Turning my Framework laptop into a tiny desktop was fun. Now it needs a job.

Framework is absolutely on my short list but, sadly, true to the company's mission, it's cheaper to fix up my Dell's battery than to buy a whole new system so I did that.

That said, I would run into the same problem when upgrading - I've got three computers, two laptops, and a tablet all sitting in my living room. If the framework replaced my XPS13 and I upgraded I would have another one sitting around! It could go on a bedroom TV but that means buying another K400 and that's hardly compact...

But I guess it also dawned on me that I could probably find a mobo for one on eBay, I wonder if they sell a bare chassis... It's probably cheaper just to get the laptop new.

Is there a specific phrase I should search for to try to find someone local for refurbishing batteries? I know I can try to source things online but it would be real handy to find someone local.

Well, for individual batteries like laptops, I'm more talking about buying a new battery and recycling the old one. I don't know where to procure individual cells and I'm not one to recommend cutting open your battery to find out the cell size but if you knew that you could probably just order them and solder them in.

But, lacking that, it's safer to just replace and recycle.

That said, I have considered making an 'external' battery for one of my older laptops so it would just be powered by a slab of more standard size Li-ion cells (like, some 18650s) that I could just disconnect when I'm finished using so they're not reliant on proprietary batteries anymore.

Yeah I think Framework is the coolest laptop that I have no use for. Working from home there's really no justification for not just using my Desktop. Especially since I can use the SteamDeck for playing on the couch for variety.

If/when I have to commute/travel for work again will definitely be thinking about it.

I thought this was a cool read, and another interesting reason to consider a Framework laptop for my next device.

Agreed, excellent read! With all the hoopla on Framework, i'll be honest i had not thought of the "slabtop"/desktop angle...which is amazing - both for using "leftover parts" but also because i can imagine many technologists who want to keep upgrading don't lose out on their legacy hardware. In other words, the Framework company can still make reasonablr money on an upgrade path that is not only about their laptops, but can also foster desktop paths (hence their coolmaster partnership, etc.). Its like the best of all worlds; kudos to Framework folks!

I mean, I basically collect every old bit of hardware I can get my hands on. Being able to just throw a free laptop at someone who needs one at the drop of a hat is a very useful thing.

I've also been trying to minimize my electrical footprint, and it's real hard to beat the cost/benefit of a medium-old laptop with an external USB SATA enclosure. The setup I have now sits at about 50W, with 3 8 TB hard drives. It's probably not as good as a newer desktop system, because the SATA power management is probably better, but this also is incredibly portable and with an ansible script, becomes trivial to move the drives between different systems, including my linux workstations.

I'm really hoping Framework becomes an industry-wide standard, because it would be amazing for keeping computers out of landfills. Most of my server needs would be handled amazingly well with a SoC with 6 SATA ports, but finding those at a reasonable price point has thus far turned up nothing.

Exactly this! Especially for users on the other side of the digital divide, any laptop is better than no laptop, etc. Same here. I recently donated my old power hungry PC tower, and replaced it...

Same here. I recently donated my old power hungry PC tower, and replaced it with a less-power-using small form factor machine...and have gotten rid of other machines as well (donated those too)...and if/when i do have any future needs, i will dip into an old laptop instead of getting something new...which as you noted can be great for laptop use-case to fill.

I'm really hoping Framework becomes an industry-wide standard, because it would be amazing for keeping computers out of landfills.

As much of a fan that i am of Framework, i welcome competition...so the industry-wide standard that you noted is something that i really, really hope becomes more of the norm, and i hope there becomes a growing ecosystem...which benefits not only consumers but also earth...Plus, with linux distrobutions that can perk up older machines, also helps folks who lack access to technology. What Frasmework is doing, and if others do the same/similar, would be a win-win-win for all involved; at least i think so.

Standards almost always start by others replicating another companies internal solution to a new problem. With framework being the first of its kind and publishing alnost everything needed for other companies to make thier own mods, its not unlikely that when a competitor to framework shows up, they use frameworkds interface standards, and it becomes a de-facto standards. One something is a de-facto standard used ib a couple of places, then formal standardizatuon is on the table. Most standards, or at least their V1, are descriptive, not prescrptive.

Agreed; and, hell, a de facto standard is better than no standard! :-)

Framework will be my next laptop. The only thing is that my current computer works just fine; while I'd love to support Framework as a company, it will have to wait another year or two.
