For me, he changed drinking coffee from “I guess I’ll suck this down so I feel more awake” into “the experience of preparing and brewing a morning cup each day is tantamount to sacred ritual in my eyes.”
Please be forewarned - there is a high chance you’ll start collecting (and using!) a plethora of coffee brewing paraphernalia if you fall into the Hoffmann rabbit hole.

If you haven't already, you should check out Hames Joffman. It's an unaffiliated channel, and they don't make videos any more, but they're a bit of old school Internet humour, and they're delightful.
This video also had many in the comments saying it was blurring the line between James Hoffman and Hames Joffman lol... I don't think I've seen him this wacky since the Bripe.

Fellow Weird Coffee Person here! Cheers! Hoffman and Lance Hedrick are to blame for my eternal spiral into the coffee world, and I am forever thankful for them and the joy it brings!

What I haven't seen here is a mention of how this isn't universal. From a quick Google it looks like only ~30% of people reported having 'a compelling urge to defecate' after drinking coffee, which means a supermajority don't. Which I think in a sense is more interesting. Why is this limited to only around a third of the population?
From personal experience, coffee has never made me need to poop. I mean sure, I guess I poop in a similar time window to drinking coffee, but that's only because I poop when I wake up in the morning, and usually drink a coffee right after (although sometimes before).
I had a friend who almost couldn't believe this recently. We were on a walk in a fairly remote area, and found a small takeaway coffee van, and I happily ordered one. She told me she couldn't because there was no toilet for miles around. I assumed even if you felt the need to go, she should be able to hold it in but... I guess not haha.
I'm an avid coffee drinker and drink coffee at multiple points in the day, none of which result in an urge to defecate, presumably because I've already gone in the morning. When I have my second poop of the day, usually after work, this also seemingly has no relationship to coffee.
I wonder if this is because I generally consume a high fibre diet, and am very 'regular'. I invariably have a 'compelling urge to defecate' at the same time twice a day which is maybe stronger than any urge that coffee could give. Curious to hear from the other 70% of people like me, especially if you don't poop on a regular schedule like me.
That's enough poo talk in one comment for a year though so I'll leave it there!

He does mention offhandedly that there is variation between some people, insofar as he mentions the effect being much stronger for some people than others. As with any survey, you'll get different percentages of positive responses depending on how you word the question. I don't know if I'd say yes if it were worded as "a compelling urge to defecate", as it's not a strong enough effect in my case to really merit the term "compelling", but I definitely do often feel the need to poop after drinking coffee. I haven't bothered looking up studies, but I'd be surprised if there weren't more than one that investigates the existence of this effect in this way. I assume the various studies investigating why these things happen are citing something in that respect, at least.
I can drink coffee in contexts without needing to poop and be fine, and I also poop fine without coffee, fwiw. I'm pretty regular lol but mine aren't quite as scheduled as yours.
I do remember reading some pop sci article that claimed the coffee pooping effect was likely due to behavioral conditioning and the usual time of day when people drink coffee. Which may play a part even if there is a physical effect.
I think it's behavior conditioning with a hot liquid. Years ago I experimented with this and today I have trained myself to use just plain hot water and it works just as well as coffee ever did. I...

I have no proof of this, but physically, the warming effect of hot liquids is enough to trigger muscle movements that create a chain reaction that kicks everything off.

But I do suspect there is some degree of behavioral conditioning involved for some people, either independently or alongside the physical stimulus. They aren't mutually exclusive, after all!

I am far from regular. Multiple days without a bowel movement are common, as are days with three or more small ones. I am vegetarian and think I get decent fiber in meals, but I used to have painful crampy loose stools kind of regularly (once a month-ish) until I started aggressively adding extra fiber to my diet: every weekday, a cup of oatmeal and a packet of Metamucil fiber cookies (cinnamon - the apple replaces some of the psyllium with oat, and the chocolate straight up has less fiber).
Coffee definitely helps reduce the irregularly, making a single morning bowel movement more likely. It's not a trigger by itself - only seems to work early morning, having a short walk helps, still need all the extra fiber - but it's a noticeable support.

edit: great video but I did think that maybe the bean character could have been names Sean. I dunno if that's too much of a stretch reference to Sean Bean.

Honestly I still watch the Bripe video from time to time. Do I want one? Questionable. Do I get a real kick out of James Hoffman's review? You bet!
I acquired a bripe as a joke gift for my wife. She loved it, but I don't think she's ever used it. It's just silly.
Absolutely same, honestly.

I really wasn't expecting the British coffee guy and then I REALLY wasn't expecting what followed.

Yeah coffee has never made me poop, I was always confused when people said this. However it does make me pee like 18 times in 1 day.
