1 in 7000? That is surprisingly high. Yikes.

Yeah, that was a harrowing read in more ways than one. Especially, I thought, that most of these cases appear to be between first-order relatives (parent-child or sibling-sibling) — almost certainly cases of abuse — rather than more distant relatives.

But. With the Internet in our pockets and sex ed and waning of shame based cultural values, I'd like to believe this number is at an humanity all time low and falling.

And this number is just a floor: It reflects only the cases that resulted in pregnancy, that did not end in miscarriage or abortion, and that led to the birth of a child who grew into an adult who volunteered for a research study.

Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of data from before the 90s, but I've read a number of researchers say that it's their considered opinion that it's been generally falling since at least the 70s — which, to me, is definitely suggestive of a long-term, multi-generational trend.

I can't comment on whether or not it was more common in the past, I don't know, and I hope it is falling now. But why would you wish misery on your ancestors?

The misery was already there, or not. Wishing will not add to the burden of the dead, nor will it lessen it.

I do wish for as many of them to have eventually found happiness as possible, and it is also my duty to honour their sacrifices, but it's not possible to pretend many women had protection, agency and choices throughout history. That people, including men, prey on helpless victims especially when they can get away with it undetected is the sad reality.

Someone changed the link even though it isn't in the topic log. Not sure if that's a bug. This is the link I provided:...

It seems like you get a limited number of free articles per month with my link. I believe there's also only a 14-day window to read the gifted link. That may be why the link was changed.
