Does anyone actually want to see this? Am I going to eat my words when this makes two billion dollars?

Minions though has done really well. I never thought that would have turned out to be that successful.

Just because something makes a buttload of money doesn't mean it's any good

How they keep milking this property is beyond me, but I guess it makes some people happy? I've never heard anything negative about anything past the second movie (which I saw in theaters, to my grandfathers disgust after seeing it), so that's something.

It’s funny because Shrek was notable to me as a great example of new IP in a field (fairy tales) that’s been under heavy reuse since the beginning of cinema.

Honestly they're not bad movies, in particular I love 2 more than even 1. But they're hardly innovative anymore, eh, the irreverent fairy tale comedy is by now a firmly established genre, which somewhat defeats the original goal as parody. Kinda sad to see something mold breaking become its own cookie cutter.

That's kind of how all parodies go. If they're good, they become the mainstream, and thus lose the ability to poke fun at the mainstream.

Yeah, it is interesting that something that was made as a way to parody nostalgic Disney movies is now its own nostalgia movie.

Even before Shrek, the irreverent fairy tale thing had already been done by the Fractured Fairy Tales segments from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show back in the 60's.

...You know, weirdly enough this somehow feels like it could have better potential than Shrek 5, at least. As far as comic relief characters go, Donkey feels actually fairly solid and capable of standing on his own without Shrek as a direct foil. Just need to have the right surrounding cast for him to play off of.

I guess Puss in Boots did well enough that they believe Donkey should finally get a turn. I still don't know who it's for, though. Are there enough kids who grew up fond enough of the Shrek IP and have kids or are enough like a Disney Adult to keep this thing floating and bringing in money? Are Dreamworks Adults a thing?

Why in the world would they do this now, and not in like 2005?
