I honestly haven't done any Lemmy browsing specifically because I find all the UIs so janky. I dropped Reddit entirely so this could be the catalyst for me to actively switch.

I tried Lemmy but on my first comment I posted a factual comment was immediately downvoted. It was correcting the misconception that piracy of all types is legal in Canada but that only downloading music is a legally grey area where copying to media meant for music is legal. I just got that ick feeling from Reddit where downvoted were used as a disagree or don't like button. I don't think I'll be going back.
So you based your final judgement of the entire Lemmy community on the fact that a single comment was unfairly downvoted? Some Lemmy instances don't even allow downvotes...

I am so happy that there are no downvotes on Tildes. They are constantly used to express "I disagree" or "I don't like what you're saying" on Reddit, I'm sure that was never their purpose.

There are several Lemmy instances. Many are federated with each other, so that you can can interact across the "network." I'm on Beehaw.org, which doesn't even allow downvoting (though doesn't mean that those accessing Beehaw from other instances can't downvote). It might be worth trying to find an instance where discussion and other (reasonable) points of view are accepted. I know Beehaw recently defederated some Lemmy instances that were causing issues, to help better protect their community.
That said, my feeling so far on the Lemmyverse is that it is much closer to reddit than, say, Tildes. Even on Beehaw, I see similar comment types that I'd see on reddit.
If a comment on Beehaw gets downvoted from another instance, does it affect the sorting on the Beehaw instance, and/or other ones with disabled downvote buttons? Edit: Thinking about it, even if...

Edit: Thinking about it, even if it doesn't directly get affected by it, it does on the other instances with enabled downvote buttons. Their sorting would change the voting behavior and therefore also Beehaw's & Co.
I think it does. I went looking through comments in both Beehaw communities and non-Beehaw communities, via Beehaw, and it does seem like the score 0 comments are placed below. Interestingly, I've...

That said, highest voted posts aren't always at the tip-top. And I did see like scores of 2 above a 3. But that might be because my default comment view is "Hot" instead of "Top."
Just seems like way too much effort to go through a slew of special interest instances to try and find one that isn't going to devolve into the same toxic behaviour I left behind in Reddit for....

Pirates don't like having the moral high ground they have in their head questioned. Anything that goes against their world view that they are amazing for sticking it to the man gets a downvote.

To be clear, I pirate, I used to pirate more and I might start again in the future as streaming services are getting out of hand. But I have no misconceptions what I'm doing is not legal.

I paid full price for Sync Ultimate before, and I'll pay full price for Sync Ultimate again. Though I also admit, I've been enjoying Tildes quite a bit.

Such an incredibly short-sighted move by Reddit to aggressively push away 3rd-party devs, their users, and provide a catalyst for direct competitors to expand overnight. Steve Huffman called the 3rd-party devs competition when they were still serving up his content; I think it's going to be a rude awakening when he opens the app stores and sees Sync/Relay/Apollo for ActivityPub sites.
The irony of this whole situation is that Reddit saw third party apps as direct competitors and everyone on the apps as people who would use the official Reddit app if not a third party app. In...
The irony of this whole situation is that Reddit saw third party apps as direct competitors and everyone on the apps as people who would use the official Reddit app if not a third party app. In the process, they turned the third party apps into actual competitors! Pretty wild, it’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Sync is by far my favorite Reddit app, and one of my favorite Android apps of all time. The amount of UI customization, fit and finish, and little usability tweaks combine to make it so nice to use.

That's "just" a technical issue, though. I'd be surprised if the Beehaw admins don't make sure it gets resolved in the near future.

As far as quality of discussion is concerned, Tildes is closer to Metafilter. Lemmy is closer to Reddit.

If I use pirated software/music/whatever I'm a pirate?
So cool!
You're only a pirate if you're constantly singing this song
To be clear, I pirate, I used to pirate more and I might start again in the future as streaming services are getting out of hand. But I have no misconceptions what I'm doing is not legal.
Welcome to stremio. It's been a bliss.
I'm probably going to go the route of usenet/private trackers and build out a NAS at home.
I thought Kodi was perfection until I found Stremio.
Stremio + torrentio is a match made in heaven.

Guess I'm signing up for Lemmy and at least taking a peak.
I don't have any interest in Lemmy atm, but I'm glad the Sync guy is still able to develop for it. It's been my reddit app of choice for a while and he deserves better than how reddit is currently treating him
I used Sync for years, but honestly, I think I'll be sticking to Tildes.
I wish there were an Apollo for Lemmy, but last I heard Christian Selig wasn't feeling up to the task, which is understandable and I don't blame him. It's a bit unfortunate though because having a client with such a big name attached would drive a lot of adoption.
I think Spez is lucky Christian is not considering it.
Do you intend to build for iOS or just android?
