Adapted by the Wachowskis (of Matrix fame) from Alan Moore's 1982/1983 graphic novel, V for Vendetta warns of a near-future totalitarian regime- a police state in the year 2020, reeling from a world-wide virus (prescient?) which has left most of America dead, and which relies on surveillance and violence to crush protest and dissent.

On the 20-year anniversary of the film's release, on the 5th of November (remember, remember), it has been announced that on the same date in 2026 the film will re-enter theatres. Perhaps, given the current UK government's approach to political protest and the growing paradigm of distrust, combined with an exponential growth in surveillance and a rightward swing in the politics of the UK, the EU, the Americas, and further afield, it is even more relevant today than it was on release?

Either way, it's a rather enjoyable film with a great cast including Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Stephen Rea, Roger Allam, Stephen Fry, and John Hurt (rest in peace). If I can, I'd love to catch it in the cinemas and watch it on the big screen.

I've been watching this film for years, and I had no idea that it was by the Wachowskis!

Unfortunately, this release date will be 2 days after Election Day in the US.

It was just 1 day after FWIW. But if we were gonna stop because Hugo Weaving told us to, we might have listened 20 years ago. Edit: I can't read and it's coming out next year

I'm torn between really wanting to see this in theaters (I missed the chance when it first came out) and being worried it's going to hit a little too close to home. Things aren't quite so bad in the US as the UK in the film, but my mind did immediately go to Stephen Fry's character when all the shit with Kimmel was going down.

Oh no we're certainly worse off than the EU is today. But we're also not quite at the point of the fictionalized version of the UK from that movie. Perhaps well on our way, but certainly not there...

Perhaps well on our way, but certainly not there (or worse) yet. Kimmel wasn't beaten, kidnapped, and disappeared, after all. Just kind of unemployed for a few weeks.

In other news, I have given up on seeing anything in theaters (or seeing bands play live unless I can pay cash to a venue that doesn't presell anything) but I may make an appearance for this, as I never did see it on the big screen.

Rewatched this on the 5th. Would be really cool to see it in theatres, because yea the message is more important than ever that governments exist to serve the population and not the other way around

I will not be surprised if some pandering right wing politicians claim it is anti-trump propaganda "from da leFT"

Think I'll watch this in theaters on 11/5/2026. Depending on how I feel afterward maybe I'll buy some bottles, gasoline, and storm matches. Purely for recreational purposes of course.
