Of course, I had to ask Miyazaki if Shadow of the Erdtree will once again include a poisoned swamp.

"In a word, yes," he said. "But this was actually a point of introspection for me after creating the base game. It was only after creating it that I realised I really like to create poisoned swamps. And this was a little place of introspection and reflection for me. So maybe, when players reach the poisoned swamp in the DLC, they will feel a little bit of this retrospection."

At the 1 minute mark in the trailer, we see what's clearly a deathblight swamp... So apparently his retrospection was "players love to hate, or hate to love, how difficult my poison swamps are, so...

We just need to take solace in the fact that the death blight isn't as bad as Dark Souls 1.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll drop the game on the 25th, being the 2 year anniversary of the base game release.

Don't love announcements of announcements or whatever, but I get it. Was wondering if somehow they'd pull a sekiro again against all common sense.

Thought your name was a Cowboy Bebop reference until I 2x checked and realized the extent of my ignorance - as well as the origin for its use in the show. TIL lol

It’s brutally hard and a lot of that difficulty comes off of having a tiny health bar. So you get stomped on by bosses trying to learn how to play the game and if it never clicks it’s a miserable experience.

I think there are some obvious ways of rebalancing death around restoring boss health and letting the player resurrect an unlimited number of times. What kills me in all these souls-like games is the walk of shame when you die.

I think the gameplay loop is super rewarding outside of the experience of learning each boss.

It’s there but there are a few gates to pass through.

Early game you can access Hirata Estate before you fight Chained Ogre. That lets you pick up some shinobi tools and skills before needing to fight the Shinobi Hunter or Ogre. Hirata is optional, but beating Shinobi Hunter opens up a path to an easy XP farm.

Beating Ogre takes you down the path towards the castle, which has two boss gates you’ll have to clear. There’s a merchant before Ogre somewhat hidden on top of a hill with crows circling it that sells Firecrackers that are super effective against the bosses on this path.

Once you reach the castle you can explore some of the surrounding areas before taking on Genichiro. Genichiro is the big fight before the rest of the game really opens up, but there’s plenty of chance to build up health and healing prior to that fight. Genichiro is tough, but he forces he to really understand the parry and counter mechanics in the game. A lot of fights are easier after him since you’re bullied into getting good.

Sekiro can get linear in parts because you can only avoid a boss for so long, but to me it feels like a metroidvania at parts because it usually has multiple branched paths you can explore before hitting a boss gate. I think it’s also important to watch YouTube videos on how to deal with each of the bosses. Most every boss has visual tells on what combos they’re going to throw down, and opportunities to punish them. There’s also cheese tactics as well.

It's a samurai/ninja fantasy, so I can see someone being turned off of it if that didn't match their expectations/preferences.

Maybe they'll be able to incorporate elements into some of their future games.

They already added some Sekiro-ish stealth and the new DLC trailer looked like it potentially had a reused asset(s) from it (don't want to directly spoil in case someone hadn't watched it yet).

I'm so f*cking excited for this. I can't wait for it to release in June and actually play it.

This was a pleasant surprise though and I'm hoping it's a huge expansion!

Think they'll overhaul or change anything (mechanics or otherwise) from the base game?

That depends on what kind of DLC it is.

If it's the type of DLC where you bring your existing character and get to keep the loot from the DLC into the main game (like most FromSoft DLCs to my knowledge, or Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, etc), then no, there won't be any mechanics overhauls. There might be NEW mechanics though! Like maybe a new style of Wondrous Physik, or a new type of mount, or ashes of war and spells that are radically different from the base game ones.

If it's the type of DLC that's basically a standalone game you boot into separately from the base game (like Resident Evil 4/4 Remake Separate Ways, or a full on standalone launcher like the InFamous DLCs), then anything is on the table. With 2 years of dev time and a full standalone experience, it could be basically as different as a sequel would be, just the same engine.

Now that I think about it Torrent could use offensive capabilities. Maybe a snake tail for inflicting poison when enemies surround you.

The Great Hollowing has been an honor and a curse but I've been OOOOOH'ing for years and I won't stop now. This is going to be another great one I'm sure.

Since I saw the news reporting that From Software got the IP rights of Elden Ring from Bandai Namco last week, I was expecting that maybe there was a struggle between them on the business strategies of their DLC.

I was thinking that Bandai Namco would be pushing for more DLC from From Sofware, and the IP rights would signal that From Soft managed to "win" this struggle and put out more of a massive one big DLC instead of cutting them in pieces like DS2 and DS3.

But this trailer changed my perception. The things the trailer shows seems to be pointing at one "big family" with this Mesmer, and maybe an exploration of all the themes that seems to be associated with this family.
Miquela doesn't seem to be the main focus point, so it open the possibility of having more DLCs to construct a bigger picture on Miquela.

I wonder where it's set, exactly. Seems like it's a trip to the past, which makes me curious whether we will see whole new spaces or some reworked old ones, perhaps both. Either way I'd be happy, I think ER accomplished much and it's a great pleasure to play. It's like its own illiad, a big myth. With dlc included I bet it stands alone for a long while.
