What have you been listening to this week?

Looks like it's been about a week since @Flashynuff's post, so I figured I would make one for this week. As seems to be tradition, I'm going to borrow @Whom's description :)

What have you been listening to this week? You don't need to do a 6000 word review if you don't want to, but please write something!

Feel free to give recs or dicuss anything about each others' listening habits.

You can make a chart if you use last.fm:

I usually go on big kicks of the same artist(s), so recently it's been Maladroit by Weezer, and S.C.I.E.N.C.E. by Incubus. Maladroit is a really unfortunately overlooked album by Weezer and is full of short and sweet songs with nice heavy riffs and hooks. Space Rock and Burndt Jamb rock. S.C.I.E.N.C.E is a 90's classic that is just so far out there that I've never been able to find anything else like it. Harsh but great vocals, fantastic guitar, and kick ass bass. Seriously, pay attention to that bass. That's what I wanna be able to play. New Skin and Glass are great tracks off that album

I'm listening to Nat King Cole's rendition of Stardust. As well as Marian Hill's new collection and vintage Steely Dan's Aja.

Huge fan of both Nat King Cole and SD's Aja. Damn good choices and reminds me to continue to listen to the music I haven't heard in a while.

    3x3

Kanye West - 808s & Heartbreak - My new favorite Kanye album.

The Pillow - Runners High and Happy Bivouac - I watched FLCL and it made me want to listen to them way too much

Lycia - Cold - It's like moody dream pop/shoegaze that kind of reminds me of stuff like The Cure.

Not sure if you've heard (or if you're in the US or not) but The Pillows are doing a small US tour with Noodles again. I'll be seeing them for the second time in NYC in November!

One of my friends has been getting really into sea shanties lately. While I don't entirely get the appeal, it's definitely a very interesting style of music.

The Blue Album is first, and was an incredible debut. Catchy singles and the other tracks are great. Weezer was a big deal.

Then they released Pinkerton, which Rolling Stone called the worst album of the year (they later re-reviewed the album). It's different, but still really good. But due in part to the terrible reception Pinkerton got, Weezer went on hiatus and one of the founding members left for good (Matt Sharpe - check out the Rentals).

Anyway, after some time, Weezer came back with the Green Album. At this point, a lot of people bailed on them. But I personally like the Green Album, and enjoyed the subsequent releases.

But then they started releasing stuff really frequently, and I got older and busier with life stuff, and haven't kept up. So I can't comment on their newer stuff. The last single I listened to had a very weird rap break, and I hated it.

This comment got away from me, sorry. The point is, start with the Blue Album and have fun!

Not sure if this will be the obvious answer but the new Kanye album has been bumping in my car since it was released. I'm not in love with every song but a couple of them are just amazing to me.

A Place to Bury Strangers - Pinned has been getting heavy rotation for me this week; really looking forward to the live show later this month.

I'm also going to be seeing CHON/TTNG/Tricot/Polyphia on Thursday night, so I've been listening to them quite a bit too. Related, but I've also been playing Mouse On The Keys' new album on YouTube on repeat.

I made a small dent in a big stack of CDs over the weekend. I bought all of these months ago ...

    • Spottiswoode and His Enemies - Wild Goosechase Expedition (great eclectic indie band from NYC)
    • Lucky Peterson - Black Midnight Sun (interesting funky blues album. Produced by Bill Laswell with P-Funk's Jerome "Bigfoot" Brailey on drums and Henry Threadgill on flute)
    • Los Straitjackets - Jet Set (awesome surf rock band. They have been around forever but I never got around to them before)
    • Buddy Guy - Sweet Tea (heavy, swampy blues album from one of the masters)

Also caught a great set last night at the Jazz Standard in NYC: Joey DeFrancesco on organ and trumpet, Mark Whitfield on guitar and Lenny White on drums. All three of these guys are monsters on their instruments and they were GOING FOR IT right from the first note. Super sick show.

Pretty much just the new AM album, Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, which is excellent. If anyone heard it and didn't think much of it, keep listening to it. Get better each time I hear it.

Been listening to a smaller rock/pop band called Shiffley. Learned about them after seeing them live at a friend's concert. They've been making my drive to work pretty enjoyable!

I was listening to some podcasts on the way to work (Python Bytes), Pendulum, The Prodigy, Brennan Heart, Zatox, Headhunterz, and Da Tweekaz. And then some Fall Out Boy on the drive home.

I also really enjoyed FATE: A Tribute to Majora's Mask over the weekend, and I'm sure I'll give it a couple more plays in the future.

These are my top albums as of late:

Maps and Atlases - Lightlessness is Nothing New
I've been hooked on these guys for the past couple months, and this just came out last week.

Hot Chip - In Our Heads
Ever since I first heard it, this album has always been the soundtrack to the beginning of summer for me.

    Eldren - Welcome to Deathville
It's a fun, quirky album from a local band that I recently got introduced to.

Cosmo Sheldrake - The Much Much How How and I
Very Andrew Bird-esque music, just with a trippier feel to it.
