I feel like you could take any random script about a bunch of special forces guys saving the world, and slap the Call of Duty logo on it.
Had the same thought. How is this not just going to be a generic action/war movie? Just with a pre-determined title and character names.
Hate to defend COD in any way but at least Black Ops 1 had an interesting enough story. COD 1-3 would just be Saving Private Brothers and COD MW would mostly be standard action movie faire...
The cowards should allow Spacey to reprise his Advanced Warfare role or, even better, live action Ghosts.
Considering that none other than Folding Ideas, Mr. "Video Essay So Good It Killed NFT Hype" himself, just made a video about the Ghosts storyline, it'd be really funny timing to reveal a Ghosts movie.
After recently watching Ahoy's video about COD4 that detailed the history of the franchise, this is a hilarious full-circle moment. Medal of Honor cribbed off Saving Private Ryan. CoD was off-brand Medal of Honor when it was new. Now a CoD movie?
I can't imagine it'll be any good given that the modern games are creatively bankrupt and CoD doesn't really have a consistent plot or setting like other game franchises.
It depends on what they focus on. CoD 1-4 were highly narrative driven games, and there's still many memorable characters in the now super old millennial generation who grew up with characters like Soap and Price so you get some nostalgia points.
There's also some novelty, since both WW2 and the early 2000s/Tom Clancy-esque war genre has cycled out, so it's now new again.
I wouldn't rule it out. Video game adaptations have been doing well, from Last of Us to Minecraft.
I mean, if they work in a clip of Ramirez being told to do everything, it'd definitely get a chuckle out of me. :D
In the corner of the room, the dusty and ignored screenplay for Red Storm Rising raises its head up off the table with a hopeful look
I’ll preface this by saying I don’t play video games and my knowledge of this series goes back over 10 years ago. I remember playing the Modern Warfare games and the Black Ops. I think there’s enough story in both for a film adaptation to work feasibly well. I only really remember the No Russians moment in Modern Warfare 2.
Also, you can do a Zombies movie.
After what Paramount did to my boy Master Chief, I have the lowest expectations.
Unless this is about people who play Call of Duty, how will that be any different from a variety of war movies?
That's the same issue of the Uncharted film. What's the point of adapting a highly generic, derivative IP?
The point is money, of course. And probably the only one.
Does it really need to matter?
My wife and I enjoyed the uncharted movie. It was fun and utterly forgettable. I didn't expect anything less.
I suppose there's nothing egregious about making a generic fun movie. We may sometimes question those deals but that doesn't mean they can't be fun for someone.
