I'm really torn about this one. I liked Gerwig's Little Women, because it was both enjoyable and clever, but at the same time, I'm veeeeery reluctant to go along with something that's essentially a huge marketing effort by a massive brand. I'm thinking I'll probably pirate it - I'm super curious but at the same time don't really want to support Mattel.

But I totally understand the desire not to support a glorified toy commercial. I’m personally going to see it, but I don’t think I could do the same with, say, an American Girl movie. Barbie, to me, is knowingly commercial. She always has been.
I just saw an opinion piece on YouTube that was talking about how movies need marketing to succeed, because that’s what generates interest. Movies without hype are absolutely tanking in theaters...

You can't get a movie about toy-based IP otherwise. It's all inherently marketing. At that point, it's what they try to do with the IP. Having talent writers making an insightful and daring movie...

Having talent writers making an insightful and daring movie is on the "good" extreme of possibilities. It's an much better approach than something like, say, Battleship or GI Joe.
Thanks. The almost makes me (M,79) keen to see the movie, despite not having watched a movie for maybe fifteen years. My kids, all very much adults, might have to go, perhaps with the excuse of...

I love Greta Gerwig as a filmmaker. I hope this flick is killer.
I have to admit I really want to see this. It looks weird in all kinds of ways.

And like what big movie isn't a huge marketing effort by a big brand?
At least this movie seems far from soulless.

I get your point, but I don't normally watch those either.

I honestly can't wait for this movie, and really wish I had the time for the fabled Barbie/Oppenheimer double feature.
