Does anyone have experience with any of the games and, if so, would you recommend them? Is there anything in here that you're particularly excited to play?
Also it's pretty much a monthly tradition now for @kfwyre to go "wow, look at how well all these Windows games work on Linux!" But like, well, just look at that chart! Seven Windows-only games; six games with great Proton reports.
Say it with me everyone: PROTON IS MAGIC.
You nailed it, talklittle! And thanks again for putting up this topic.
Thank YOU for all the great topics you come up with on Tildes. It's been said countless times but the community is really lucky to have you, kfwyre!
Re: the browser extension I mentioned: I think it was last month when the seed was planted that this Humble Choice topic is a pain to post, and @cfabbro graciously posted it that month. When I looked at it I decided it needs some of the drudgery taken out of it. The extension is ready now! It's still awaiting approval on the Firefox Add-ons site—I hope you use Firefox—but the code is open source and the extension can be installed from https://github.com/talklittle/humble-choice-info-table under the Releases section.
It's not a one click thing: it still takes a dozen clicks to fill in the info per game—a hundred clicks for 8 games—and a human has to be involved to steer it. But better than having to do manual typing and searches and copy-paste of URLs. I didn't go so far as writing a one-click scraper, which would have felt a bit distasteful given how AI scrapers are overloading sites today, which is why it's a browser extension instead.
I hope it ends up being useful for you. Or if you have reservations about installing yet another browser extension just for this, that's fine too: I can run it each month and hand the markdown table over to you or whomever's posting.
Oh my GOSH THIS IS SO COOL! I just tested it out, and it's so much easier than what I was doing before. I think it generally took me around 20-30 tedious minutes to fill out the whole table manually, in part because I had to do a lot of checks to make sure I was pulling the right info for the right games and putting them in the right spot. In a markdown table, especially one filled with links, it isn't always obvious if something's not right until you preview it. This is going to save me a TON of time.
You are a kind genius, talklittle! I have no reservations about and only delight in using your software (I already use Three Cheers daily). Also I've been using Firefox since it was called Firebird, so no worries there. 😁
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
The kindness, thoughtfulness, and support of people here never ceases to amaze me. I love our little community.
A lot of the credit must go to dxvk.
DXVK is maybe the magician’s assistant? And WINE is the technical director for the whole show?
Whatever they are, they’re all awesome.
Also the seventh game is not unplayable because of some technical gaps, but because of anti-cheat going out of its way to restrict the environment.
I bought Humble Bundle for the first time last month. And this month's selection just... Doesn't seem worth it for me personally.
As I noted in another comment, Destiny 2 is free-to-play, so this is just DLC. And I don't care for sports games in general, but I'm also more wary of the annual release ones, and I know I'm far from the only one. Having those two in a single bundle as the big "headliners" seems like a bad idea to me.
The only other ones that stand out to me are The Plucky Squire and Return to Monkey Island, but... Not enough to get it this month.
Destiny 2 isn't really F2P, it's more accurately a free demo that you then need to buy at least some of the DLCs to get a remotely full experience.
So, minor update regarding Destiny 2: apparently a new update came out today, and the subreddit is NOT happy. Sentiment was already low due to lingering issues from previous updates and DLC, and the newest update didn't fix it. There's a lot of complaints about things like being super grindy, bad distribution rates for resources vs spending for upgrades, features and builds getting nerfed, and some new timers being literally impossible without speedrunner-type exploits to skip sections.
But the one complaint I see come up the most: the game is just not fun. The game is more chore and frustrating than fun at this point, especially compared to previous states.
I think that's probably the reason they got it in Humble Choice this month. They knew player sentiment was already low and that the new update wouldn't meet fan expectations, and wanted to get as many new players who didn't know the state of the game hooked as they could before... well, this. Basically just trying to preemptively boost numbers so that the inevitable exodus wouldn't kill the game entirely. (Especially since a lot of people are now apparently planning to just ditch it for Borderlands 4 since it releases this week. Really bad timing for an update to bomb.)
Yeah I resubscribed last month and never had an easier time cancelling than this month. Having them in the same bundle is a weird choice but maybe there are lots of wrestling fans out there that have also decided now is the time to get into Destiny?
Plucky Squire is a good addition and I find myself oddly drawn to wrestling games, if only for them to be the most realistic version of fake fighting, except I haven't found one that gives me that same WCW/nWo feeling.
Also, getting into Destiny this late? I'm not sure how it is single player but I guess there'll be at least a small player bump from the bundle.
From what I've seen browsing reddit, currently feelings towards Destiny 2 are pretty unhappy. Something about recent updates just screwing everything up (more than the usual such complaints), and also discontent at removing a lot of content over the years, including some that may have been paid DLC? Also, that removed content is no longer compatible with the modern game, as they explained in a legal case regarding accusations of copyright infringement with some of it.
Also worth noting Destiny 2 is free-to-play, so this is just a bundle of DLC. So uh... Yeah.
There's nothing here that interests me this month. But if you are interested in these games then these are pretty cheap. For example WWE 2K25's previous all-time low is £21 alone.
I'm only interested in Plucky Squire and Grapple Dog because (1) I share my steam account with a teen (2) cute and (3) eons ago I played this one grapple-platformer on the PS1 that never saw a localisation, and it was fun.
But even as a very casual observer to the Humble format, does this seem like less interesting of a package for most gamers?
I tried out Grapple Dog. It's a neat little game. Bright, simple graphics, and movement that's easy to learn, hard to master.
Sometimes I play games and come to the conclusion that they're not for me, but they're the exact kind of game I'd want to watch a speedrun of. This is one of those. My forays through the beginning levels were clumsy and awkward, but I can see how, with practice and mastery, the movement would become satisfying and buttery smooth.
So, not my cup of tea, but definitely a good game for what it is. If you're looking for a retro-inspired 2D grappling hook platformer (which, let's be honest, there aren't terribly many of), then this is a good fit.
1 Sports Game (Wrestling), 1 Racing Game, 1 2D Action Game, 1 2D Platformer, 1 Strategy Game, 1 FPS(es... DLC...), 1 Classic Adventure Game and 1 Action/Adventure game. Maybe discounting FPSes because Destiny is F2P there is a little something for everyone here. Normally the bundles without '1 big game' are a bit more well rounded and in this case, with Destiny 2 being the low point, that's not the worst bundle they've ever put together.
Except for Plucky Squire, most of these are games I likely wouldn't have picked up or known about and since Squire was already on my wishlist, everything else is a pleasant surprise - Though I'll likely only end up playing Plucky Squire, Speed Freeks and Return to Monkey Island any time soon.
And I, like you, share my library so if any of the other games are enjoyed by other people, win win win.
This month is the first time I'm pausing my humble choice subscription after having had it since it was very first implemented. So few of these games sound like something I would even want to play, especially with the price increase from last month, it's absolutely not worth it this month for me.
