That game is phenomenal, and the amount of work put into it is, well, breathtaking. Best time to start playing is obviously now.

Yeah I don't love the category, I think they really need to split it to best expansion/dlc and best continuous game. It's nice that the devs kept with the game though for sure!

Best ongoing games is "Awarded to a game for outstanding development of ongoing content that evolves the player experience over time."

And Cyberpunk has been great at evolving their experience, they don't particularly have "DLCs" outside of the new one, but even without it, they have really elevated the game through all their small updates and additions of contents.

I don't play much of those anymore, but stuff like Dead by Daylight, Sea of Thieves, Halo Infinite, etc. games that are putting out new content on a regular basis, games that have "season passes" type of thing I guess.

But then again, I really don't like how most award shows work in general, so I'm clearly not the target audience here.

Just wanted to post the full list of winners too!! Forgot to do that since I was so excited about Monster Hunter lol. Baldur's Gate winning was not unexpected for sure, but winning in a year with a new Zelda, Mario, and some other heavy hitters was more surprising!

I'll be honest, haven't played it yet, but now I'm super tempted to pick it up. Only reason I haven't is because I haven't finished Divinity Original Sin 2 yet, so I figured I might as well finish those first. Maybe I'll wait till Steam winter sales and pick it up on Steam so I have something to play on the long flights I have in the winter.

Maybe some recency bias with BG3? I feel like if the awards had been shortly after Zelda came out, it would have cleaned up. But I haven't played BG3 either, and have horrible memories of BG1 from about 2001 on an underpowered laptop, so I'm not impartial at all. Top down / isometric PC RPGs like that are a complete turn off.

Recently listened to the Triple Click podcast where they went through all the nominations giving their predictions. Made me realise that as a Switch-only gamer (at my most modern!), I'm pretty much out of the gaming mainstream loop. It's all PlayStation and Steam nowadays.

Honestly there was a lot of pomp about Zelda when it came out, reviews were great, and there was plenty of organic buzz about what people were doing with the building mechanics. But the praise for BG3 seemed anecdotally much better to me and had longer legs - specifically in the sense that people are still talking about how they'd set a standard for video game writing that other AAA productions weren't close to touching.

I think BG3 had the bigger overall impact - it could very well be a generational game that people are still playing and modding years from now. Larian hasn't even released any DLC yet, just patches (patches that contain entirely new game modes and interaction scenes, mind you), but I think it's got a lot of breath left in it yet.

Also, BG3 was the game that put AAA studios on the defence, with several devs and studio reps saying "this isn't the new normal for video games, it's an anomaly, it's not possible for studios to make games like this" - it was THAT good, and it's not possible for AAA studios to replicate something of that quality because of the artificial constraints put on them by shareholders and profit models. BG3 showed what is possible when you put story, talent, and creativity first, AND it showed what you can accomplish when you listen to and are responsive to the community.

I'm a lifelong gamer and I have become super wary of AAA titles and big-hype games. I dove into this one without any context other than it was a DnD game, and I love it. I love the game, I love the stories, the music, the mechanics (not the inventory system which I think they're working on fixing), the VOs, and I love the passion that you can SEE from the people who created it. 30+ years as a gamer and I think it's my favourite gaming experience so far. Personal preference aside, it's had a significant impact and I think we're going to feel the ripples through this next generation of titles. If that's not GOTY-worthy, I don't know what is!

That's probably a major difference - community support with DLC, having mods, etc. Zelda was an upgrade to a 6 year old game and is done. Nintendo have even said there is no dlc planned, and ofc the switch is a totally closed modless platform. Hard to keep constant interest about something frozen in amber like that.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Alan Wake won Best direction over all the heavy hitters though. I think it really deserved that and there was no way it would get GOTY with all those heavy hitters, but it definitely should've gotten that one.

Was a nice surprise this year that one big name game didn't win all the awards itself, they seemed much more fair and accurate.

I think it's intentional. Breath of the wild was a launch switch title, had regular patches, and had 2 DLC expansions. Tears of the Kingdom was a very late gen title and currently there are "no plans to add updates". To a game that already nearly sold 20m copies. We already know from Mario Kart 8 that Nintendo is perfectly fine playing the ultra long game in terms of updates.

This is clearly a play to stay low until the next Nintendo console is revealed. And they are likely saving up a variety of existing game updates or definitive editions on top of the new titles. I would bet my bottom dollar that there's going to be a bunch of next-gen only enhancements and expansions for Tears of the Kingdom to coincide with the new console launch.

I wouldn't say so. BG3 is an immense work of love and manages to blow zelda out of the water even in content. There's just soooo much to BG3 and almost none of it feels slapdash or rushed.

BG1 and 2 are incomparable to 3. As in, actually immeasurably different. Any feelings you may have towards 1 should not and cannot be applied to 3. It just is that good and the award is well deserved.

Recently got a ps5 myself and wondering what game I should go for next. It feels like a toss up between Elden ring, bg3, god of war ragnorak, returnal, Spiderman 2. Dang I really don’t know.

I've platinumed GoW:R and Spider-man 2, and both of them are incredible games that are fun and have great stories. GoW is more challenging and a bit longer though, but Spider-man is just straight up fun.

Returnal was one of my favorite games that came out in the year that it did. It's tight and really well designed, and it's considered one of the more challenging games.

I’ve platinumed Elden Ring twice now, once on Xbox and once on steam. I can’t say it’s for everyone but I was/am blown away. It was my first souls game and I’ve since purchased all DS games and a number of souls-likes because I think it might be my favourite game genre now.

People said it was too easy, too hard, too accessible, too inaccessible, rich in lore, completely lacking in lore, blah blah blah. Just try it, it might be your new obsession too!

I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

You should let @Nivlak know that! haha I have Elden Ring on my back burner right now, maybe I'll get through it soon. Also I'd check out Monster Hunter if you're looking to scratch that itch :)

I have MH Rise, it’s a game I think I should like but I just can’t get in to it. I keep trying but after 30 mins or so, I just meh.
