If you had told me ten years ago that the guy who wrote and directed The Squid and the Whale was going to write a Barbie movie, I’d have looked at you like you’re crazy…
I've been waiting for this movie to come out for so long. You could have got me at Greta Gerwig, but when those first stills showing off the hypercolor aesthetic came out I knew I had to see it....

But why am I waiting until July! Barbie is a toy - you need to do toy advertisements before Christmas! Warner Brothers continues to ruin everything they touch.
Ok, I was definitely expecting something downright awfully terrible that'd make my eyes roll out of their sockets. Instead... I'm totally enamored and now must see this film. It appears very...

Instead... I'm totally enamored and now must see this film. It appears very self-aware and self-satirizing in presenting a childish subject to an adult audience. And it seems just plain fun.
TBH the very concept of a Barbie movie meant for adults is so interesting I'd probably watch it even if I knew it were just a remade version of Life-Size. I think Tyra would have been in on it, too.

If this is a tenth as subversive as the Lego Movie, it's going to be a good time. Talent looks amazing and the Barbie brand has no problem taking a joke.

Being that nearly everything that is DC IP tends to come out absolutely terrible, it's a relatively safe bet that Batgirl would have as well. Most items on this list are objectively bad.

There's a bit of bad blood between Mattel and Aqua after the whole lawsuit, I'd imagine. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattel,_Inc._v._MCA_Records,_Inc

That was literally Mattel not understanding how fair use works from a legal standpoint. Parody is legally protected under US copyright law and the First Amendment.

That's a gross oversimplification. Mattel's lawyers perfectly understand how fair use works, but that doesn't mean they're unwilling to pursue legal action in the chance that they get a judge that...
That's a gross oversimplification. Mattel's lawyers perfectly understand how fair use works, but that doesn't mean they're unwilling to pursue legal action in the chance that they get a judge that rules in their favor. Mattel saw the song as a detriment to the brand, MCA would be unlikely to push back if they lost the first case, so there is minimal risk and (in their eyes) great reward in pursuing having it censored.

Based on their complaints about the song, it seems they've got some fundamental issues with the song beyond that it's referencing their trademark. Primarily the (not subtle) sexualization and referring to Barbie as a bimbo. Both are things Mattel has historically gone out of their way to downplay and disassociate with Barbies.
But, hey, if this movie is as subversive as it seems maybe we'll still see it in the movie at a more impactful point.
Also although it would be somewhat cool to see Mattel embrace an ironic distance to their own brand the song is a downright "fuck you" to everything Barbie stands for.

Oh no... It's the complete opposite of Oppenheimer and releases the same day.
Double Feature!
Counter-programming works. Mama Mia opened the same day as The Dark Knight, and went on to break the record for biggest opening weekend for a musical.

So they can batgirl and several other projects but Barbie made the cut???

They missed a real opportunity by not using Barbie Girl by Aqua in the theme song.

What @augustusferdinand said, and I'd imagine that all parties involved are still a little sore over it, so no song in the movie.
