I'll do roundups for last week's continuing deals tomorrow but....
I read @Thomas-C 's comment on the Gaming Club post, and I wanted to throw this deal into this thread:
https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/monster-hunter-world-iceborne-master-edition
Fanatical has Monster Hunter World: Iceborne + base game for $16 and change. I think it's an incredible starting point to the series and one of the most immersive games I've ever played. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and I always love talking Monster Hunter. (Gunlance ftw!)
$21.59 cdn for both is probably just low enough for me to finally jump in.
I'm completely new to Monster Hunter. Any tips for a newb? Best weapon set for someone new? Anything I should do to help ease the learning curve?
Personally I would say you gotta learn how to read the monster's movements. World is pretty good at telegraphing the monster's movements without being super obvious, but you fight a monster enough and you should be able to tell exactly what it's doing at any given time.
That being said, if you have Iceborne, you'll be able to craft something called a "Defender Set". Don't use it, it's super OP. Going through learning how to fight the easier monsters generally smooths out the learning curve.
Weapons, just pick the one that seems the most interesting! If you like playing shooters or ranged weapons, the bowguns or bow are great. Like being a bit tankier (or just love explosions?), the gunlance is for you! There are a lot of quick video overviews of how everything plays, including the general damage outputs and playstyles. This is the one I used when I first started figuring out what I wanted to play
Always pick up honey, and make sure your radial menus are comfy and item loadouts are good to go! make adjustments as you see fit.
Overall just have fun! Monster Hunter World is one of my favorite games of all time, I always feel like I'm learning and getting better over time.
Edit: feel free to ping me questions directly as well! I love playing and teaching people how to play. I have about 450 hours in Gunlance though, which is a really niche weapon, so any weapon specifics you might have to look up yourself haha.
You don't need to craft the Guardian set. You can pick it up for free from the armor vendor in Astera, IIRC. (And yes, there's just a straight-up armor vendor across from the smith, believe it or not. The thought of just buying armor and weapons in MH:W seems weird.)
Huh that is really weird haha. It's still definitely a good idea just to skip it anyways
I kept with target-specific loadouts going through vanilla, for the most part. If I had particular issues with a hunt, I would jump into the Guardian set when I got frustrated and that usually saw me through. I wouldn't recommend using it much more than that.
The whole point of that set is to be a quick and easy way to get through the vanilla main quest to reach the Iceborne content for people starting new characters or trying to catch up to their friends in Iceborne. It's supposed to carry you through the main questline if you don't feel like messing around with custom loadouts. But then, if you're not practiced building custom loadouts by the time you get to Iceborne you're pretty well screwed, so I don't really see the point beyond what I already described.
You're the best. Thank you.
I just got Iceborne a little while ago and picked the game back up to get through the main quest in vanilla in preparation. I'd be happy to go out on a few early hunts with you, if you'd like. MH:W is best when playing co-op.
Shoot me a DM if you're interested.
Edit: that offer is available for pretty much any of you, if you want a little help jumping into the game. Just don't be a dick is all I ask.
Appreciate the offer. Just need to find the free time to start it. I'll definitely reach out when I do.
My hobby is less playing games than buying games, installing them, never playing them, and then uninstalling them, so I can't promise I'll keep it installed forever. It never hurts to ask though, so drop me a line if you ever feel the mood take you.
Hah, I'm basically you. Add modding to those steps and we would basically be the same person.
Fanatical Safe in Our World Charity Bundle 2024
ALL proceeds from this bundle go to charity. Think of it as a donation rather than a purchase. It supports Safe in Our World which is focused on mental health awareness in the gaming industry.
Included games (all Steam keys):
Koei Tecmo is currently having a Steam sale. This is something of a big deal because they are the same people who will have games that are over a decade old but still selling for full price.
You should absolutely use this chance to grab some of the Atellier games.
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is free on Epic Games Store right now:
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/doki-doki-literature-club-plus
Lost Castle is also free:
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/lost-castle-abb2e2
Roundups and previous comments from the previous Save Points thread:
Doors: Paradox is still free on EGS till Thursday
Humble's Soulslike Bundle is still going on for 9 more days
Humble's Controller Chaos for 16 days
Humble's Exceptional Indie Allies for another 17 days
Steam Microsoft x Bethesda Sale
Steam Quebec Sale
Steam Swedish Sale
Nintendo Switch Devolver Sale
Thanks for pointing out the Devolver sale. Most of their games are absolutely perfect for the Switch. They play so well in handheld mode.
And I almost always like their games, and often love them. I mean The Messenger, Enter the Gungeon, Loop Hero, Downwell, and Ape Out are all games I LOVE, and they're all under $5.00 each. Das a steal.
Steam Lunar New Year Sale 2024
Post any highlights you find! Ones I've noticed:
Every game in the Need for Speed franchise (well, I should say: the ones that are available on Steam) starts at 85% off, with Heat going for 95% off.
The Tomb Raider Definitive Survivor Trilogy includes the three modern rebooted Tomb Raider games + DLC for 93% off.
Noting here that I looked at Venba, a game about an Indian Canadian family, and it looks lower on Humble according to ITAD.
GRID Legends is 90% off.
It is quite likely that it will be removed from Steam at some point. All other games in the series have been removed from Steam over the years due to their licensing agreements running out.
Lethal Company is 30% off right now: ($7)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1966720/Lethal_Company/
Definitely a really good time with friends. Would recommend especially if you liked Phasmaphobia or similar games like that.
If you're interested in getting started in Cyberpunk Red, the TTRPG set in the world of the video game (and subsequent anime):
https://www.humblebundle.com/books/cyberpunk-red-2024-r-talsorian-games-books
I've been wanting to get into Cyberpunk for a bit so this seems like a good one to go with!
Amazon has Star Wars: Squadrons on sale for $2:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GPKC3TW
Soooo good, especially if you have VR and/or a flight stick. So many magical moments from my childhood realized lol.
MegaMan Franchise Bundle at Humble:
https://www.humblebundle.com/games/mega-man-franchise-pack
Note, the 50% coupons probably aren't worth it, the Battle Network games have been more than 50% off even right now according to ITAD. Decent deal if you're into the old school Megaman games though
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is on sale! (30% off base for $42, more if you have Humble Choice, for me it's $38)
https://www.humblebundle.com/store/armored-core-vi-fires-of-rubicon
Quick update: AC:VI is actually cheaper on Gamesplanet if you don't have Humble Choice atm:
https://us.gamesplanet.com/game/armored-core-vi-fires-of-rubicon-steam-key--6072-1
Humble Bundle's Mindbending Masterpieces Bundle:
https://www.humblebundle.com/games/mindbending-masterpieces
$10 for the Witness might be an all time low? Superliminal is also excellent, make sure you set it to $15 unless you wanna pay more (and you want the two games, Patrick's Parabox and Tajji, don't know much about them tho)
