“It’s interesting how ‘any time, any place’ becomes ‘one specific time, one specific safe space,’” Harris posted.

UPDATE: evidently, you need to create a (free) account with WaPo to read the article. Sorry, folks. 🙄.

There's always archive.is to view it for "free". 🙈

Trump wants to do the Fox News debate with a full arena audience, which sounds awful for democracy but fucking awesome for entertainment.

Yeah, it sounds like it’ll be a fox sponsored Trump rally. I really doubt there will be many undecided in that crowd.

I'm seeing a very highly numerous and consistent message being pushed that Trump agreed to debate Biden, not Kamala so Trump isn't really backing out of this. One of my local news stations tweeted their article covering Trump backing out and it got 45 replies as of a couple hours ago, mostly from people parroting this message. I don't recall other Trump news, even the most polarizing getting more than about a dozen replies in the past

A debate isn't about setting one party up to win in advance. It's to give both parties equal opportunity to make their argument. Trump just wants a rigged game.

Didn't agree to debate Harris? He agreed to debate the presumptive Democratic candidate who was, at the time, Biden. That he doesn't like that he's debating Harris? It makes him look, at best, like a petulant child.

Excellent point, and I think it rather illuminating on just how Trump thinks about politics. For him it's not about institutions or platforms, it's about personality. It was supposed to be him and Biden trading barbs, not the Republican and Democratic candidates laying out their campaign messages. That's because Trump doesn't represent the GOP, which is why they were scared shitless of him when it first started to look like he'd get the 2016 nomination. No, according to Trump the GOP is supposed to represent him.

The Athenians had a policy for when men started making the business of government about their own good instead of the good of the polis. They'd hold a secret ballot and choose one man among them who was an aspiring tyrant, or who they thought most threatened the state, and that man was banished from Athens for 10 years. It's where the word 'ostracism' comes from. Of course it wasn't a perfect policy, and was used in politically fuckery as often as not, but I admit the thought seems appealing now.

I wish the American people can vote to ostracize one politician or super rich person every year. Good to make sure you're never the worst behaving person in the country every year

That's a specious argument though, right? That line just makes him seem (more) petty and weak to me, how does one spin that into a positive message for Trump?

Yeah I'm not claiming it makes sense. They almost seem to be implying they want Biden to still get up there and debate even though he dropped out.

Debate scheduling seems like a very crude game of chicken. Obviously both Harris and Trump have certain conditions they’d prefer (venue, dates, auto muting of mics…) so they haggle over that. It’s not a positive message for Trump, but when they take the next step in negotiations, he probably hopes framing things as a restart gives him some advantage. Like I said, it’s crude, so it probably depends on the actual negotiators and their personal weaknesses, and not any bullet proof logic.

But this comment thread prompted me to find its new home on Github and install the current version. Verified it works on WaPo.

FWIW I was suspicious of whether the new repo is maintained by the same person, because add-ons like this are inherently risky. The old version I still had installed linked to this Xitter page which confirms authenticity of the new repo.
