I've been seeing the term "fragging" make the rounds, wonder if that's gonna be a thing

Can confirm. I propose only people over 75 should be able to join the Army now.

Honestly... ya. I know I didn't take things seriously enough in my late teens and early 20's. I'm not as fast as a 20 year old me but I definitely make better decisions especially under pressure....

A RAND Corporation report found that older recruits “score higher on enlistment qualification tests than those who join before age 20, have attained higher levels of education or have greater life experience and, once in service, are more likely than younger recruits to reenlist and to be promoted.”

42 years old to START a military career in the Army though... damn.

About a decade ago, my younger brother joined the Army National Guard when he was in mid/late-20s. Unfortunately (or fortunately, which is how he views it), when he finally got to boot camp, he got some awful skin condition. So they sent him home after a couple weeks in medical limbo and he eventually got himself discharged from the military. Though technically, since he never completed boot camp, he was never in the military.

Either way, I thought joining at his age then was wild. When he got to MEPS and boot camp, he was pretty much the oldest person in his company or whatever. And he was like "they're all just kids who don't know anything about anything!" Like yeah man. That's what an 18yo is. Don't you remember?

He did mention that he was treated differently, maybe even slightly better than the "kids," which he chalked up to being older. Because he knew how to advocate for himself and all that. There were other people in medical limbo who had been there for several weeks already. He got sent home before them because he kept pushing.

On the other hand, I could see becoming an officer at an older age. I could see that being helpful. I've met some junior officers who direct commissioned in their late 20s or even their 30s. I think it's crazy that college grads get commissioned.

But becoming enlisted? And in one's 40s? Idk about all that. You couldn't pay me enough to do that. They couldn't pay me enough to do when I was 18yo!

When I was 18 I would have never considered it. At my current age I would not consider it because I have a family to support but at my current age I could understand joining for a serious cause. A serious cause would be something like my home country being invaded though... I can't imagine joining for a foreign conflict.

If there was some kind of transfer to get similar pay and job type from private industry to the military at age 40 I would maybe consider it. Could be interesting (if not for current commander in chief). I could even deal with hanging out at basic training with a bunch of 18 year olds for a few weeks (months? I know nothing). But it seems like you start at the bottom no matter what, not sure how many 40 year olds want to take an 80% pay cut to enlist.

You wish think there would be exceptions for people with particular skills. Like a professional electrician, software developer, mechanic — they would be able to skip so much specialty training.

That would still allow you to retire younger than you can to get social security.

Two typos in one sentence? What is going on over at the hill?

The document also outlines that prospective recrutis do no need to secure a waiver

Illiteracy and over reliance on AI, is my guess.

AI usually doesn't make typos though. I thought that was one of the things it was really good at?

I recently saw AI mistype "experience" as "experienze" so ... it's possible.

This is one way that AI will respond if you naively prompt it to “humanize” the text so that it beats GPT detectors. Not saying that’s what happened here, but don’t rely on typos as a good signal.
