Instead of spending money on some game with a cash shop and a battle pass, why not enjoy the finer things in life? Ripping and tearing some demons.

Play any good wads recently? Post about them here. Enough interest to play MP from other boomers like me? Maybe we can arrange something.

DOOM 2 is probably one of my most played games of all time. Spent many many hours in my childhood playing that game in the OG MS-DOS version. When my dad had to work on a Saturday, he would often bring my siblings and I to the office with him and get us setup on the office computers and we would have a good old LAN match while he was doing his work. Steam putting out DOOM 2 on their platform was awesome. I still fire it up at times today when I am bored of my current games.

I've always found sourceports to be more kludgy to work with for controller support.

Have you seen the "myhouse.wad"? I watched that vid a few days ago and I was impressed with the amount of work that must have gone into it.

It's well paced and well balanced and I can't get enough of it right now.

Never heard of that before, might give it a shot. Recently was debating getting all this going on my Steam Deck, hopefully it's viable. Who wouldn't want some DOOM on the go?

But this really only applies to GZDoom, I should think. I don't know really anything about Doom modding, but as I understand it, GZDoom is something closer to a modern FPS with mouse control and whatnot. But something closer to Original Doom where there's much less aiming required is more fun (at least, for myself).

My source port of choice is Crispy Doom, a fork of Chocolatey Doom with some further improvements like more resolution support and removed static limits. Still entirely Vanilla friendly, but comes with optional config changes to allow things like jumping or other gameplay features some mods use.

Something else I found extremely useful was Doom Launcher which provided an easy way to load all older Doom games and levels, and also mods and custom WADS. And then you can set up multiple source ports and use a preferred port for each map if you like. Super handy for when you eventually have a sprawling Doom map collection.

I set this all up and played through a ton of DOOM and custom WADs last year, everything should be in good working order still.

Oh man, Doom. I remember when our family got our first PC—running the fairly new Windows 95—and my dad coming home from work with a stack of 3.5" floppy disks containing Doom (IDDQD, IDKFA) and Wolfenstein 3D, and having to boot into MS-DOS in order to play them.

Having recently seen a walkthrough of the MyHouse.wad level, I actually have been considering loading up the game and taking a nostalgia trip. I remember also having a brief go with the map designer—I think my parents even got me a tutorial book about building levels that came with a CD with a bunch of resources on it—which made me appreciate the work that went into MyHouse.wad even more.

I love this post lol. Im a DOOM OG…Not only did I start with the shareware floppy on a 386, you’ve got a rare JagDoom vet here. Our music-free version is still the best on console!

Ha! For a few years I wasn't even aware there was something besides the shareware version. I played those levels to death :P

Really a fantastic game. Though I clipped the tail-end of it as I got into video gaming on PC a bit late, and shortly after we were all hyped for Duke Nukem 3D already. But later I dug it back out for nostalgia sake and it's staggering how well it holds up, including all of its successors like Heretic.

I live for Doom. Doom and Doom II and their mods seem to be really popular on this thread, so I would like to recommend Doom (2016) to anyone here who hasn't played it yet. It has its own unique presence, yet is Doom through and through. It's a fantastic, modern Doom, for anyone who wants to just run and gun.

I can't quite recommend Doom Eternal the same way. They tried tying it more to OG Doom in unnecessary ways, while also going overboard in the gameplay and the story. It's fun, but doesn't feel as much like Doom.

I'm running Crispy Doom with a doom.wad for the full game that I found in, huh..., an alternative place. Crispy works really well, with numerous QOL improvements. Crispy has its own gamepad settings, and it works well, but it can't map the triggers or the dpad on my Xbox S|X controller. I think I'll keep using mouse+keyboard. It's the old-school input anyway.

I am noticing some differences in the levels (not the changes made by Crispy), but it is hard to know if it is my memory that is failing. Is there a way for me to verify that it really is the genuine, 1993 Doom that I'm playing? And if I can't verify, can I find or purchase a suitable doom.wad with the full unaltered game to use with Crispy Doom?

The soundtrack sounds like shit but maybe it's the nostalgia. I muted it and put some Metallic on Spotify. That's how I often played in the 90s anyway. Good times.

On another note, is there something like a "hardcore" mode for Doom that reduces my ability to save and load at all times and disable cheat codes? That would be an interesting playthrough.

Edit: looks like I'm actually playing "Ultimate Doom", but it is unclear if and how it is different from the Doom I played as a kid...
Edit2: I just bought Doom (1993) super cheap on Steam Sale, but it's actually Ultimate Doom... the doom.wad seems to be exactly the same (same size down to the last byte). I put it in Crispy Doom and it's running just like the other. So yeah, I'm playing "real" Doom, but maybe there's a difference between Doom and Ultimate Doom? I really don't know. Nostalgia is a hell of a thing... well, I won't get a refund, it's so incredibly cheap I feel bad about it lol. Now I own Doom on Steam. It even comes with the DOS version running under DOSBOX :P But no official version is as good as Chocolate/Crispy Doom. I don't wanna play this exactly like I played before, but I wanna feel how I felt before, and Chocolate/Crispy give me just that. It's awesome :)

iirc the only difference between Doom and Ultimate Doom is that Ultimate Doom was the retail release with a fourth episode after the first three were sold as shareware.

There is such a wild variety of stuff in the doom mod scene. Personally I always enjoyed the style of something like Sunlust, where the point of the map is being efficient with gigantic hordes of monsters. Really cool stuff to watch speedruns of too, folks can be pretty damn ridiculous with how good they are.

There's a couple of levels out there too, which do crazy shit like non-euclidean level design. "The Quirky Domain" is the big example off the top of my head. But then too, if you go looking you can find stuff like lite rpg's, story-driven experiences, fantasy, sci-fi, modern, mil-sim (ish, it's still doom lol), so on and so forth.

And then you can go back in time and play just about everything folks made over the years. You can even find the old D! Zone disks on the internet archive if you want to check out some silly jank.

Edit: that graphic mentioned Oblige so I figured I'd give some input. Oblige lets you procedurally generate stuff and has potential for some really good maps, but does hit the wall of being very samey over time. Luckily it has a ton of options, go ham with them.
