What did you do this week?
As part of a weekly series, these topics are a place for users to casually discuss the things they did — or didn't do — during their week. Did you accomplish any goals? Suffer a failure? Do nothing at all? Tell us about it!
My wife and I discovered Hipcamp and went camping in the middle of the week on some private property. It was managed by a local wildlife preserve, so it wasn't like we were just in someone's backyard-- more like one of those weird, gated-off areas you'd see on long stretches of forested road wondering "what's back there?" It was only an hour away-- we didn't want to stop anywhere, used the restroom before we left, and got our food/snacks on our prior grocery trip.
On the way out we got into more rural and rural areas, and sadly saw a lot of huge confederate flags, Trump/Pence signs with makeshift billboards reading "Make liberals cry again," bullet holes in the signs. So that was a little unnerving.
The campsite itself was clean, but less than 40 feet down a trail we'd found buckshot and some buried beer bottles and broken glass.
Not too far away was a river with small waterfalls that a few people were swimming in-- there was even a spot for them to climb up a little cliff beneath our campsite and dive in, which they did. It was weird, none of us had masks but they stayed distanced from one another, which didn't look too unusual given the spaciousness of nature. It was like a vignette of a pre-pandemic time.
At night a fat little mouse was all too brave and hung around our feet and chairs, eating our smores crumbs. When we shut off the light it eventually started scrambling up my leg, which scared the shit out of me as I must've flung it elsewhere. Didn't see the fella much after that.
When it was time to sleep, both of us and our stupid ears kept thinking we heard a variety of sounds (voices, footsteps, etc.) mixed in with the river sounds, but it was nothing/we slept/didn't see anyone else from dusk to dawn, or even when we left.
Not bad overall. It's been the only trip we've taken since March.
Ha! That's funny, I'm glad it didn't try to nibble on you. It just wanted to snuggle after you wined and dined it!
This is one of the harder parts about camping for me. You feel so vulnerable at night.
Do you happen to have a blog? I would love to vicariously experience more of your life.
Aw, thanks! I used to keep a blog back in the day but stopped for whatever reason. Lately I haven't had a blog 'cause it feels like most days would just be "I had soup, pooped a couple times, pet my cats, the end" but have been meaning to do it anyway. The only near-equivalent I'd had was a webcomic I put on pause a while back: https://dougwastaken.tumblr.com/
I managed to get quite a bit done. I had my intake appointment on Monday, and set up my first therapy appointment for the next Monday. I had my blood drawn on Wednesday, and sent the result to the endocrinologist who should write the report on my transition. I submitted my request for unemployment benefits on the same day, and then proceeded to sleep the Xanax off.
I also decided to go out and explore Milano a bit on Thursday - nearly had a panic attack at Porta Venezia - went to a library, got some LGBT pins, then a bar, almost had another panic attack, chatted with people, ate at a McDonalds past midnight, and got back home all in one piece.
I was low-key thinking about going back there later today, but there's a storm going on right now - the rain is hitting the blinds so hard it's actually going through them - and I don't have anything I could wear in this weather.
I hope your transition (continues to?) go well!
I good friend of mine is currently convalescing from bottom surgery, and she said she cried happy tears the first time she stood in front of a mirror, even though everything is still bandaged.
It goes. I'm just trying to get my documents fixed, but the judges here require an endocrinologist to sign off on the treatment having been "irreversible", and the 'rona really derailed my plans.
I usually ride out the summer heat but man, fuck this heat wave. Just installed two AC units and revived a third. It is now snowing in my living room. Next week and a half is supposed to be hot as hell with sweltering humidity. It's been years since a heat wave like this managed to happen in the northeastern usa.
I'm from Europe so no AC, it's not super hot yet (25-30C) but I already hate it. I'm looking at the meteo, it's all blue, it makes me depressed. When I walk outside I get in my head :
As of today:
The week went by pretty fast for me, but beyond work I ordered the last parts I need for my PC, some furniture, killed a lot of earwigs, and almost finished up a scene I'm drawing for Artfight! I'm looking to get through more this weekend, but Saturdays are pretty lazy for me hah.
