So you can see why they do the algorithm the way they do. People that consume this type of information fall down rabbit holes of misinformation. Be that climate, or anything else. They want to keep people on YouTube for as long as possible so they will keep that homepage peppered with misinformation just to make a dollar.

Watching on desktop with Adblock makes it tolerable (for now), but via phone/tablet it’s a real pain.

So I tend to avoid YT in my downtime.

I just use Firefox on mobile with uBlock. I hated that Vanced always had that icon up top in the bar.

Here is one way you can block YouTube ads on IOS but it takes multiple clicks each time you watch a video. It’s not worth doing for very short videos.

First, Download AdGuard from App Store

Then, each time you want to watch a video without ads:

        1. Start watching a video in YouTube
        2. When the video starts, pause the video, click the share button, then click more…, then select “Block YouTube ads by AdGuard”
        3. The AdGuard app runs the video without ads. Seems to work fine but sometimes will blink and stutter as it is skipping an ad.

I assume there are other similar IOS apps besides AdGuard that do the same.

NewPipe. Trivial to install. AdGuard is an option, too. But yeah, it kinda sucks anyway.

I guess I have the benefit of hating to use phones at the best of times (tiny screens and touch interfaces are useless for almost everything imo), so watching on desktop is preferable in any case....

But maybe that's actually a curse more than a benefit, since Youtube being perfectly usable in my preferred setting means I waste much more of my time there.

Pretty sure they just didn't look for very long. Pay me to work for a day and I'll probably find a hundred. And there are reports with 200+ videos.

“Various kinds of disinfo” isn’t against YouTube ToS. Keep in mind they’re trying to balance free discourse against censorship of blatant disinformation.

False, 2. It includes climate disinfo, 3. Youtube pledged to not promote climate change denial at all, not "balance" it.

It's one way or the other, a platform like YouTube gotta pay those big server bills.

One way is the direct monetization by asking your users to buy premium subscriptions where you don't get to see ads plus few other features.

The other way is to show you ads, political propaganda and other things like this one while keeping the content free.

If you only keep the first option, your revenues might be good but usage will fall drastically as most internet users happen to be freeloader peasants!

With the second option, you can monetize the crowd through ads, etc. but your platform might get a bad rep due to these things. But since the freeloaders are already addicted, they will still keep coming to you as long as they have no better options. And since these freeloaders are also crowd or popularity drivers, even growth/revenue wise this is a better option.

Depending on your revenue and growth targets, you might choose one of these monetization options. YouTube is that rare platform which combines both these models, it has both a premium subscription and the ad ridden version for freeloaders (which they often bypass through blockers and Google is fighting that by trying to bring new DRM standards in browsers).

It’s the bills that are one of the big reasons why I so strongly disagree that media companies should be enforcing free speech absolutism. If money is speech, then that means that even if there is no ads on these videos, YouTube and Google are subsidizing this kind of speech. Ads just make it worse because it means they are investing in them and making money off of it.

If you are a company that provides a platform for fascists and crackpots, you are evil. It is as simple as that.

Ok but you do see how I'd they started taking that content off, now people say "oh big tech is being partisan and now we're going to regulate them for that". There's no way for the companies to please everyone. The left wants to regulate them for not taking stuff down, the right wants to regulate them because they take too much down. Vote with your money and if you don't like it, stop going there. But all of these headlines are further clickbait to steer the discourse away from anything productive.

Great! Let them try to regulate them! All they need to do is to come up with some consensus about what is and what is not acceptable to say in public. I'm sure that'll work out great for everyone...

I'm not being facetious or sarcastic. Really, anything is better than allowing fascism to continue to grow.
