For those not aware, chicken eggs can be contaminated with Salmonella before the shell forms. Checking for cracks or washing shells won't prevent infections from undercooked eggs. (And yes, I've learned this from dire experience.)
That being said, it's certainly possible to raise Salmonella-free poultry, but not necessarily at a cost U.S. consumers are comfortable with.
