Lots of reduced activity it seems. Just the weekend?
Seems as though that "initial" wave of users is dying off when a lot of invites went out. Or is it just the weekend and everyone is busy?

Weekend, mostly. But I think we need a place to shit-post and blow off steam, we as a community take discussion seriously but I have read peoples comments that were meant to be lighthearted and fun but I have seen them as serious and have contributed to taking the conversation in a direction that OP didn't mean at all. Which in the ends leaves a bad taste in everyones mouth.
I try to make thoughtful comments and in-depths responses, but sometimes we need to just make stupid inane/inside jokes that only the other people here get. By not doing this we fail at creating understanding, at making community, and at allowing us to enjoy being human together.
I agree with this a lot. While it's really refreshing to have a board that has more careful and serious discussion, I imagine the sheer density of that seriousness puts some people off of posting as often as they might on other sites. Some of the best memories I have of the forums I've been into in the past as well were from being able to goof around and make friends like that.
That is something that's been on my mind for a while now. I feel like if we value long form discussion and discourage short form anything, then everyone strives to sound more and more pretentious, or just take longer to say things that could be put more simply. It becomes a chore to post on here, because it feels like you need to do research and draw up a rough draft before you can comment. It's too serious around here, man. Everyone's going crazy and stirring up all kinds of drama because what else can we do around here? We can't crack jokes to let off steam/detach from serious issues. It's a madhouse here sometimes
perhaps we need "~anything_goes" or something similar.
Seems like that's the purpose of ~talk, but not really the direction it's going in right now. Maybe we need a separate group for totally casual talk as you suggest.
~talk was a bit more casual and freeform for a while, but there was a bit of conflict over if it was high quality enough for the site. Personally, I thought it was all a bit silly and that blocking off that kind of content encourages things like off-site chats for no real benefit.
I'd say just post it in talk and nobody would care, tag it as casual and that would lead to ~talk.casual right? which sounds like exactly what is wanted.
That seems like the natural progression of using tags in talk. I think we should keep an eye on the tag so it doesn't overtake the rest of the site, but I don't see anything wrong with posting casual things in a place for talking casually.
Enter ~HighQualityGifs :)
But call it ~HigherQualityGifs as a jab at reddit.
Yes please.
And matrix, and IRC :D
I posted one and I'm drained! (Also, work's been horrible.)
I promise to post more nice things instead.
I have noticed that the weekends are generally slower. Personally I'm mostly active while I'm at work during the week. I'm either out and about on the weekends, or working on a project keeping me away from my PC.
Yeah same. The demographic of Tildes is probably older than Reddit for example and a lot of us have family and friends obligations. Not to mention summer is ending for most of the people here. I know I'm only really idle long enough for lots of posting when it's slow at work otherwise I'm out doing something.
Weekends are always slower, I think overall the volume of comments/topics on the weekend is usually about half of what it is on weekdays, sometimes even lower. I haven't looked at the activity stats lately, maybe I'll pull some out again later today.
I am commenting on tildes less than I used to because it seems that most threads these days are fairly political (even if they're ostensibly just news articles or magazine pieces) - and in general I either don't have a well considered opinion on the topic or I don't have the energy to wade into a debate. I still read it often though.
I think it comes and goes in waves. Some days have threads that see a lot of attention; some days don't. Without a visualization on comment totals, I think it's too hard for me to say much about trends except that it's lower than peak and higher than its valley.
In my case, I just got back from vacation and had a "working weekend" catching up on some issues that needed attention.
I've been very busy and tired, and I generally stay away from the internet during weekends (except maybe chat apps on my phone). Also I don't post very often, I prefer commenting and I only do that if I find something interesting and whatever I wanted to say hasn't been said yet.
I'm not really active, certainly not when it comes to actually making a new post, but this weekend I was moving in for fall semester at college. This could be the case for a few others. I might even have more time now that i'm done with summer work, but this weekend left with me very little.
I mostly use Tildes on public transport to work.
Maybe I'm not the only one.
