I'm going, I guess. This *gestures around wildly at the state of the world* isn't looking so hot and I'm not really sure where my career will be in a few years because of AI, but I guess I'm going. Hopefully getting a job offer later today at a new company but I looked on glassdoor and the reviews mentioned a bunch of layoffs last year that I didn't know about so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My company laid a decent amount of people off in December so I guess it's not too different anyways, but I hope I like it (if they give me an offer and I accept it). I've never changed jobs before (well, since high school working retail), so it's kinda scary.

E: I got the job! A massive pay increase and it's fully remote, which I've really been looking for (I loved it during Covid and felt way more productive, or, I at least forced myself to be more productive at home than now when I'm hybrid). I'm still kind of scared and maybe I messed up because the recruiter said "so what do you think, are you in?" and I was prepared to definitively say yes or no during that call so I said "I think so, yeah" and then she basically asked again and I was like "well it sounds great". Anyways, I'm probably over thinking most of this and the team/manager seemed great during interviews, it's just scary leaving a job you know to one you don't!

Good luck on the hopefully-coming-job-offer! The job market is definitely tough out there with everything going on, plus all of the AI impacts.

Good luck, friend! It's weird to more or less know your job category will likely cease to exist in a few years due to AI. Like being on a moving train you know will crash at some point in the not too distant future, but you can't really get off of it either. I keep having these minor panic addicts and the urge to start working on some sort of switch to secure my future, but I've been doing what I do for almost 30 years now and still love it. I'm not sure I'm capable of doing anything else. So then I push the thought away until the next AI doom article. Sorry for rambling, let us know if you got the job!

I've been pretty out of touch recently, and it's probably somewhat good for me. We're getting a vegetable garden started and working on planning out the landscape for our backyard (which is bare dirt aside from a section of artificial turf and a weird but cute moss fairy garden area by the previous owners). This process, and general housekeeping, and my other hobby of doing my nails, are keeping me busy. The nail hobby is going pretty well too.

The nails actually seem to be holding up okay with regular (light leather) gardening gloves. They have some utility, too, with sewing seeds and some delicate work separating seedlings. Much to my amazement, they trap WAY less dirt than short nails. I just have to be careful working around a preexisting, not-gardening-related break, which I have to keep gluing together. I moved 500 pounds of pavers for the base to our raised bed with no problems!

Amount of light increasing, so it's getting pretty good. Also decided to get a cat or two. And my youngest child got his first belt graduation in a martial art. Overall pretty good.

two months ago i decided to redo my wardrobe according to the kibbe system for men… not a lot on it, but i’m flamboyant natural.

my focus is good quality used pieces, but i do have some new things (like a full polo print orange RL button up) — it’s been fun. i’m around 75% done. being 6’4” and 175lbs, it can be a challenge to get the right fit; but it’s gone well. everything gets tucked in; i’m mostly focused on textured fabrics for the top and then accent with socks in brown brogues. more shoes to come, but i’m going leather across the board for footwear. i used to only wear either black boots or brown leather onitsuka tiger mexico 66s. detailed brogues are so much nicer.

anyway, having some side bullshit to do when i’m out doing other stuff has been really rewarding. it’s also fun to talk fashion with folks shopping or running the stores.

it’s nice to get compliments from randos, too. i wish more people gave out compliments on clothing and other choices. i do it a lot, so maybe it’s a karmic system.

Across your shirts, pants, and shoes, which were the closest in style to where you are now headed? Or did you basically start from scratch with everything?

i pretty much started from scratch outside of a bunch of white t’s, plaid pearl snapped button ups, and a couple henleys.

i didn’t really think the system would work as well as it did, but it all feels more-right and i wish i had discovered this ages ago. :)

you’ll get a few celebs that are your type — once you have that you can more easily narrow down the outfits and stuff. if you’re redoing your wardrobe, focus on standards / essentials that all work well with each other, then try to find the standout pieces to bring all of that together. for me, the order i went in was shirts, pants, shoes and socks, jacket, accessories (chains, more watches…)

don’t shy away from trying on a lot of clothes at posh stores to get the right ideas. :)

A little annoyed with work recently. The organization is trying to pigeonhole me into a role I don't want or ever applied for. My previous team got split up when my leader left a year back, and now under the new team they seem to want me to do things I am really not interested in nor an expert in. I feel a bit "first world problems" in the sense that I should be grateful I have a job and they trust me enough to give me these new tasks. But after a year of this, another part of me feels like I've just been "Mr. Nice Guy" who just says yes in spite of my own desires and aspirations, just because "someone's gotta do it". I've started bringing this up with my current leader and they seem supportive to help change things for me. Time will tell if it will actually happen.

I'm not coping, nor is my support system, and the problems keep piling up. No one thing is catastrophic, but it's a real death by a thousand cuts.

Broadly pretty good. 2 year old is thriving and learning how to deal with bullies (well, at that age they're all bullies). Heavier than I'd like to be -- likely because there's no time to exercise. That said, apparently 60% of my country are overweight so I don't feel too bad?

Focused on the news cycle and knowing what's going on in this wild world, but thankfully I'm able to compartmentalize the bad, stay hopeful for the good and know that history has a way of serving up shitty cycles.

Lastly, I'm way too addicted to playing Fortnite with my other over 40 friends. The shit is addictive and we're all hooked. The thing is, there's no energy for anything else after 8 pm.

I'm in a mild slump at the moment but this should pass fairly soon.

Part of it is just from social media, it's very easy to be dragged into a downward spiral through it. With the conflicts in the middle east, AI taking over software engineering, and more, it's hard not to also feel down.

Part of it is personal, as my parents are moving and it's an adjustment for both them and me. I had found it comforting to be able to go home when I felt like it since they were only a single train ride away but now they're a flight away so I'll be seeing them less. It's not something I haven't adjusted to before but it's something I have to adjust to again.

Part of it is professional. Now that I've completed ~6 months at my new job, I have to begin operating at a higher level than I ever have before. My company has "time-in-level" requirements where you have to get promoted within X amount of months depending on if you're a junior or mid-level engineer. I've got plenty of time for this but it's something that always lurks in the back of my mind. My previous company also had a similar system and I never got promoted within the 24 months I had. I wasn't fired but it made promotion feel even more impossible to get, which is part of the reason why I left.

However, through all this, I've continued to close at least the move ring on my Apple Watch for ~70 days continuously which is cool. I'm hoping to start biking around my city more often too to get some cardio in.

Light in the northern hemisphere is a big one. I'm so happy to see the sun again! Its going to hit 70F here and I am so stoke to sweat my ass off on a nice long run. The rest of the world kind of sucks and my coping method is basically just shut out the noise if I can. Focus on things I enjoy and what I can change.

New Harry Styles album is pretty good, not even a fan but the algorithm pulled me there.

Friends are having an engagement party this week and I'm out next week for a bachelor party. Things certainly could be worse but I'm taking my W's where I can get them and hoping/helping anyone else I can.

I hope anyone reading this is having a good day and if not, I hope it gets better.

Still not feeling great. Caught an illness and I've had a sore throat since last night along with really itchy and watery eyes. It could be an allergy or something could have ended up stuck in my eye.

I've gone back into the process of applying for jobs but all I've had so far is radio silence. Recruiters aren't putting me forward for any roles, and as much as I don't regret quitting my last position which was in Cheltenham, it's still disheartening that I cannot find a job in Bristol. That situation may be changing though.

    1. My former boss from several years has finally started advertising her practice on socials (they've been running for the past five years) and part of me thinks that this is a push to get more clients and potentially expand the team again. I would definitely work for her again in a heartbeat.

    2. I have been through two interview stages and an Excel assessment (finished 3 mins late and with two wrong answers out of ten) with a security consultancy firm. If by some miracle I make it through this stage, I'll be going for an interview in-person. Working in an office-based role doesn't really bother me, I've found working from home to be an increasingly big headache because of my dad.

Other than that, I'm really concerned about a relatively close friend of mine. She has CFS/ME and her condition has been getting worse going from mild to moderate. She's also had constant headaches and has found herself getting increasingly and intensely angry at things, and is concerned that there is something seriously wrong with her, like a brain tumour.
