the https:// part in order for it to work properly. So is there any chance you could fix that, @minimaltyp0s?
Huh, yeah weird. It looks like we're back to Bad Gateway and Gateway Timeouts again. Whatever caching they did yesterday they seem to have rolled back now. Thanks for trying to fix the homepage link though. If I ever manage to connect to the stats page I will let you know if it worked. :P
edit: It's working now, thanks!
I would also say that from prior experience with my former F@H team, we had a considerably high rank and PPD production for such a small team and it did not drive traffic in to the website.
Configured Tildes group, but F@H seems to be having a lot of issues distributing WUs right now, so my GPU is idling.
Yea it took about an hour for one of my GPUs to get work, my other computer got one right away.
I have had decent luck getting new Work Units by idling then un-idling my GPU Folding slot. Whereas if I just leave it to automatically reconnect it seems to continuously fail for me.
This is rad. I started folding again because I saw it on twitter, but I just pointed my team at the tildes team. Glad to be working with a closer community :P
Welcome aboard! The more the better! :)

The AMA is up.
Some of the interesting highlights IMO:
Awesome! Also, cc @arghdos:
Some people in that thread are saying that if you are having an issue getting Work Units, it helps to disconnect and reconnect because they are doled out by server. Connecting to a different server can help. To do so, hit pause for 20+ seconds, and then hit Fold again.
I've tried the pause/unpause with a limited degree of success. After toying with it for a while I just need to leave it be and wait for the folding team to fix their resource issues.
Does anyone here have any experience with CUDA under Linux causing their CPU to have 100% usage?
I have both my current AMD card and my old Nvidia card installed, and F@H keeps my CPU at a 100% even though the GPU is getting used (checked from
nvidia-smi
)Other CUDA tools like Blender also seem to do this, so I don't think it's F@H's fault.
My AMD card with OpenCL don't use much CPU (after the initial compile), so I have no idea what's going on. Maybe the drivers are conflicting somehow?
A couple thoughts:
see also
apt install ocl-icd-dev
).With that said, I've yet to see my Radeon VII pick up any work. When I launch F@H, my log says:
and I get a bunch of errors like this:
when trying to get work units. If anyone's figured out how to get AMD cards working better, I'd love to hear it.
You might also check the forums
I get that exact same series of errors repeatedly (as well as "WorkServer connection failed on port 8080 trying 80") even with my 980Ti, but if I idle then un-idle my GPU Folding Slot a few times until it finally connects properly to the assignment server, it usually manages to send me a Work Unit. So that issue may have more to do with their assignment servers being overloaded than anything AMD/OpenCL specific.
I partially figured out my OpenCL issue. AMD GPUs on linux require membership in the
video
group in order to run compute on the ROCm stack.First, I configured a local instance of F@H:
Then I edited config.xml, to manually add GPU/OpenCL slot, e.g:
Finally, I ran as a regular user (which I know clinfo works under):
and boom, OpenCL support on Linux for AMD.
Of course, it failed the first work-package it got:
but, progress!
Still no idea why the service can't get OpenCL access -- I tried adding the
fahcontrol
user to the video group, but no dice. Probably something in how the service is started?Awesome job, and progress indeed. Out of curiosity, have you tried to get in touch with the F@H devs directly at all to see if they could help you out (or you could help them out, as the case may be)?
Definitely my next step -- or, right after seeing if I can LD_PRELOAD a local GROMACS build I know will work on my card :p
Gotcha, I'm still seeing clGetDeviceIDs errors though:
which is silly, because if I test in shell, clinfo returns my Radeon VII just fine :P
Woah, team rank 2706. That's pretty far up!
Almost 13 million points, 882 WUs, nice!
Make something competitive and suddenly everyone cares about something like this ;)

Going to contribute my 2070S, now that I'm finally able to get some WU's
Glad to have another GPU added to the team!
You should get yourself a passkey... it'll seriously increase your points. My 980Ti is almost quadrupling your PPD with one.
Didn't know passkey affects the points, just requested one, thanks!
Stats were down for maintenance a bit ago, but they're back now and seem to be updating properly again.
We're at #2644 as of a few min ago, so still climbing! Screenshot:

p.s. The homepage link for the team is finally working now too. Thanks for fixing that, @minimaltyp0s.
Almost at 2000 now!
https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=238330
We are cranking out the work!
We finally cracked the 2000 barrier!!! š„³š
https://stats.foldingathome.org/team/238330
Are team stats broken? I haven't been able to get Folding@home's page working, and the alternate page is reading 0's across the board no matter what time period I select.
Yeah, their stats page is broken at the moment. It took me like 100+ attempts to get past the "Bad Gateway/Gateway Timeout" last time I tried 11 hours ago. I grabbed a screenshot though:

FYI, you can also view the stats here: https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=238330
According to that, we're the 4th fastest rising team over the past 24h!

Yeah I've been running my calcs all day :P
We're at 451 WUs now, think that was ~350 yesterday around the same time. Pretty neat.
I was able to snag a new team stats from a few minutes ago:

Goddamn, 1.5M credits. Nice job! You're putting all of us to shame. ;)
It's a team effort! I was lucky enough to time and fund my new PC build in late December 2019. My work is done from a company MacBook so I can leave my personal PC running F@H without it interrupting my work.
For sure. I was just joking around (in a fit of jealousy at your rig ;) ... and the last thing I would want do is discourage anyone from doing their damnedest to help out right now. :)
FYI, your score increases dramatically from bonus points, only available if you have a passkey. Having a passkey automatically makes you get more points anyway.
Just re-configured mine to reflect my tildes name and the tildes team. Let's do this!
In other news, we be creeping into the top 1500 groups, Foldi@Home has million active installs, (https://twitter.com/drGregBowman/status/1244709094273007621?s=20) and broke the Exaflop processing barrier last week.
