    Color me skeptical.

Multiple employees from Cloud Imperium Games have come out and said that the story is false:

This is weird to me. No one on my team had to use PTO at all, and I felt that CIG was extremely flexible/understanding. In fact, I just asked a load of people on the team about this and it confused everyone. Unfortunately, I think this is an outright lie. :(

This is also somewhat bewildering to me. I have been with Cloud Imperium Games for 6 years now, and this company has been nothing but supportive and understanding. They have helped me through some tough times in ways no other company has. I don't think I would be with CIG as long as I have if any of this were ringing true. I had our studio manager even personally reach out to me to check up on me to see if everything was okay. I had my direct managers offering anything I needed and never had to use PTO for the storm. All for clicks though, I am sure.long as I have if any of this were ringing true. I had our studio manager even personally reach out to me to check up on me to see if everything was okay. This is a confusing article that annoys me because from everyone I know and work with in Austin it is not the experience that people have had. CIG has been extremely supporting and helpful throughout this and this article is just clickbait Pensive facePouting face

CIG has always been really good to me. I've not experienced what is being said in this article. They've always been there for me in dire times, especially during my double mastectomy. While I'm not aware of everyone's particular situation, I wanted to talk about my own. (1/?) I've been with CIG for four years. We've gone through a lot together! They helped me through the deaths of my Mother & Grandmother in the same day, They were there for me through my health diagnoses and my surgeries, offering constantly kind words and support (2/?) Fall Hot beverage Black Lives Matter. And even sending me get well baskets with food and essentials. Again, I don't know what others' experiences may be like. I'm not discounting anyone. I just wanted to say my piece. I love my company, and this article was not the case for me.

Adding my experience here. The studio managers reached out to me several times to check in even though I had told them I still had power, and even though I don't live in Austin yet! I've had jobs that forced me to work in conditions like this, CIG is absolutely not one of them.

Kotaku doing their usual poor job of "reporting" again, to suggest other studios and management wasnt aware of the situation is ludicrous. The situation was discussed daily in meetings I was involved in and there was no expectation of people being available to work in ATX.

This was my experience as well along with studio managers asking if I needed food, water, or emergency help after my apartment flooded and I lost quite a lot of time, personal items, and living space dealing with it along with the power outages and lack of water for days.

I can only speak for myself here, but as someone who's worked for multiple studios throughout my time in the Games Industry, CIG absolutely treat it's employees the best. By a county mile.
I adore working where I do, and that's not something I can say I've felt for my former Games Industry Employers. :(

Skepticism is good! Honestly, the whole gaming industry could use a lot more skepticism as too many people take what these game companies say without any critical thought. But let's apply the same amount of skepticism to these tweets.

According to this comment on r/games, almost all of these people are self-identified as CIG PR, HR, not located in Austin, or some combination of those factors. Some of them are literally being paid to say good things about CIG, RSI, and Star Citizen. The others risk nothing by saying good things about their employer. They stand to lose a lot if CIG goes under. Given how much CIG relies on marketing, as it can't rely on their released product, they need to maintain a positive image to keep cash flowing.

Kotaku has six sources within CIG Austin for this article. They risk their jobs talking to Kotaku about working conditions, largely because they're not unionized and Texas is an at-will state. Kotaku, and Nathan Grayson, don't benefit from CIG going under and can only marginally benefit from making up stories. They might get some views for a sensational story but this story isn't particularly sensational. This is fairly standard journalism. They heard something was happening, got some folks to corroborate the story, asked CIG for their side, and published it. It's perfectly believable for what else has happened within the gaming industry. If they are making it up, they lose a lot of positive reputation. Maybe they found six liars with enough of a consistent story to publish, or maybe it's true.

It's great that some CIG employees feel taken care of and love the company. But it doesn't seem like that experience is entirely universal. They really ought to unionize anyway, to make sure that they're all having an awesome time working there.

Ah yes, what could an ad based revenue site stand to gain from a clickbait non-story about a company that has a dedicated hate readership? You even felt so compelled to post it here, a place that rarely ever sees game news beyond large announcements. You are the target audience for this style of clickbait journalism.

Sure, not all of those employees work at the Austin location, and it's no surprise many of the active social media personalities are involved in the community, but it does help paint a picture of the work culture across the company, and it's really not one that does a lot of crunch or overtime in the industry.

Finding a few disgruntled people in a company of 600+ isn't exactly difficult. Given the employee response to this, I'm inclined to believe Kotaku didn't do a very good job painting an accurate picture of what actually happened.

Wow, that's an abnormally aggressive and insulting response to the simple request that you consider the source of all this praise for CIG. I'm not attacking you but it seems like you're attacking me for what? Sharing something I found interesting? Isn't that the point of Tildes? If I wanted to read more marketing announcements, I'd do it elsewhere.

But you're clearly more invested in this than I am. I hope Star Citizen comes out and it's everything Roberts promised. I think an awful lot of people are going to find out why the big publishers passed on his vision.

Star Citizen is one of my favorite development train wrecks. I'm nominally invested in it, because I got a key for the whole game (SP + MP) way back when in an AMD game bundle. When it was "released", the only thing I could do was load up a hanger, look at my space ship, and sit in the cockpit. Last time I loaded it up, I could load into some space station and look around while it ran terribly. No idea if there is a game to play yet.

There was an interesting write-up over on /r/HobbyDrama that covered it well, at least from my complete outsider's perspective (aside from hearing the title a few times).
