Looking forward to my Barbenheimer weekend. More for the latter, but that wonderful juxtaposition is just too good to pass up for a sensory overload.

Which order are you viewing? Personally I’d see Oppenheimer first then Barbie as a mental palate cleanser, sort of a decompression.

When I went to the mall the other day I’m not exaggerating when I say every second or third shop had some kind of barbie tie in. The clothes shops had either barbie branded clothes or a range designed to look like what she’d wear, the shoe shops had barbie pink shoes, the coffee shop had a pink barbie smoothie… I don’t think I’ve ever seen that level of advertising for a movie before

I was one of those people. Tickets were on sale so far in advance and they rotate movies so fast out of Dolby + IMAX (at least by me) that I didn't want to get crappy seats or miss the premium formats. I booked the tickets a couple weeks ago and the good seats were already taken for about the first 4-5 days of showings.

Ah, I was wondering what those two have in common.

I simply couldn't bring myself to want to watch the Barbie movie. I think it will do very well at the box office (just like the Mario movies) and all but confirm future sequels/spin offs, but the brand itself is off putting to me. The movie soundtrack is good though.

So is it Oppenheimer first with a post apocalyptic Barbie chaser, or the other way around that one should watch these two together?

My group and I are doing Barbie first, then Oppenheimer with an hour in-between for dinner. The reasoning being that we just think it'd be funny to go from some Muppets Go to New York type story to a movie about the guy that made the atomic bomb. I'm not in love with either director, but I at least think with Nolan that having the basis of a true story at the heart of the script will make him stop trying to remake inception - Dunkirk had a similar effect.

I'm doing the exact same strategy. Saturday the 22nd I'm in Operation Barbenheimer from 3:45 until 10pm.

The funny thing is is that I usually don't let myself fall for the marketing, but in this case I can see myself going down the pitfall purely for the meme. It's like buying the Grimace shake (didn't do that one) because of the trend, the only one winning there is McDonalds but we get that dopamine boost for following the meme. I wouldn't watch Barbie at all were it not for the Barbenheimer meme, and I probably wouldn't see Oppenheimer opening day either, but here I am. Crazy how the internet influences people like that.

I wouldn’t say he’s trying to remake Inception, more like he’s heavily inspired by the James Bond movies.

I haven't really watched too much James Bond, but I'm glad you said that because the more I think about it the more I think you're right. Hadn't considered the connection before!

A lot of the Bond films are great though. I’d recommend them.

I never have been someone buying movie tickets in advance, and also have never cared about seeing a movie on opening day - and I’m in the demographic that Hollywood assumes would be this way - so it is shocking even to me that I bought tickets in advance for Mission Impossible (opening day, IMAX), Barbie (opening day), Oppenheimer (two days after opening day because I’m on deck for something I can’t cancel Thursday eve/IMAX).

Idk if I’d want to see Barbie and Oppenheimer back to back … going to Oppenheimer after being all happy after Barbie? Going to Barbie after the grimness of Oppenheimer? Emotionally that’s a lot!
