It's cool to see this finally released after it's been talked about for so long. I played a lot of Binding of Isaac years ago, and thought this would for sure be a day 1 buy for me when if came out. I'd be happy if I got it as a gift, but with how little time I spend on games now I don't think I'll end up buying this myself in the foreseeable future.

I'm curious how good this is, the videos that were posted of the gameplay looked interesting.

The style is classic Isaac grossout, the mechanics are fun and crunchy. I wish I could choose my cat/adventurers more carefully, but it's easiest to just reach into the breeding chamber and pull out four likely cats from the teeming masses. Strongly recommended.

Yahtzee Crowshaw did a great little review for it today and when he's only a little sardonic, it's a sign that I need to play the game.

I really don't want that to be my only contribution to the topic, and while the Binding of Isaac is my exemplar of what a rogue like is and does, the grid strategy genre isn't really my bag, and I don't really have the desire to invite another 100+ hour game into my life. Love me some rockabilly though, so the OST sounds amazing.

Huh, that's an interesting thought-piece. To start, I don't actually recognize anyone listed in the article (and I didn't look at the full list).

It's an interesting test case for the classic "separate the art from the artist" debate. On the one hand, I can imagine several notable people who I would be appalled to have included in art I want to enjoy, and usually fall on the "can't separate art from artist as long as artist is benefiting (whether financially or socially)". But in a case like this, donating a meow in a sea of hundreds, barely qualifies, and I can't really see how the voice in question really benefits at all (I can't imagine they were paid, or if they were it was probably a small lump sum and not ongoing royalties), and even if their voice is recognized it doesn't really platform their ideas the same way inclusion in a podcast or something would.

I do think McMillen is kinda weird/suspect for taking such a "controversy-centrist" stance on it, but I already know he's weird, and as someone else in the thread here said I feel like his schitck is "irreverence beyond offense", so that kinda lines up.

Ultimately I'm trying to imagine if there was a person bad/evil enough to make this an issue for me, but I can't really think of it. A few people would rankle my nose a little to know they were included, but again the chance of me ever actually recognizing them by their meow is essentially nil, so my actual enjoyment isn't really impacted.

Anyway, that's all to say this is so tiny, and I can't imagine it's actually controversial in any real way (even the VAs in question actually consented to their arch-nemeses being in the game with them as mentioned in the article), but is interesting to think about and analyze with my own values. Now I kinda want to look at the list and see if there's anyone I would recognize, and try to listen for their cat haha

Edit: Recognize Tom Cardy, The Professor (assuming it's the mtg one), and of course Northernlion, who I'm surprised is on the list! Obviously he built a career around BoI, but given he didn't even remember the release date for Mewgenics I didn't expect him to be in it

Edmund McMillen posted a live version of the song to commemorate the OST release. I'm normally not tempted by soundtracks, but Mewgenics is remarkably strong on the music front.

I knew of this game thanks to noclip, as a combination of their podcast and an interview on the noclip2 YouTube channel.

They recently also had a follow-up on the podcast in the wake of the Adobe animate announcement (prior to the update) which is worth a listen to in terms of how it would effect the game.

The Binding of Isaac is probably the game I'd choose if I had to play a single game until I die, and it looks like Mewgenics is going to be at least as good... But I'm usually not a fan of tactical games.

I am! I'm in a similar boat with you re:Isaac, by far my favorite Rogue like of all time, and only prudence is keeping me from immediately naming it my favorite game overall (I'd have to at least give a few other games consideration).

I've only played about 2 hours so far. I got it essentially because of my overflowing goodwill from Isaac. So far it's been really fun. I appreciate that (so far at least) it's meta-progression mirrors Isaac style, in that new unlocks are variety and mechanics, rather than "You are now 0.5% better at collecting Blue Spirit Dust" that seems to be the defacto way to do rogue likes nowadays (some do it well, most just feel like an arbitrary grind).

The humor is McMillan: lots of poop and immature humor, and these cats are NOT treated with care or respect (there hasn't been any cat gore or anything like that so far, but there's references to mistreatment of all kinds). I've actually enjoyed the writing so far, but I do think he excels most when he speaks least (eg Isaac has extremely minimal dialogue/writing, and let the environments and designs speak). Shout-out to the soundtrack, which is dumb as hell, featuring many custom songs about cats and environments sung earnestly and accompanied with good beats, I love them.

The gameplay has been fun so far. You make a party of 4 cats, assign them classes, and go room by room doing fights or events. I haven't had a ton of time to explore yet, but the gameplay seems solid, and I feel the interplay between cat abilities, classes, and items strikes a good balance between giving you options without being overwhelming. It helps that the stats are pretty simple, makes it easy to decide what goes where.

The meta-game of getting new cats, and breeding them, I've only just scratched the surface. I've already caught on to the idea of "keep good cats to breed, get rid of sucky cats", but beyond that I haven't grasped it too much. I can already see a future unlock described as "help with breeding", so maybe there'll be a more legible interface for managing genetics to be unlocked soon.

Overall, highly enjoyed. I don't see myself crossing 1000+ hours like I have with Isaac, but who knows!

It's uniquely Edmund (like Isaac, Meatboy, etc), somehow irreverent beyond offense. The strategy is great. It gets pretty deep while still being light enough to be entertaining (like Isaac vs other entries in its genre), and assuming you're into Isaac at all for the vibe, you'll definitely enjoy it.

Tried it and refunded it. The 10x10 grid games are not my thing, don't know why. Maybe it's managing 4 cats at once, I prefer something like StS, where it's 1 character.

Yeah, it's closer to X-Com 2 than it is to StS.
