If you already owned either game, you have access to the re-release for both on the platform(s) on which you have it:

Now the definitive, newly enhanced versions of DOOM + DOOM II are available in a single combined release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, in addition to PC platforms and Game Pass (subscription required). This definitive enhanced version is our biggest effort yet with online cross-platform Deathmatch and Co-op for up to 16 players, community-published single-player mod support (with in-game mod browser), optimized renderer, accessibility options, optional modern IDKFA soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult (including brand-new DOOM II recordings) selectable alongside the original MIDI soundtracks, presented in up to 120hz in 4K on supported platforms (see FAQ below for details) and a brand-new episode “Legacy of Rust,” with new weapons and demons made in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames.

If you already owned either game, you have access to the re-release for both on the platform(s) on which you have it:

Note: Existing owners of DOOM (1993) and / or DOOM II on any of the above platforms receive a free upgrade to the new combined game, and can still access their previously owned versions.

DOOM + DOOM II does not support the Steam controller

Controller, keyboard, and mouse are supported on all platforms

What an odd thing. From my reading I think that it means it doesn't use Steam Input API since the Steam Controller will just emulate an Xbox controller.

You're probably right, but I've never actually seen them phrase it that way before. Like, the Steam Controller is the Steam Input layer, and it works with everything the user wants it to work with. Hell, I have it working with Microsoft Excel. It's just such an oddly-specific thing for someone to say on an update posted to a game's Steam page.

I was in a bummer mood and the inner complainer leaked out. Hope folks enjoy the updated port and new wads

Steam Deck currently listed as unsupported. Doubled the price of the pack. I was gonna grab it on Steam since I just got a Deck and they're having a DOOM sale. Guess not.

I remember playing Doom from a link in an email on my government PC during work.

Hah, it is funny when you put it like that! Y'know, I was assuming it was approved before the update and the release reverted the approval, but it not being approved to begin with makes more sense. The "toasters playing DOOM" is from ports after all, I take those for granted. On the other hand, if I were putting together a shortlist of games I'm throwing at Proton for testing, DOOM '93 would be in there.

Yeah you're definitely not wrong and if you're going to do this work in the first place you might as well make it officially support Steam Deck. I just found your comment hilarious.

The minimum system requirements on the steam page are amusing too. "Intel Core i5-3570 @3.4 GHz or AMD Ryzen 3 1300X @3.5 GHz"

Wild, I wonder if that's because of the more recent add-ons or just because.

This is a YMMV situation and might not necessarily work, but people over at /r/gamedeals were reporting that standalone DOOM and DOOM II keys will still activate in Steam and give access to the new bundle.

DOOM is out of stock from the places it's on sale, but DOOM II is still available on sale from Fanatical and GamesPlanet for 65% and 60% respectively (under $2 USD for either store).

Also, I just tested the game on my Steam Deck and it worked fine out of the box -- no tweaks or configuration needed. It looks like the new bundle replaced the old DOOM page and inherited its properties and reviews, so I'm thinking the Unsupported tag applied to the old build and hasn't been updated for the new one.

Ooo, thanks for the info! I have a DRM free copy with a source port on my PC so I wasn't really so bummed, but good to hear the new one does just work.

FWIW, "unsupported" often means "no-one did a manual check on it", and not "it absolutely doesn't run", that's all. Conversely, a "verified" game isn't a good indicator either because it just means that the game checks the arbitrary boxes required by Steam, but still can run like an ass.

If you want to verify if a game correctly runs on a Steam Deck, you need to go on protondb. If the badge is Platinum, it will run perfectly.

That is one of the weirdest restrictions to me. Like, DOOM is one of those games that so many people took great pride in getting to run on anything. Like, DOOM successfully running on a potato was a big contributor to that meme existing today. The fact it isn't supported on a Steam Deck in comparison is actually kind of sickly hilarious.

I mean, at worst you should still be able to use its iwads with a sourceport.

For some reason doom 2 is supported but not the original doom. I was planning on buying both but only ended up buying doom 2 so I could play it on my deck.

Damn well hope this is good. Doom never had a good windows release, I don't really consider doom95 to be any good as it had dodgy support (always had issues getting it to play midi) and seemingly never had proper mouse controls, combined with a bad UI. I guess GZDoom was the quintessential port we all used but that's a source port, not an actual port.

I always considered chocolate doom to be the true windows port, it's really just a 1:1 doom port to windows. Of course, DOS doom is also technically speaking a good windows port if you're counting 9x only...

Color me very interested. I know the world of WADs and mods out there have plenty of variety, but it always feels like something special when an episode gets officially pulled into the fold, especially considering the real pedigree that the folks at Nightdive and MachineGames bring to the table at this point. I’m almost more excited for it knowing that they were involved vs. it being a sole id effort; the new QUAKE campaigns that MachineGames released were especially outstanding. Thanks for sharing, @kfwyre!

I tried the multiplayer and felt as lost as I did trying to play Marathon multiplayer. For me the big thing is hit recognition. I only got 3 kills in a game, but I don't even know who I hit. Lacks that chemical reaction you get from ding sounds lol. I think I'd rather play Quake, it still holds up imo.

The singleplayer in Doom is still really fun and satisfying though. My first time playing the campaign and really enjoying the monster sprites and the way the guns feel. Could do without the labyrinth maps, but I imagine they're part of the nostalgia for a lot of people. Shotgunning someone is just as satisfying as a shotgun should be, but I always kill myself with rockets. The other weapons are solid enough, but I keep the shotgun out 90% of the time.

Going to finish DOOM 1&2 campaigns first, but would like to try some of the promoted mods and user uploaded ones. Any suggestions?
