What's your current or upcoming project?

For any sort of art in general. What are you excited about creating?

For me, I'm a photographer, and I've got some plans for some large format shooting during my camping trip. Because my trip lines up nicely with a nearly new moon, and I'm going to be in an area with nearly no light pollution, I want to try capturing the Milky Way on slide (color positive) film, and also doing a shot of some star trails behind a lighthouse in that area, or star trails reflecting off the lake.

In addition to working on this week's photo challenge, I'm about to start making a large, wall-mounted sundial out of copper. I've never made anything on quite this scale before, it's quite exciting. I need to figure out a method for etching the design I want (the tricky bit is getting the etch mask on).

Would love to see your photos when they're done. I've never shot anything bigger than medium format myself but I've always wanted to try.

How exactly does a wall-mounted sundial work, unless I'm thinking about it the wrong way, and it's not mounted vertically?

As for my photos, here's a recent one, from when I accidentally loaded my 4x5 film backwards and did a 2 minute long exposure. That mistake sold my first 2 prints!

It is mounted vertically. I found this nifty site which generates a template using Google Maps and some clever maths. Nice photo!

Oh I get it now! For some reason I thought it would be shaped like a normal sundial (round) and obviously that doesn't work. That's a really neat idea.

Currently, I'm writing a movie from the ground up. I'm composing an original soundtrack, using friends I've made along the way for the composition, I'm writing the script, and directing everything myself. Every night I go to sleep thinking about more and more to add to make this my perfect creation. I plan on entering it in a film festival as soon as final touches are added and I'm satisfied with the end result. This is two years in the making and I'm more than excited to finish it.

I am working on a 3d scanner. I bought a prusa 3d printer kit from ebay for about $50. Attached an Adafruit time of flight distance sensor to it (another $15). The 3d printer comes with an oversized Arduino board (ramps 1.4). So I have programmed the board to scan back and forth in an xy rectangle, while recording z data from the distance sensor. The plan is to start with a lump of clay, make what you want, then run the scanner over it, then turn that into Unity3d object.

That's awesome! I kind of want a 3D printer though I don't think I'd end up using it enough to justify the cost. However, my local library has one, so I think I'll try to come up with an idea for some printing and head over there at some point soon. A 3D scanner would be super useful, and I did just watch a video recently about a very expensive scanner that can even generate textures. Unfortunately I can't find the video at the moment.

Thank you. What drives you when you go on your photography trips? Do you have a particular image you want to capture, or do you lean more to 'happy accidents'?

Usually I spend the first day wandering around after setting up, just with a point and shoot, looking for what's worth coming back to with the full kit. Sometimes I'll see a picture online of a place and decide to head out there.

I have two projects in mind for this: Terrain tiles, where you make a landscape out of clay on a 6" x 6" tile.
Once digitized, you can place them where you like. I have an artist brother who wants to build his own 3d race tracks but does not want to deal with 3d cad programs. This would work for him.

The second is for an animation project. This would do character body fronts and backs, then glue them together in unity.

I use the same 3d printer carcass for laser engraving. Am building a rotating mechanism to mark coffee cups. Could use it for the distance sensor. But this is testing the limits of my laziness.

I don’t know if it count as art (some enthusiasts probably think it does), but I’m building an ergonomic split mechanical keyboard.

Current state of affairs looks like this, but it’s a very deceiving shot, as the switches don’t all stick in place yet and there is no wiring or other guts in it yet.

…and won’t be, as I realised that I don’t like that thumb cluster in a Dactyl and am going for a Dactyl ManuForm cross-over.

I haven’t decided on how many keys I want, so this decision will probably go hand-in-hand with the other longer-term project I have – to create my own custom ergonomic layout, based on Neo.

    So next steps:

    1. decide which – and therefore how many – keys I need
    2. 3D print appropriate model – I’m thinking of a white-navy stripped look to match the keys
    3. assemble
    4. test a dry-run
    5. if it is comfy, wire and assemble the guts

I've only dabbled in the mechanical keyboard world. Mainly because I've owned Model M's since before it was cool, and I've passively lurked the community from the beginning. It's gotten way out of my price range as a hobby, but I'm super happy as a side-effect of its popularity, you can now buy keyboards with cherry MX blues at BestBuy. In my day I was really happy to buy used Model M's at flea markets and garage sales, since there was nothing but rubber domes on the market for a decade or more.

Model M and F are awesome. I had the pleasure to use them in our hackerspace/computer museum :)

For the build I’m going for Kailh BOX Jade switches, as these are the best-feeling MX-type for my taste, but my daily driver is Matias Quiet Pro with their own dampened tactile Alps-clones. IMHO Alps is leagues ahead of Cherry MX, but didn’t want to deal with modifying the print and having to find Alps keycaps.

I already (borrowed and) tried an ErgoDox (kits now aplenty) and a Kinesis Advantage, so the Dactly was a logical next step.

As for the layout, I’m currently using vanilla Neo2, but there are some characters that I’m lacking on the primary layer, so I would need to change it anyway. That will give me an excuse to re-generate it using n-grams of the languages that I frequently type and scripts that the Neo community made. Switching to an ergonomic layout (and therefore proper touch typing) was a much bigger improvement than getting a better sculptured keyboard. It reduces the stress by reducing the amount of travel your fingers (and wrists) have to do.

Magical Girl Webcomic, about an absolute trashfire of a girl who gets into a Magical School with dubious means, accompanied by her dead brother that she thinks she reanimated into a stuffed animal. After picking a fight with another student, (who is convinced that they are now best friends) and being put on probation by the student body president, she takes revenge by taking the president's younger sister under her wing and training her for the schools entrance tourney under the president's nose and against her wishes. Complicating things even further is that our hero's protege may be the reincarnation of someone who could radically change the world, and it's very uncomfortably timed for the people in charge.

It's kinda like a Magical Girl version of Archer, or My Hero Academia if saving the world past high school was already considered over the hill.

I've been meaning to embroider a circular phylogenetic tree to put on my graduation cap. But first I'm doing a much smaller piece as test, a little maze. I'm using black fabric so I bought some sticky, dissolvable stabilizer that I can print the design on, and since I've never used it before I want to make sure it works well before I spend ages embroidering my phylogenetic tree. I've also run into a bit of a snag where I've realized my tree isn't as accurate as I'd like, so I'm trying to find a different design...

I'm jealous of your camping trip! I don't have the photography skills to capture the stars, but one of my few bucket list items is to go to a dark sky park and see the milky way.

Other people have mentioned it reminded them of Bastion, it's so flattering! Maybe it has to do with the way I'm making the game. Bastion was built using MonoGame too. Also the art style is hand painted so there's a lot of little details.

I developed an item tracker for the game Warframe about a year or so ago. It was just a simple static web-app that stored the user's data in their browser storage. We have about 25-50 daily active users with peaks of up to 200 when a big update comes out. I have updated the tracker to add new items as the game has updated but over the next month I am going to try and rebuild the entire thing to store all the user lists on an AWS DyanmoDB with an API through Lambda. It's a huge undertaking for me since I have basically never used the AWS ecosystem before but will hopefully be a good learning experience.
