Timasomo FAQ
What is Timasomo?
Timasomo is "Tildes' Make Something Month": a creative community challenge that takes place in the month of November. It was inspired by NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month. This is Timasomo’s third year running!
You can see the threads for previous Timasomos using the timasomo tag. Here are the final showcase threads from past years featuring participants' creative works:
Timasomo 2020 Showcase
Timasomo 2019 Showcase
What are the rules?
Timasomo is self-driven and its goals are self-selected. On November 1st, participants will commit to a creative project (or projects) that they plan to complete within the month of November. There is no restriction on the methods/products of creativity: writing, painting, code, food, photos, crafts, songs -- if it's creative expression for you, it works for Timasomo!
Though most will be participating individually, collaborations are welcome too!
What is the schedule?
Timasomo begins November 1st and ends November 30th. All creative output towards your goal(s) should be confined to this time. This week prior to the start of November is for planning, and there will be a few days at the beginning of December given to "finishing touches" before we have our final thread, which will be a showcase of all the completed works. Below are the dates that I will be posting weekly threads:
Monday, October 25, 2021: Announcement/Planning Thread
Monday, November 1, 2021: Roll Call Thread
Monday, November 8, 2021: Update Thread #1
Monday, November 15, 2021: Update Thread #2
Monday, November 22, 2021: Update Thread #3
Monday, November 29, 2021: Final Update Thread
Monday, December 6, 2021: Timasomo Showcase Thread
Can I participate?
Yes! Timasomo is open to anyone on Tildes! The greater Tildes community is also encouraged to participate in discussion threads even if you are not actively working towards a creative goal. This is meant to be an inclusive community event -- all are welcome! If you are interested in participating but do not have a Tildes login, please e-mail the invite request address here for an invite to the community.
This announcement is posted in ~tildes.
All Timasomo process threads will be hosted in ~creative.
The final Timasomo Showcase thread will be posted in ~talk.
If you wish to participate or follow the proceedings, please make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.
If you wish to view the showcase, please make sure you are subscribed to ~talk.
Do I have to share my creation(s) publicly?
Tildes is a privacy-respecting site, and you are not obligated to share your creation here if you do not want to. We'd still love to hear about it though, if you're willing to share process and details!
How do I enter?
Participants will formally announce their plans to enter into Timasomo on November 1st in the Roll Call thread posted in ~creative.
What if I have ideas for how to run the event?
Please share them here! I am facilitating the event, but I am completely open to feedback and suggestions to make this the best event possible. I want this to be Tildes' event, not kfwyre's!
This week's blog post is closing the door that last week's blog post opened up:
After this, I'm hoping to move on to tackling the issue of grades that @cfabbro pinged me on (thanks again!). I've started writing the beginning, which will likely end up being the first of a THREE part series (though this is still tentative and might change). I've outlined a bunch of what I want to talk about, but it won't necessarily coalesce until I really get into the depths of writing.
If I can play my cards right, I'm hoping to have a deep dive into grading that does justice to it from lots of different perspectives and speaks to the latent tensions embedded into it as a framework. I know that sounds kind of stuffy, but I promise I'll try to make it as interesting and frankly honest as possible!
Adding another piece to the pile of evidence that I'm a huge nerd, this sounds extremely interesting and I look forward to reading it!
I probably won’t be making any more updates this month - I am having issues with the electronics on my printer and am dealing with some personal stuff. I’ll update after this event with the results once I get around to finishing the gloves.
Some good project progress on the easy stuff this week. I was able to make my 30% superfat coconut oil soap, which I tried out a green color on. It doesn't show well in this picture, but at least it turned a bit green instead of the baby puke shade it had at first. It also gelled up in the middle a bit for an even better color, so I think I may look into ways to heat the soap as it cures to get it to gel fully, since that is also supposed to yield a better quality bar. It was also easier to remove from the mold than some of my past batches, it looks like the extra oils make for something softer and slipperier.
I also spent a lot of time in the last week on the idea I had, which is actually for a t shirt design that I am now trying to get someone to print and send to me. I have been cycling to work since I started having to go in and I like it a lot, so I thought this shirt would be a fun, cheeky way of expressing my relationship with my bicycle. The bike in the design is actually traced from the product photo for my bike!
Not too much progress on the blog post front, still reading chunks of the report when I have time. I decided this week that I would just work on whatever I felt like when I wanted to, which did turn out to be quite productive for my other two projects, just not so much with this one. Hopefully I can get some good progress on this one before family comes in to visit this weekend.
I was able to wrap up yet another track (a remix of Sandro Cavazza's So Much Better) and I also updated an old chrome extension that I'd been meaning to work on for a while. So all in all, pretty good progress so far :)
Had a busy week with other stuff getting in the way but I managed to make some progress. Most of the blade is approaching pre-heat-treat dimensions, and I started (ever so slightly!) on the crossguard and even made a little progress into preparing the wood for the handle. I've had to make some design revisions but that was entirely expected so nothing to worry about.
Two more weeks at this pace should be about right to finish on time.
Semi-random progress on the 4WD Tercel project continues.
The moving of the sole survivor car from my friend's old house to his new one has been delayed, so I had a little more time than expected to work this weekend. Started with replacing the old, worn out, barely holding on steering rack bushings for a set of polyurethane bushings that'll last much longer and increase steering feel somewhat. I say somewhat because this isn't a sports car, it's a small off roader, so "handling" is more of a theory. Either way, you don't want a steering rack to move and these will ensure that it doesn't and when I turn the wheel the wheels turn as expected. I have a large pile of polyurethane bushings that will go all over the car to replace the, likely 40 year old and original, rubber bushings.
In the background of the second steering rack bushing you can see the crossmember brace hanging down that I mentioned I'll be replacing with a sturdier part. I could technically push this one back into place and bolt it in place as it's a pretty thin crushed tube, but I don't wanna and you can't make me! Plus, why put the small piece back in if I can overbuild a new piece instead?
I've mentioned before that I was building a workshop/2nd garage at my house and that has started in the sense that the foundation for it has been poured and set, just awaiting the builders to be ready to do their part. So in the meantime a big, open, and, most importantly, flat piece of concrete on which to work is quite tempting. So I moved the Tercel to the pad and completed the Back to the Future hover conversion. Didn't have too much time left that day, so wanted to get some easy things done. First one was cleaning the underside of the car to prep it for any rust repair/conversion and chassis paint. The front half of the car is pretty pristine despite not being covered in oil leaks, the back half isn't great, but it's not terrible either with most of the corrosion just being surface rust.
That said, there are a couple of parts that need attention, the worst being the driver side rear wheel/quarter panel. I removed the mud flap to find this squishy mass behind it. Turned out to be a pile of old grease rags that has been sitting in the quarter panel space underneath the jack and roadside tool kit. The rags had undoubtedly absorbed some water and helped the panel rust from the inside out. Fun! Grabbed my grinder and had it tear away anything loose/too thin to be useful so I know how much of a repair will be needed after more clean up. I'll add a patch panel later to close up the hole. It doesn't look great, but considering I'm 90% sure it's the only hole in the entire car, I'll take it.
Since I'm replacing the fuel tank with a new one meant for fuel injection and need to get to the area above the tank for the chassis paint, I went ahead and dropped it as well after disconnecting the fuel lines. The old lines will be removed as well as they won't flow enough fuel for the new engine and just be a restriction to the fuel pump. I have some ne tank pads on the way and will coat the tank with chassis paint before installation to keep it from ever having the chance of rusting.
The sole survivor move is this weekend now, so likely will get less done for next week's report, but should be able to get the tank scuffed and painted during the week so it has time to dry and get both coats in place before being installed. Maybe. I need to get the new fuel lines in hand before the tank goes in...
I'm delighted again this year to read your updates, AugustusFerdinand! I'm incredibly excited to see where things go from here, especially given the current condition of the car.
Also, the coolest sounding link in your post is broken! I need to see that BTTF conversion!
Just lots of randomness this month at least, but groundwork for what needs to be done.
Fixed the link! Thanks for the heads up.
A new Canary build of Magisk was released and this one doesn't crash the Oculus when loaded, but still boots it without root. Going to try some manual patching, see if that makes results happen.
Shit's fucked, yo.
I'm at 10k of 25k words (pace) for Battlemage right now, and expected to fall further behind. Life seems to like throwing stuff at me when I want to actually do something, and I mentioned in my last update that I didn't have much free time, but this... well, it's not a curve ball, but more along the lines of the pitcher repeatedly aiming for the batter and the umpire doing nothing about it. May post something in ~life once I get more info.
I'm not dropping out yet, since I've recovered from worse, but depending on the next few days, it seems unlikely I'll finish.
I didn't make a whole lot of progress this week. It's now all sanding, which requires me to actually go do it. As opposed to setting up the printer, pressing "print" then walking away for 8hrs and feeling productive vicariously.
I got a little bit of sanding done. Need to do my first filler+primer coating, which requires the weather to cooperate at least a little bit since I have to do that in my garage. Currently temperatures are varying between freezing and the middle 50's, which is barely workable.
I'll be honest, I haven't really started yet. I've been quite busy with stuff most days and when I had free time, (like for example today) I didn't work on the project. I should have tomorrow and the day after pretty much free so I hope I'll be able to get some stuff done, because after that the next weekend I'll be busy and there's no guarantee I'll have time during the next week again. Still, even though I didn't really begin yet, I promise I will make a game. It might not be very impressive, but it will be a game. I have made a game in 2 days many times before and I have even created a game in 0 hours, so I will definitely be able to create a game in 14 days!
One day a week ago I went on a walk and gathered some references and recorded some sounds for the game I was thinking of making. But because I have nothing concrete created, at least I can still change my mind on what game I'll make.
