Almost done with episode 4 and man, this format is such a winner. It shot straight to the top of my favorite jet lag formats (with hide and seek) with no reservations. It's very good at showing the country's various places, it's exciting and it's balanced. I did think Australia had enormous potential when they did it, and liked New Zealand a lot as well.

I am actually curious how that'll change this style of game compared to the Australia season which had much fewer nodes but more flexible travel between them.
Other than train seasons having an inherent coolness advantage over plane seasons, of course.

I did notice that, the linear loop-ness of it all makes me think that it'll play more like the New Zealand season, with each team going in a different direction around the loop. The strategy there then is deciding how to defend your holdings once you pass them I suppose.

      Episode 1 spoilers

Ok, I think this series has potential. There's a fair amount of strategy and mingle games for how many coins to put down at each stop, which they've commented on in the podcast as keeping the game feeling fresher than the other formats.

Oh, and I instinctively called them coins didn't I. I know they're chips, and the team called them chips to differentiate then from how coins work in other seasons. Still, even in this episode, they have to fight calling then coins. I think coins would have been ok, they've used it as a generic term before.

I think Adam and Ben made the right decision to not combat Sam and Michael on the bird challenge, and instead be a bit more aggressive on the board to get some stations down. Plus they got to choose the busier side of the island where there are more stations and more trains to connect to.

On the podcast Michael talks about his strategy for the bird challenge, which was to try and memorise everything. In hindsight, he realises that Sam is almost definitely going to choose a distinctive bird and therefore he doesn't need to memorise every type of dove or pigeon. It works out in the end, because Sam chooses a distinctive bird. Also not shown on the show is the fact they had to find the sign in the park. It's not at all obvious where the sign is, so the first step was to walk around and find it in the first place. They decided to cut all that from the episode to keep the pace up.

Adam at the tofu rocks going in with a plan to remember a sequence of numbers abstracted away from the path he would be taking was certainly a choice. I also think his chances went down drastically when he realised it was a hex grid rather than square, as that seemed to shake him really bad. For those sorts of challenges I think the answer is just to try and memorise the shape of the path relative to a certain direction and follow that shape as best as you can.

The cat village was very vibey, though I don't think I'd want to live there. I think the novelty of having all the cats around would wear off quickly. Michael was right in that the photo of cats touching would be the hardest to get. My watching buddy was talking about how "cat puddles" are a thing, but that's only for cats that are more familiar with each other and are in a safe place, and I feel that's less likely in a village full of strays.

Back to Adam and Ben, as soon as I saw the Buddha and pagodas was a Monty Hall problem I paused and told my buddy "mathematically they should switch, but I am sure Amy would have chosen the Buddha to fake them out". We then had a tangent where I had to explain the Monty Hall problem to them (which took a while), but I felt vindicated at the end when it turns out that Amy did indeed put the metaphorical car in the Buddha tower.

The quiz questions for the hot tub hot seat were tough, I'm not surprised Sam didn't get them. Apparently there were more geography and food questions that Sam would have answered, but of course Michael doesn't know Sam having only played this game for less than a day at this point. Also they didn't really factor in how long it would take to just ask the questions, so they were both glad they attempted a conservative number of questions even if they didn't get it.

I'm definitely looking forward to how this one plays out. As I said at the top, it has potential for sure, and the loop-like nature of Taiwan's rail network makes this game work really well here.

Episode 1 spoilers I felt bad for Adam at the tofu rocks, I think the principle was good, I'd find it easier to remember a string of numbers, at least for a brief period. But they should have looked at the rocks first and seen that they're not so perfectly aligned as to allow that to work. I had to laugh when he was still panicking about that realisation and about 20 seconds had passed - that's when I was absolutely positive he wouldn't be able to do it. I think two minutes to learn that pattern would be a tall ask, even with a functional "notation", tbh.

I'm really enjoying watching them have to get away from the railway (stations) to get to challenges. I'm not blown away by Taiwan's beauty (yet?), but I find it fascinating to see around a different country like this.

What do you think of the Sam/Mike pairing? I'm really enjoying Sam get a teammate that he seems to have gelled with almost immediately. It's great seeing him laugh, get mocked and mock in return, and generally be able to bounce off a guest like that. Mike's bringing great energy, almost like Michelle, but wound down a bit, makes them fun to watch. It's really a big strength of Jet Lag having that core cast with new (and repeated) guests, it really helps keep it fresh.

      Episode 3 spoilers

Monkey mountain delivers! The team on the podcast all agree that 40 monkeys was about bang on the correct number for this challenge, in that it was both high but also achievable. Sam and Michael had quite the shock learning that the boys earned 80 coins from that, especially after going low with the boba challenge.

The zoo challenge entirely depended on whether there were grazing animals in there. Luckily there were, and it's quite funny that they immediately walk in and find a llama. They do comment on how challenges sometimes deviate from their expected value (sometimes a low value challenge is hard, or a high value challenge is easy), and that's just part of the game. There is also some chatter about the spreadsheet they were using to track everything, and how they blacked out the rows until that challenge was unlocked, and used colour coding to note the state of it. It's a lot of manual admin to be doing mid-game.

I have to say, I enjoyed some of the edits in this part of the episode. Sam and Michael drop their bags off and comment on how freeing it is, then we cut to Adam and Ben having to lug their packs up the mountain. Adam and Ben talk about how they need to find monkeys, then it jumps to Sam and Michael outside the zoo looking at the monkey enclosure. Later we see both teams wanting to get on the train they need, one team get on and the other doesn't.

On the podcast they mention how these two challenges were almost simultaneous, and there were tough editing decisions to make those cuts work. The boys completed monkey mountain only about 10-15 minutes before Sam and Michael attempted the zoo challenge, which is so close when you think about the fact they are doing two animal challenges on opposite ends of the country. I'm glad they did shift things around a little, as watching the entirety of monkey mountain in one go without the cuts to the other team would have been really long.

Sam and Michael not making it onto their train actually helps them here, because they end up with the ability to go for a different steal. Trying to count jellyfish in curved tanks in a low-light mirrored room is the kind of thing you'd see in actual reality tv. I think they both did a very good job at following through on the challenge. I've quite enjoyed these challenges where the two team members have to be in sync with each other, and it seems they do too so I wouldn't be surprised if more of these featured in future team games.

I'm really enjoying how this season is going. This is a good format for the location they've chosen, and I think there are things they can definitely take into future games.

      Episode 5 spoilers

Well done Adam on walking with a stack of 6 cans across a windy bridge. As they were trying it out in the 7 Eleven I was thinking about there was no wind in the store, and as soon as they get out there it's blowing a lot. Adam's shirt is tucked in which makes it more obvious, but look how much it's billowing there. They make it, they get the chips, and they decide to commit going north.

And that's about where the good news for them ends.

Sam revealed on the podcast why they knew there was a challenge at the crayon factory. I have mentioned in earlier comments that they didn't know all of the details about challenges going into them, but one they did know was that somewhere there were giant crayons, and that they'd be doing mastermind there. They did not do research on how to play mastermind before doing the challenge. As soon as they saw it, they now knew where it was. Michael had never played mastermind before, so on the walk back from the factory to the train station he was watching YouTube and studying how to play the game. I think he did pretty well. When Sam asked if he wanted to do another practice round, he knew they didn't have much time and op-ed to just go for it. It ended up timing perfectly with the train coming in as he wins the game. They're not beating the scripted allegations on this one...

In hindsight, this is the point where the boys say they should have turned around and gone back around the island. Of course, that's not what happens when you see yourself having a chance at getting through that giant wall of stations, especially with a call your shot challenge after you've smashed two call your shot challenges already. One of my watching buddies (I've recruited another friend into watching the series) audibly cringed at Ben's confidence that 6 wasn't that much worse than 5. Of course, we all know how that turns out. To finish this bit off, "Ethan slop" anagrams to Hospental. I hate anagrams (my least favourite part of doing cryptic crosswords), so did not get this until after.

This was another tipping point episode, where everything before it led to this circumstance. There isn't really any way for the boys to break through and go up to Taipei, so it's going to be a looooong train ride next episode.

        Episode 5 spoilers

Yeah, I still would have been surprised if Adam had managed to succeed at the balance challenge even if it wasn't windy, but the fact that it was that windy and he managed to succeed is extra impressive. And Michael absolutely nailing Mastermind was somewhat surprising and impressive too.

Ben's confidence that 6 wasn't that much worse than 5

LOL, yeah I just knew they would fail as soon as Ben said that, and they actually went with 6 instead of 5... especially when they only needed 5 to break through! Sam predicting them getting cocky and that being their downfall made it extra funny too. :P

I'm excited to see how next episode goes. Ben and Adam may have a loooong ride back to the SW before they can pick up any more stations, but they're ahead by quite a few stations at this point so it isn't a guaranteed win for Sam & Michael.

        Is it, though?

        Spoilers up to ep6

Ben and Adam have been ahead in station count pretty much the whole season. Far ahead, as of episode 6. Also, they made a conscious choice to push for high risk high reward bets in variable challenges, which paid off for them until it didn't. Their failure to break through to the north was due solely to a single unit mistake.

Sam and Downey were more conservative with their bets and as a result they had more predictable outcomes, but the drawback is they left chips on the table which prevented them from taking a lot of stations early. Especially since they had to keep scrambling back and forth across their territory to react to Ben and Adam's moves and challenge positioning (without actually getting those coveted Taipei challenges as of this moment).

As a software developer I think I might improve the formula by creating a better algorithm for generating new challenge positioning that biases the result taking into account current player positioning and existing challenge positioning, among other things. But even without such an improvement it has felt to me so far that things could go either way. I think I could improve the game because I'm a big game balance enthusiast, but almost every season of Jet Lag seems to have a huge RNG component (not to mention natural catastrophe interference, such as Deutsche Bahn!)

Ep 6 - Taiwan Rail Rush That wasn't the only deciding factor. Where the challenges were drawn is random, and so it turned out that more stuff spawned to the north, but it wasn't an automatic win. If the challenges had gone down slightly differently at any point in the past, Episode Six would have looked very different. It's not (at least in this case) a failure of game design, I don't think. Just bad luck and a misplay.

        Episode 6 spoilers

I think there's definitely reason to keep watching, if anything because both teams are still capable of making bad decisions. One of my watching buddies pointed out what Adam and Ben thought, which is that fortifying the low-speed low-frequency line with 5s is a bad idea. Especially so when there are two other paths through that area, one of which is a high speed line that cuts right into heart of Sam and Michael's area with more options for challenges and claiming. They run the risk of putting themselves low on chips, and with them having fewer stations at this time, they're the ones that need to make the first move in a stalemate.

It was cool to have a challenge at the chrysanthemum festival. I love events like that and always make an effort to go when my city's gardens have an event on. I think they did ok at the challenge (especially since they passed). I would have got the first round wrong, but for different reasons.

Sam's Grindr profile joke for Ben being represented by the bear was re-recorded in post. He did say it in reality, but there was an issue with the mics. The mics they usually have record to two audio channels, so they can grab each person in the team's audio separately. However tech breaks often enough in this game that they have spares and buy more during the game. The mini version of the mics they used as a replacement do not record to separate audio channels, so when Sam was going around and explaining his choices both Sam and Michael's audio was being recorded to the same channel. Unfortunately for the production and editing team, Michael was watching TikToks the whole time, and the sound from those was all through the audio. They were tempted to leave the audio in, but couldn't due to copyright.

Not terribly much else interesting from the podcast chatter, in part because one team is just sitting in the snack zone the whole time.

      Episode 7 spoilers

I believe Sam and Michael were in much stronger position towards the end of the previous episode compared to where they are by the end of this one. Hemorrhaging their chips on lines with lots of stations that Adam and Ben aren't considering is certainly a very risky play, and basically means they have to achieve their challenges in the north and commit to making their way down the east. I haven't seen the finale yet as of writing this, so I'm interested to see how this season turns out.

The challenge that Sam and Michael did at the rainbow village had to be slightly modified on the fly. The opening hours on Google Maps had it closed on Saturday and Sunday, but they arrived on Monday and it was closed. They could only access the outside, so they had to choose from photos on characters on the outside only. I think Michael's description was very good, and maybe this challenge was tuned a bit on the easy side, but that's just how this goes.

The two of them also did well with the roundhouse, after all they were only off by 1ft and I feel like that's only because Michael didn't round their guess up to 150. The fact that the pavings are 1ft by 2ft definitely helped, which can be estimated by looking at their feet. My watching buddies and I briefly debated whether this counts as "using only your body", and we figured it was close enough.

Though the big thing in this episode is definitely the setup for the stalemate. I definitely think that Adam and Ben have the upper hand here, as Sam and Michael must be the ones to move first. Sam and Michael have some level of control based on when exactly they try to leave, but with how fast it is for the boys to catch up to them, especially since they have to stop for challenges before heading down the east line, that's not going to be much of a time advantage. Genuinely, I think that Sam and Michael might have thrown their incredibly strong position away from an episode and a half ago, and I don't think they got much from doing so.

There honestly wasn't too much in the way of discussion on the podcast for this episode. A few anecdotes here and there, some little stories that didn't really go anywhere. They were definitely holding back a bit because they didn't want to talk about the resolution of the stalemate, for obvious reasons.

      Episode 2 spoilers

My feeling about this season keeps growing.

I think it was definitely the right decision of Sam and Michael to go back to the west coast of the island. With there being more stations there, I feel like it's more likely that new challenges will appear in the area, as well as there being more ways to get there between the high speed and local lines. It definitely pays off, especially when do many challenges end up being in the top half of the map where they already are, which then effectively forces Adam and Ben to go down even further.

That tofu rocks challenge strikes again. I this Sam and Michael did the right things by practicing beforehand to give them the best chance. They also realised that trying to translate the path to a sequence and memorising the sequence was more effort and it'd be faster to remember the path. Still, it bested them. Apparently when Amy designed the path she might not have known that the memorisation time was only 2 minutes, due to the way that challenges were designed this season.

The McDonald's taste test was meant to be a shrimp tempura burger, but the particular place they went weren't selling it. Amy had actually put together an entire list of fallback options, and the one they had was like 3rd on the list.

Apparently they've had the challenge where you have to film for some amount of time where nobody enters the frame in a lot of seasons, it's just never come up. As soon as I saw Adam take his shoes off I physically cringed. I've lived near a fairly silty river, and I just do not enjoy the squelchy mud, and after that he would have had to put his socks and shoes back on without cleaning them and that just is not fun. Apart from that, I think they did pretty well here. They identified an area where nobody would go, then angled the shot to ensure the best chances, and went for it. Not much to say about it really.

The following is a direct quote from the podcast:

So then Mike and I go and acquire some juicy balls. Juicy balls to suck and blow on, [...]

      (I refuse to grow up)

They say it on the podcast, but it's cool that there is just a place that made boba tea a thing, and it has stayed in a small building, and while it has definitely been upgraded over the years, it's still just a shop on the street and not some big giant commercial enterprise. As for the execution of the challenge, once they figured out to shoot them high their success rate went massively up. There would have been some editing, since Michael said their success rate was about 50% by the end, but that was still way better than shooting straight for the cup. If they knew about the technique before calling the shots, then I'm sure they would have gone much higher.

The monkey mountain cliffhanger was such a good place to end the episode. I haven't watched episode 3 yet, but I feel it could go either way. In the research they did before making their guess, they saw videos with lots of monkeys, but in the video itself I'm not hearing all that much noise, and there's only so much distance you can cover walking and looking out for monkeys in 40 minutes.

There was some extra chat on the podcast about their overnighting, Sam and Michael stayed at this nautical themed place, and I was thinking their story was actually going to go somewhere or explain why there's a nautical themed hotel in a random office building, but instead it ended on some social embarassment as they are asked why they're choosing to stay there. This paragraph I'm writing also seemed like it was going somewhere.

        Ep 2 spoilers

Yeah, it's still early, but I suspect Sam & Michael doubling back to the North West might have just won them the game since the density of stations there is significantly higher which is causing (and likely to continue to cause) the majority of the new challenges to appear nearer them than Ben & Adam. Speaking of which, I think if they were to do this sort of game again they really need to do something to fix that potential issue. Perhaps by actually making it less truly random, and adding a minimum/maximum distance from the nearest competitor for the next challenge to appear, and/or ensuring at least one challenge appears reasonably close to each team so it doesn't end up being completely one-sided.

Another thing that kind of bothers me about the game design is the stealing chips mechanic. IMO it's way too easy for teams to quickly spend their excess chips as soon as they see the other team heading towards a steal... which makes that mechanic feel like a total waste of time.

Regardless, it's still been entertaining so far though and I'm looking forwards to the next episode.

Apparently when Amy designed the path she might not have known that the memorisation time was only 2 minutes

Ah, I was wondering about that. Because even with all the practicing Sam & Micheal did, that felt almost impossible to memorize in just 2 minutes.

As soon as I saw Adam take his shoes off I physically cringed

LOL, me too. So gross. :P

      Episode 4 spoilers

      Quote of the episode:

Ben: Well, I'm holding a banana.
      Adam: wheeze
Ben: ...and it tastes like a banana.

Looking back at this episode, so little and so much happened here. This feels like a turning point almost, where everything the teams have done before led to this point.

Of course, the big thing that happens in this episode is that Sam and Michael have a path to steal the steal, and do it. The challenge itself seems to be one that wasn't quite calibrated correctly, but i mentioned in last week's comment that that's just a natural part of this game. It seems very much like they looked at a map, took the most straightforward route to town, and the place they were looking for was on the corner of the main street.

The big knock-on effect is that Adam and Ben have do throw down so many chips on their stations so that the steal didn't give Sam and Michael an even bigger chip lead. They might've won 70 chips with the taste test challenge, but they had throw them all down in an area that Sam and Michael were never going to contest. Now they're basically in a position where the have to go big on the can stacking challenge in order to try and break through the barrier to where the challenges are.

I'm very interested to see how the next episode plays out, because a lot of this game now depends on whether Adam can walk 200ft with a stack of cans. If he succeeds, then there's the possibility of breaking through into the Taipei area where both teams are rushing to claim challenges. If he fails, then it'll be difficult to dethrone Sam and Michael. I'll always root for the boys, but I definitely want them to succeed even more here.

Sam and Michael have a path to steal the steal.

Yeah, them managing to steal the steal was huge. And I was totally wrong about the steal mechanic being useless. Both in this episode and the previous one the steals have had a massive impact on the game, even with Adam and Ben dumping a ton of chips beforehand.

And yeah, if Adam fails to get a significant amount of chips with that task and they can't break through the NE I think that's pretty much a guaranteed game over. :/ They would have to backtrack aaaaaaaaall the way to the SW where the high-speed rail line is before they could pick up any more nodes and then ride that all the way to the NW to get any more. And that's a LOT of wasted travel time!

@cfabbro Sorry for posting this, I just really wanted to discuss this last episode. I tried to keep your usual formatting, if this is not okay I can take it down and leave a standalone spoiler comment. I will update this with the YouTube link (and title) next week once it comes out.

So so happy with how this turned out. I watch Jet Lag with a couple of friends and we’re all very pro-Badam. I have to wonder to the degree Sam is consciously a foil. Honestly I’d rank him lowest of all people ever on Jet Lag in terms of personability.

I knew Badam would win once I heard Sam say one of the middle episodes was his favorite on the podcast. Obviously if he won the game he’d consider the last episode his favorite.

Episode 8 Spoilers This game was——by far——my favorite game they’ve played on Jet Lag so far. The actual play-by-play was a bit underwhelming, and the ending two epsiodes left me wanting, but there was so much strategic potential left untapped.

I think that, during the last days, both teams gave up strong victory by stalling. The game is called Rail Rush! and I think both teams would have been rewarded for completing challenges quickly, even with the steals on the board.

This game basically came down to one team or the other failing a challenge, and I think the same would have happened without stalling (but by rushing, teams reduce their own variance by doing more challenges).

I hope they repeat this game, and we get to see a real chaotic ending with time pressure to complete the last challenge in order to make a critical final train.

      Episode 8 Spoilers

Just finished the episode and I am so disappointed. I was hoping Sam and Mike would bring it back after the last episode of blunders, but they continued with just throwing away sure ways to win and choosing to go for some crazy risks, which were also blundered by Sam in the worst of ways... I really thought Mike choosing an orange rock with black stripes for the tiger was very clever. But Sam just decided to focus on the obvious pig and over think it so hard.

Overall a very interesting season, I liked the format and there was a fair bit of "sightseeing" (the pagodas were really interesting and made me want to actually go and visit them) The last two episodes of blunders really left a sour taste though and I know how "playing form the couch" can be so much easier compared to actually being there, but some of these things were very obvious misplays. I'm not firmly team Badam or Sam/whomever, but this time I really wanted to see Sam/Mike take win, more so because Mike seemed so on top of the game (which would continue the trend of Sam getting carried). But it is what it is.

Episode 8 Spoilers Yeah, the last two episodes were just one blunder after another. Ben and Adam were forced to waste almost an entire day traveling back through their own territory, not taking stations or gaining chips, while Sam and Mike were completely free and had a ton of options. The board was extremely favorable to them, and yet they seemed to play purely for the brilliant endgame rather than using the time to actually gain a lead. And then they chose to stall when time is running out as if they're in the lead.

I do enjoy the fact that the team that won, was the won that basically circumnavigated the map, and also were the ones actually playing the objective (gaining stations) rather than setting up 4D chess moves while staying in one small quarter of the map. I mean, it would have been really cool if Sam's plan worked, but it seems unlikely it ever would have. I guess, as a viewer, I just like gameplay that is more concrete and not so theoretical. Same reason I hate it when some seasons end up devolving into people staring at phones looking at train schedules. It's not very engaging from a viewer perspective.

I really enjoyed Mike on this season, will definitely check out his solo work. But I do think by the last couple of in-game days, he was mostly following Sam's vibes. Sam seems to succeed best when he has a more level-headed partner who can push back when he overthinks things. Next season he's teaming up with Amy, so maybe that's when Adam's win streak gets broken.

I'm looking forward to Sam/Amy (Samamy?) next season. I really believe Amy can carry Sam, which - if it happens - will prove that Sam needs to be carried in team games.

Mike and Sam spent too much time metagaming and not enough time actually... gaming!

It played out much as I expected as of ep6. They got too confident in being able to possibly win challenges; that is no substitute for actually controlling the stations. I hope when they play this format again Sam is more aggressive!
