I wonder if this is a similar move to what happened with Salad Cream in the UK - the makers announced it wasn't selling, and they'd have to stop selling it. They got wall to wall newspaper coverage, with lots of well-known foodies saying how great it was, at which point the makers suddenly changed their mind and kept selling it, at a higher price.

Devastating but understandable if they aren’t popular. I wonder if sweets/lollies/candy will go the way of everything else, where we’ll seemingly have a lot of options but it’ll all be basically the same thing (like the endless variations of gummy sweet). Capitalism moves us ever away from distinction into homogeneity

I don't buy candy often anymore, but when I do I'm disappointed. My mom found a bag of Cadbury mini eggs leftover from Easter and gave them to me this weekend. I asked my spouse later if they had changed or if they always had so little chocolate flavor and we were just kids and didn't care. We agreed that we've heard that years ago, Hershey's or some other sub-par candy maker had purchased the brand here in the U.S.

Same with Oreos, although I think Nabisco has owned them all along. I bought a tray of them earlier this year and they had no flavor. As tasty as cardboard. How are they so popular?! They take up 1/3 of the shelf aisle, floor to top shelf, at my local grocer.

It's probably good news in the end. If these treats don't taste like anything, then I'll be buying less. I'll have to go out of my way for specialty candies, cookies, cakes. Which means I'll be buying treats less often, but buying locally instead.

This is fascinating to me! Creme eggs have been (and still are!) my favorite chocolate ever. What's changed about them? o:

Cadbury's isn't much better here in the UK. Subpar chocolate now, rather than it being smooth, milky and creamy, it's waxy, overly sweet and clags up your mouth.

Kraft (now Mondelez) bought Cadbury's here in the UK 13 years ago and the quality has dropped over that time, along with egregious shrinkflation. For example, changing the old rectangular blocks of chocolate to have rounded corners instead so they could save a little money or shrinking the size of creme eggs and saying "They only feel smaller now because you're an adult" and then they had to backtrack when it turned out they had in fact shrunk the size of them over the years.

I don't eat chocolate a huge amount now although I do enjoy a bar every so often so I tend to go for Tony's, Green and Blacks or even Galaxy for something that's cheap but, in my opinion, tastes better.

Tony’s is the bomb. A touch too sweet (which can be a good thing, it stops me eating much at once so an expensive bar lasts longer) but the flavour is amazing. It’s what I imagined Willy Wonkas chocolate to taste like! I also really like that they try to be ethical, but they’re also pretty transparent about how no matter how hard you try there might still be slavery involved because the industry is so opaque. I prefer that to them claiming to be fully cruelty-free when they can’t prove it

Agreed on the Wonka comparison though, big thick bars in foil and paper with a crazy design on top, it's got Willy Wonka written all over it!

The thing I miss is specialty seasonal candy. I probably wouldn't even like it much now, but at various times of the year there used to be candy that you could only get at that time of the year. I'm talking about in the U.S., maybe it's not the same elsewhere.

For example, at Easter time there used to be flavored chocolate eggs by some smallish company. They had creamy fillings that were maple, raspberry, and other flavors. The only specialty candy remaining is Peeps. Everything else is huge brands like Cadbury, Hershey, Nestle.

At Halloween time there were a lot of strange candies too. Now it's all just Snickers etc.

It's boring how the major brands crowded out the niche ones. You have to go to specialty stores to find that stuff now.

The trick here, is to import your candy, I'm partiel to Milka bars produced in Germany . . . and yes, import, sure amazon sells these candies with the same name, but they are not the same, there are plenty of reputable companies that do candy imports from Germany and the Swiss (I like tasteofgermany.com) but with the modern internet it's pretty easy just to pop onto a german or swiss site and auto-translate it and buy what you want.

As someone who loves gummy candy and loves mouth-burning sour, even the gummy candy is being capitalismed. Many brands are switching to whatever "healthier" and "kid-friendly" gummy base is the hot new thing instead of the old, extra chewy gummy candy of yesterday. I've noticed an uptick in lots of candy I enjoy becoming less sour and less chewy in favor of milder flavor with "less" sugar and gummy candy that sticks to your teeth. I've also noticed that brands I used to get have become less prevalent and being replaced with brands like Annie's (which I like their mac and cheese, but no thank you on their candy).

Oh well, better for me anyway, I suppose.

Low sugar sweets are an abomination. I don’t have a very sweet tooth and don’t buy sweet stuff that often, but when I do I want the real thing!

Similarly, I have not seen cookie dough bites which were always my go to movie theater candy in at least 5 years. Not even just at the theaters, I can't find them at Dollar Stres or Walmart either. I almost always check in with the little candy boxes when I pass them, and I can't think of the last time I saw them. A real shame.

I see them constantly at Five Below, FYI. My partner loves them so I make sure to pick them up for them.
