What did you do this week (and weekend)?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
I drove 2-5 hours and flew 7 to go have birthday dinner with my dad, then got on another pair of planes and now I'm on my last 2-5 hours drive home. Pretty tired and looking forward to the bed at home. Was nice to surprise him though :)
Suggestion:
Change the title of this recurring thread to:
or
Break the recurring thread into two separate recurring threads, both on Friday:
Maybe run a variation of #2, but on Monday : "What did you do this weekend?"
Happy Friday
Yeah, I like that idea for a title change.
Also, a bit of trivia:
Okay wow that's actually a lot of trivia
There actually used to be separate topics for the week and weekend, but on June-10-2022 the first combined version was posted:
https://tildes.net/~talk/11ke/what_did_you_do_this_week_and_weekend
https://tildes.net/~talk?tag=recurring&per_page=100&after=11ng
I don't actually know why the series was consolidated into a single topic. I never asked, or I forgot, but it was probably because the series wasn't getting many responses at the time. (This is one of the oldest recurring topics on the site, and its activity has always been sporadic.)
The first "official" version of these recurring topics was posted on October-11-2019 as the "weekend topic":
https://tildes.net/~talk/icq/what_are_you_doing_this_weekend
And the first "official" version of the "week topic" came three days later:
https://tildes.net/~talk/ifo/what_are_you_doing_this_week
Prior to being automatically generated by the site, this series was posted manually for about six months, with the very first topic being posted on March-16-2019:
https://tildes.net/~talk/beh/what_are_you_doing_this_weekend
And the very first "week topic" was manually posted on June-03-2019:
https://tildes.net/~talk/e2d/what_are_you_doing_this_week
The What are you doing this weekend? tradition on Lobsters inspired these topics on Tildes. Here's the text from the very first (now deleted) topic in the series:
3 day weekend because Veterans Day on Monday. Woot. No, I'm not a veteran, but I work for the govt, so I get it off.
Didn't do a whole lot outside of the norm this week. I do need to try some couches at furniture stores this weekend. I am currently couchless, and have been for last couple months. Which is a bit annoying. When I moved, I threw away the couches I previously had. Things were like as old as I am. Like my parents got them when we as a family moved like 35yrs ago. So it was time to let them go. Unfortunately, I've been lazy about actually looking at couches.
Planning on trying 2 or 3 more games for the Tildes Backlog Burner thing. Not sure which games from my backlog I'll try. I have a list of like ~20 games I preselected for this.
Other than that, just trying to stay positive. It's been a tough week for obvious reasons, but just trying to keep looking forward and doing what I need to do.
Oh, is veteran's Day (Nov 11, Canadian remembrance day right?) not a stat holiday for all workers and kids?
One thing I do miss about being in a city is the Craigslist free stuff. There's always someone trying to get rid of a free couch must pick up before today kind of thing.
It's a federal holiday at least. Idk about that various states. Workwise, this is the the first time I'm getting the day off, as I recently joined the federal government. It's been so long since I've been in school, and I have no kids, so I can't remember if schools are closed.
I could Craigslist or FB Market it, but I think I'm a little grossed out about using someone's old couch. Like the ones I had were at least our family's, so whatever. But someone else's? Idk. Besides, I've never purchased a brand new couch, so perhaps this is the time to do so. I'll prob own this one for a couple decades as well!
New furniture is pretty darn exciting and yeah at some point we can afford to not have free furniture anymore hahaha
I'm excited for your new cough!! So many memories will be made!
Tuesday evening we had a game night with family and friends, playing a few games of Sushi Go after dinner and dessert. I was pretty tired after cooking and just the general wear of the day, so I didn't engage too extensively, but did end-up playing the second game of Sushi Go.
Wednesday night I got very drunk at home and tried to play more Dead Space Remake with my wife, which was partially successful, but the game crashed, so my wife and I decided to call it a night.
Thursday we went to a friends house for dinner and a general hangout. It was nice to hang out and have some exclusive time with them, especially considering they're about to be new parents, so my wife and I get to share some of the things we've learned over the course of two children.
Tonight, my wife and I will probably play some more Dead Space and maybe I can convince her to pick-up our watch of Star Trek TNG. We left off somewhere in Season 4, so I need to figure out the last episode we watched.
Saturday I have a buddy coming over and we're going to start our first game of our new Warhammer 40k Crusade, so that'll be a day of bullshitting and drinking beer. Though funny, since I got my friends all hyped to play 40k again (it's been a couple of years for us) and I've been painting my small force, I'm actually starting to feel much more interested in playing my World War 2 games and painting my soldiers again. I'm going to try and maintain enthusiasm for 40k right now though, as I did get my friends excited about it and we all spent a bunch of money on new stuff for it.
I've also been watching TNG! Before starting it I did not realize how popular it was, and then I started seeing everyone talk about it.
Not much through the week if I'm being honest. Weekly session of D&D was about as exciting as it got, although I'm the DM for the campaign and it's great to the see the players really get into it, especially now they're in the last third of the campaign.
I'm currently on the way to Glasgow to go to a Q&A with Jeff VanderMeer on his book tour for Absolution, the newest book in the Southern Reach series. Hoping we'll be able get our book signed so I've brought my copy with me.
Sunday we're taking our daughter to the transport museum through in Glasgow to catch up with my brother. Been years since I was last there so it'll be cool to go back.
Saturdays just gonna be a chill out day though, maybe get some stuff done round the house.
Last week's test ride was a success, even if it was rainy and windy almost the entire way there and back. I think I've got all the necessities dialed in for my 400 mile/8 hour ride to Arkansas for Thanksgiving.
I would still like to get some sort of navigation rig set up, but everything is so expensive. I don't want to spend $200 on a special phone case, mounting hardware, and "stabilizer module" just so I can attach my phone to my handlebars and not destroy its camera on a long ride.
I thought about buying a cheaper phone mount, or even printing/fabricating my own, but the vibration-destroys-iPhone-cameras issue remains. I do have my old Android phone. I probably won't ever need its camera again, so could mount it to the handlebars instead, and just hotspot it to my iPhone inside my jacket pocket. The Android phone isn't waterproof though...
I'll probably just keep doing what I've been doing: studying maps, memorizing directions, and paying attention to signs like its 1955. Honestly, travelling like that is funner anyways.
Have you considered buying an atlas and cutting out the pages for the states you need?
I've got maps of Texas and the surrounding states downloaded to my phone, so if I need to stop and check directions, I can usually just do that. Having a paper map as a backup is a good idea though. Do you have a recommendation for an atlas?
Apparently, the Department of the Interior used to publish an official USA atlas, but its last release was in 1997, and it was discontinued in 2013.
I could download OpenStreetMap data and use that.
I even know someone who has access to a giant-sheet-of-paper-printer that would work great for a big ass map, but I'd like something waterproof and durable-ish.
I wonder if they have a way to laminate those giant sheets? Or maybe someone else does?
But if I laminate it, will it still fold up?
New quest unlocked!
My dad used to always get these before navigation tech was a thing (Garmin etc), easily found at truck stops back in the day.

As there are large format printers, there are also large format laminators....they are an absolute pain to operate, and probably somewhat expensive as a service for a one off job.
Another option would be to cut up the atlas pages into smaller rectangles, laminate them together as one sheet but with small gaps for folds between each rectangular section, then score the laminate on the opposite side of each fold's direction. Then you'd have an entire state map that you could fold into a pocket sized shape.
Also, since I like motorcycles, Rev'it makes nice jackets that don't look obviously motorcycly, and Pando Moto has some nice looking gloves. Not a fan of Rev'it shoes though, bought a pair and the soles came off within 4 months, had to get them stitched on by a legit shoemaker.
Here's a potential solution for waterproof, durable maps: https://mapstore.mytopo.com/
I've used waterproof paper for hiking maps, but DIY printing or copier shop output tends to smear and otherwise be less than optimal.
Like many, I had a really tough week. But Thursday we got a bunch of unexpected snow, and my husky-whippet was the happiest dog on the planet, so that was awesome.
I finished watching the Fallout TV series. I've never played the games myself but I've apparently absorbed quite a bit of the worldbuilding from the people I know who have, so it was a lot of fun to recognize various concepts. On the whole I enjoyed it, although I have some questions. Glad to hear it's coming back for a season 2, although apparently the first season had something like two years post-production, so it might not be any time soon.

Apparently extreme capitalism goes like this:
I have to say that finishing it out this week felt particularly pointed and kind of soured things a bit.
